Living on a Chaos world is very similar to just being some back-water single planet (or perhaps just a few planets) race which is extraordinarily far from a power player.

Life could be a horrible grind, constant pain, or extremely enjoyable and simple; it's just a mixed bag. Yet whatever life you live, if something bigger notices you and doesn't like you then you're gone.

I mean if you are at least with Nurgle, you won't die but you would be a zombie and not really have anything to call yours. Khorne is constant fighting or arena games. Slaanesh...okay...maybe but still there is pain that comes with that pleasure plus Emperor's Children have ruined any kind of good tidings towards Slaanesh and Tzeentch...wouldn't mind that if I was a psyker but you would probably blow yourself up.

I really feel that "Hey, it looks bad right now but you know what, after you drink the kool aid, everything is great" is not really a strong argument. If it looks fething nuts chances are its fething nuts and drinking the kool aid doesn't change that.

It's unclear that the Tau would maintain a military threat for internal purposes. The Fire Caste was kept up, trained, and maintained for a long period only because the Ethereals believed that they would need them once they moved off the surface of T'au.

Otherwise the Firecaste was not used between the period of the Ethereals arriving and the Tau moving off planet.

The Tau are sort of the 40k version of the Roman Empire in some regards. You are perfectly fine worshiping whoever and whatever you want, can live your life as you please as a conquered people, as long as you accept the Greater Good (Emperor) as the head of everything. The Romans were not particularly nice people, but in comparison it was far better to be inside the Empire than outside it.

I think most responders have come to see"douchey" as racism and are responding accordingly.

IMO, for douchey levels:

Imperium: to preserve its empire, the Imperium either turns 'ordinary' humans into part man part machine part steroid-infused super human giant, and then makes them fight in the most brutal situations. If one doesnt satisfy the needs of these superhumans during the trials to become one, they became fused into a machine as cyborg helpers that may be lucky enough to have tracks instead of feat, or get placed in a wall to help a superhuman put his armour in. For it's other armies, the Imperium drafts billions of men and woman into it's huge armies, and then kills billions of them to keep some planets, sometimes all for naught.

Eldar: Their arrogance was their downfall, but do they change their attitude? Their sense of self-preservation is douchey in the extreme, as theyd rather whole planets die in place of them. Dont even get me started on Wave Serpents Spam.

Dark Eldar: Conniving, Brutal, Bloodthirsty, Derpraved and Torture-loving/ surviving. These guys live on the pain of others, so they steal them and kill them slowly so they can absorb more pain before moving on to the next one. Need I say more?

Orks: These guys dont kill for more land. These guys dont kill to protect their families, for money (sort of (teef)) or for political gain. They kill because they can. They kill because they like it. They like inflicting pain and suffering because theyre big tough and dumb. This is the typical description of a bully. And do you know what we call bullies? Hint: Douches.

Necrons: Okay. Well these guys aren't too bad. They kill because they want to reinstate their ancient empire. But I think the killer aspect of the Necrons is the Biotransference. The highest member of the hierarchy, the Silent King, who would get the best 'upgrades' and retain his personality, forced the lowest people, the plebes and such, to sell their souls and effectively die to create mechanical monstrosities. These guys were the OD (Original Douchebags).

Tyranids: Eat everything. Which is douchey in itself, but they're basically animals so its hard to be specifically douchey. Just douchey by nature of killing because they're told to.

Tau: They subsume all those who allow them. Kill those who don't. They are always right. When they're not right, they're right. Riptides. Douchey. But not the most douchey.

Chaos: They are the Corrupting. The Depraved. The Violent. The Pestilent. Those who seek so much to gain power that theyve fought an impossible war with each other for millenia upon end. When they can't do it themselves, theyll ruin the lives of others for them to do it. Just as Planned.

Tau fluff is almost all "maybes" and "perhapses" so it is up to each player to determine how bright or dark they really are. A lot of hints at a malevolent undertone, but nothing is confirmed. So a view that the Tau Empire is basically the Federation in 40k or the Imperium 2.0 can't really be said to be totally wrong.

Personally, I like the tau because I see them as a deep shade of grey (perhaps a bit dark grey, but still). I think they legitimately believe what they are doing is improving the lives of everyone since the Greater Good saved their own race from self-destruction and began their century long Golden Age, but they cannot fathom why anyone would reject their offer. For non-tau races in the empire, I see it basically like living in a golden cage.

Orks aside though, if I'm being honest, every race in 40k are douch bags in their own right, ultimately, they want to pursue their own goals above any others, but theyre all at war, and thats just how the far future works. If youve come to 40k looking for a race that you can consider 'nice guys' then youre barking up the wrong tree.

Every race, save perhaps Tyranids and to a lesser extent Tau, have two things in common:

They will fight anything; even themselves. Tyranids and Tau are both fairly exempt from this, but not entirely (Farsight Enclaves, Hive Fleets competing to consume a world).

They will not allow anyone out-of-race force to rule them unless subjected to literal slavery or some form of mind control. Ergo citizens of all types working for the Dark Eldar as slaves, Tyranids being controlled (to some extent) via experimentation.

All races have this in common, so to say that Orks aren't special because of that is true. However this is a fairly flat argument, because what really matters is the feelings which accompany this act as well as the reasoning.

For example, whilst the Imperium will kill anything (even other humans), they also hate everything which they kill. All Xenos must due because they are filthy xenos which do not deserve to live. All heretics must burn because they are malicious and vile heathens who seek only to corrupt mankind's purity and lead them astray. They hate everything which they kill, they do it for "bad" reasons if you will.

Similarly, look at Orks. Orks fight not because of hatred or racial enmity, but just for the joy of it. As far as they're concerned fighting is the only reason to live, and they fail to grasp that other races do not share this sentiment. An Ork will never be genuinely upset that a fight was brought to them, and by the same token they do not bring fights to other races because they hate them or harbor any ethnic cleansing policies. They don't grasp that others don't want to fight them, the concept is utterly alien to them.

For another side of the coin, Dark Eldar fight everyone entirely for personal gain. They want to get their rocks off by torturing and climb the social ladder, that's the reason they fight and kill. Tau fight to subvert everything under their control Necrons fight because they want to purge all life and view the other races as pitiful squatters. Chaos fights because it wants to corrupt and bring about an existence of eternal agony, damnation, and mayhem. Tyranids fight because they're hungry and want to survive.

While it's true that everyone fights everyone, there are very different tones. The whole "Orks don't hate, they love" thing really is true. They love that the other races exist and wouldn't have it any other way; it gives them something to fight. They love it when the other races bring them a fight, because it's jolly good fun even if they die. Compare this to the "Everything is inferior and all other races must be erased" reasoning of the Imperium, or the thirst for pain which drives the Dark Eldar. While no one in 40k is by any means a good guy, Orks are one of the only races which lacks an actual streak of evil, no such thing is even hinted at. They fight and wage war because they love it and don't understand any other way of life, not because they have some alternate motives.

I am pretty sure saying “I do not want to fight you” to an ork will not change anything. Even if you manage to convince it. It will just convince it to enslave you. Because that is what orks do with people that would not fight.

Same with Orks as with Tyranids! Orks are equal opportunity ass kickers! They even kill themselves!

Personally, I like the tau because I see them as a deep shade of grey (perhaps a bit dark grey, but still). I think they legitimately believe what they are doing is improving the lives of everyone since the Greater Good saved their own race from self-destruction and began their century long Golden Age, but they cannot fathom why anyone would reject their offer. For non-tau races in the empire, I see it basically like living in a golden cage.

A golden cage with very widely spaced bars. Allied races are still allowed to do much of what they want. The Kroot, for example, still eat fallen prey. The Tau do not approve, but also do not stop it or treat the kroot poorly because of it. Ex Imperials are still allowed to worship the Emporer if they so choose. Travel is not restricted beyond dangerous zones or to Farsight's domain. Trade is largely open and free.

If it does not directly imperil the Greater Good (obidience to the Emporer), you are largely still your own man/woman. So retrictions, yes, but far less than any other race.

Of all the races out there, only Papa Nurgle loves all.

Papa nurgle doesn't love you, he loves his idea of you, and he's going to make you scream in delirious agony and suffer in suicidal misery (while being unable to actually die), in order to force you to fit that image.
