Hey everyone. I thought I'd try my hand at making a blog about my latest project. My Dakka gallery with the pictures featured below can be found here: Apis, The Spine of God

I'm a huge Monster Magnet fan. One thing I've always wanted to do is create something Bullgod inspired. I'll leave it to you, dear reader, to look at the symbology of the Bullgod and interpretations throughout history. I finally hit the piece of inspiration and gathered the pieces I needed to make it happen.

If anyone else is a fan, they've probably seen the cover art for their latest album, Last Patrol:
Spoiler:

This was my starting point for inspiration, as I am a fan of the space motif for the Bullgod here. So how does this translate? I had a few goals:
- Recycle an old model
- Challenge my sculpting skills
- Step up my airbrush game
- Build something I'll use on the table
- Find an excuse to blare music while I paint

So let's get started. Expand the spoiler for my step by step and color commentary.
Here are some images of the final product! Thanks for the feedback I've gotten so far and please feel free to leave some more as I head off to my next project.

Spoiler:

First let's prepare our workspace...

Ugh that's a mess. That's no good. Time to clean up!

Perfect!

In the interest of recycling an old model, I chose one of the first models I ever painted, this trusty old defiler. Oooh boy, that thing looks terrible, and is in need of some repair work.

So, what can I do with this guy? Obvious answer is "Let's make a Soul Grinder!". Obviously, I'll need to give this thing a box-ectomy? .. a .. cannon tuck? a... umm... screw it. Let's cut. Time to bust out the trusty Gee Dub saw and get cracking. You can see I took the easiest route possible to avoid damaging the legs, which is to slice the thing off at the "waist" which is a statically glued joint.

Perfect! This leaves me with usable legs for my soul grinder. We won't be needing the excess

Whoa hold on...

That gun is totally reusable. Score! All we have to do before we can start building is to strip paint. Time to break out the Old Bay

Oh who am I kidding, time to break out all the SImple Green... all of it.

Some of the joints popped, and I used this opportunity to place pieces in an ultrasonic cleaner with some Simple Green and water to further loosen things up between soaks and scrubbing.

Here's what I had left and how they reassembled. There are still some spots with a bit of paint and primer, which I scraped off offending paint with a hobby knife as I proceeded to build over the next few days. As a bonus, I was able to reclaim a pair of 1/4" disk magnets!

During this process, I needed to learn some airbrushing techniques. Being the pro I am, I spent minutes Googling and found some decent tutorial videos on how to airbrush nebulae. After some planning, I picked up some paints and set up some materials to do a few practice runs. Using some cardboard reclaimed from the Amazon, I made a simple cardboard canvas, which I primed black. I then cut out a clear piece of flexible plastic with randomly cut edges to form a simple stencil. Perfect! I made two attempts. The first was... alright. The second much better.

My canvas!

My Stencil!

My first attempt!

And the second attempt! I'm confident enough at this point to move on.

So, I've got a sweet chassis at this point, what am I going to do to beef up this model? ... to take this project by the horns? ...Moo moo. Moo!
How about kitbashing one of these slick Ghorgon kits? Shazam!

Uhh. I've never built one of these before. It looks cool, but how does this work?

Oh screw it

Thanks for the photobomb, Fire Marshal Bento.

So I started building. The kit, I have to say, has some really great bits to use for this and some others which will be great for future projects. The torso went together smoothly and I chose a head and horn combination from a number of options.. The body looks super creepy with the tongue. The head will slip on afterwards over this, thankfully. I even gave the chassis a tail, which we'll revisit later. Dry positioning the torso shows I have achieved what I wanted. I used paper clips to create a three point brace to lower the torso on for stability. I added four arms to this beast, saving the optional shoulder caps for later, and reused the previously saved cannon to act as my Harvester Cannon.

Again, the torso is dry fit at this point. And planning for the next steps, I need a bit more plastic to work with to really integrate the two models. I can hide a lot of this, but some scultpting will be exposed. This is the point at which I added and then removed legs to the might Mechataur within minutes. How cruel...

For the sculpting, I opted to use Milliput for this project. To connect torso to chassis, I used a fairly large piece sculpted to the bottom of the torso pressed down over the bracing pins, piercing the Milliput along with a few spot welds of super glue and plastic cement. Afterwards I scultped a spine ridge down the chassis to join with the tail to give it a more organic look.

Now at this point, I of course let the initial work cure before continuing. Next step, this guy needs some flair... and an ass. I picked out some random bits from the Ghorgon kit (hook hands, skeleton, loin cloth, and the shoulders), some pipes from a Dakkajet kit and some tusks from a Battlewagon kit, and some bass guitar string to use as ribbed tubing. The ass I sculpted out of the shoulder caps (I 'member the long long ago) and more Milliput. I combined the hook hands and pipes to form .. something.. for the sides. I think they look like these are part of the anchor used to bind the daemon as well as sweet exhaust taht any self respecting bullgod needs. The loin cloth and tusks were added to the front for flair. Added a cool skeleton, and inserted some paper clip pins and cut guitar string to integrate flesh and machine. Finally, I did some repair work with green stuff and liquid green stuff to smooth out some gaps and mold lines.

Hey and look! We now have a Soul Grinder! I've added another half finished Soul Grinder for size comparison. Close enough for gubmint work.

And then I primed. For this, I used Badger's Stynylrez black primer for the first time. I have to say I really like it and plan on using this in the future, as it layered on smoothly.

So now it's time to start the airbrushing. Remember that practice I did earlier? I want to do that effect over the flat panels on the legs. Each panel, and the backs of the hook hands and the cannon panel, got a bit of stencil work. I layered two colors (VMA Blue and Minitaire Green) over VMA white. The star pattern was done with a toothbrush and toothpick splatter with a bit of Createx Opaque white. I coated with Testor's gloss coat from a rattle can to protect the paint.

Next, I fashioned booties (adorable, I might add!) out of plastic bags and masking tape to begin airbrushing the body. I used progressive coats starting with VMA Olive Drab and mixing it down with VMA White and VMA Gold Yellow to airbrush the skin and hair and horns. Different areas and parts were layered in different amounts and angles to differentiate between them. I finished up with another coat of Testor's Gloss.

Booties off! Sexy!

Now for the most tedious thing I have to do: paint the chassis. This was done with traditional brushing (as all further painting will be) using VMA Aluminum.

And on to layering, washing and drybrushing. I won't get as detailed here, but I will show you the work as I progress. You may have noticed things coming out of the back of the cannon. I have since removed these as I could not get them to glue properly and they kept breaking. Unfortunate, but not needed. I should also add that I attempted heat stress washing for the first time using this tutorial. It came out... acceptable. I am using a random assortment of Citadel and Vallejo paints and washes for this project. The aluminum in the previous steps is slowly being washed black, accented with Runelord Brass and drybrushed with Necron Compound to tone down the brightness. Skulls was layered with Karak Stone, washed with Seraphim Sepia and drybrushed with Praxetti White. Body hair is being washed with Seraphim Sepia... he uh... has a happy trail. So weird to paint...

When I was first scrolling through, I thought the saw was a butcher knife. Was worried how the rest of it was going to turn out.
Super impressed though! Airbrush work turned out top notch for having just used some google-fu to learn the skill.

What is next? Going to make a beastmen chaos proxy army to back this guy up?

Thanks for the feedback!

I've been airbrushing, for about a year and a half now and while it's gone well, I've been trying to expand what I can do. I've been having a much easier time picking up this skill rather than traditional brush painting. Glad to hear it looks good to others as well

Next? I'm not entirely sure, but I want to revisit some old models I've had sitting around, including some much less drastic conversions, but would apply the sculpting and airbrushing techniques I've used on this model. Likely I will expand my Slaanesh forces a bit with some more musically inspired models. I've had the plan and parts for a while to build a sound system for a land raider. I've also been wanting to really desecrate a Vendetta for a while, and may switch away from my original idea now that I've done this. From this kit, I'd really like to use some of the leftover Ghorgon/Cygor pieces to do another Daemon Prince. I've got two Predators that have been sitting dejected for a while which may be a next project. And there are a few other WHFB kits I've been eyeing for 40k conversion (Hellpit Abomination would make for a cool counts as GUO or Wildwood Rangers as cultists).

I've had a great time so far as I've been blasting music the entire time I paint to inspire myself, so there may be some more themed builds like this coming. For now I'n slowly applying paint to this guy and more things are coming together. We'll see!

Monster Magnet are the best band in the world, I've thought of a bullgod/keeper of secrets conversion before, but this certainly works too. I think the skin needs more texture to stop it from looking so airbrushed - not that there is anything wrong with airbrushing, it's just I think it will all look better with some nice grungy detail.

I absolutely agree with you Bruticus. There are veins and textures I want to pop out and I'm still trying to map out a plan of attack for them. Also thinking to go with a matte clear coat for the torso when complete. The gloss coat on it is mostly to protect my work so far, and the chassis will be gloss coated again when fully done. That means he'll need a pretty skirt for a day, to go with his cute booties.

And I've added finished pictures to the top of the thread.

I'm really ecstatic with how he turned out. This is the most ambitious project I've done to date. Please vote and leave feedback on this and the rest of my gallery.

I adapted and scaled down the techniques in this video. The metallic paint was applied to the chassis after the airbrushing.

The "depths of space" design on the Daemon Prince wings is a really neat effect, especially paired with the metal emotionless mask. Vendetta also looks great, especially the Chaos icon on the wing.

You've got some great stuff. Looking forward to more!

This is awesome, and the models look great! I love Monster Magnet, and I have been a fan since Powertrip. Last Patrol is a killer album, and I can see why you'd be inspired by their music. My friend made a play list inspired by the HH novel Fulgrim and used A Thousand Stars from 4-Way Diablo which I thought was very cool.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Hopefully I'll have some more pictures soon on stuff I've been working on.

I came aboard around Powertrip and went backwards and forwards from there. They usually find their way into my gaming playlists as well and I listen to a lot of Magnet while painting.

Recently It's been Powerman 5000 for painting to the last week or so. Mix in a bit of Clutch and Fear Factory for flavor.

Cool, I've gone backwards from Powertrip too as well as forwards obviously. I haven't listened to Powerman 5000 in years, although I still dig Clutch. Sounds like we grew up about the same time, as we have similar musical tastes.

Look forward to seeing more updates!

I guess I should post these as I'm making this into a general P&M thread for myself. I finished up a unit of Alpha Legion CSM and a Herald of Tzeentch on a disc.

The marines had been base coated for 2 years but I managed to match close enough. 6 of the 17 models in this picture were painted 2 years ago, try and find em. The icon is removable and I have four god specific icons assembled waiting on paint.

I also had this Herald in a half finished state, as well as three additional Heralds in a weird wash-coloring state, ready for detailing. I will add them when I get to them. Check the gallery, as he's magnetized for transport and to switch to a normal base if the need ever arises.

Next up, I am working on completing my Nurgle Soul Grinder, which I've had and used quite a bit but has been sitting in a half-base coated state for over a year. I managed to lay quite a bit of hand brushing down on the chassis, but I know this model takes some time. I'm also slowly greenstuffing a Glottkin kit. I've already put pins into Ghurk and some bases to allow me to use Otto and Ethrac as stand ins for other models or to sit on Ghurk. I don't play WFB, so this project is a bit more of a for-fun project. There are plenty of seams to fill on Ghurk, so it may be a bit before he gets primed.

If you can't tell, I'm on a mission. I put together a display case for my home this year, and only half of the space contains fully painted models of various skill levels over the past few years. More than half of that I'm certain was in the last year. The other shelves are holding stuff "to-do" and I've been picking out pieces that strike me, whether it's a full paint job or finishing up something that I've partially painted. Feels good just knocking these out.

Finished this quicker than I thought I would.

This Soul Grinder of Nurgle has been half painted for a year and a half. Decided to knock it out.

Not sure what's next, as I'm winding down on my Daemons (3 half painted heralds), but have plenty of CSM to do.

Doing the three Glottkin as separate pieces (with the ability to combine again if I want). Finished up Otto. I figure I can use him as a Chaos Lord or Herald of Nurgle if I want to.

Did a self imposed speed challenge and took these plaguebearers from bare plastic to full paint and basing in ~5 man hours. I was really happy with how these turned out in general and with my ability to get them done quickly. Enjoy.

Decided to paint up another buddy for those plaguebearers and knocked out Ethrac from the Glottkin kit. The last pic is still WIP as Ghurk remains to be completed. Otto and Ethrac are both pinned to be used individually (lords, heralds, sorcerers, what have you) and on top of Ghurk as "artillery".

Thanks for the feedback, slamma!

He's roughly the same volume as an Imperial Knight, except a little skinnier in the shoulders and Otto, Ethrac and Ghurk's bones extend even higher. The plan is to use him as a counts-as Knight and definitely waiting to see if FW release Chaos Knight rules after seeing event pics. The base he's on is the same size base as an Imperial Knight. Otto's base and Ethrac's base are standard 28mm round bases.

Painting Ghurk feels like painting a basketball covered in belts and sores. I've been tooling with him off and on since I laid down the airbrush work. Hopefully will get him done sooner than later as I have a bloodthirster primed and ready :3

that's a good use for him. could also be used as scabby maybe? probs too big for a GUO, unless they release a big plastic one of those at some point

He's likely to scale for Scabiethrax. Much larger than the current resin GUO, as that racquetball plops neatly on a 60mm round base. Hoping for a new GUO and KOS after Tzeentch Daemonkin. I'm kind of curious if they reuse the Glottkin kit for this. Looking forward to whatever is released for the new LOC as well. Big daemons are fun.
