I don't live in a border area, but I do have a locked box in my car. If I were to cross into a state where I don't know 100% what the law is I would pull over on the side of the road, take off my gun, lock it up, and be on my way.

I wouldn't just assume like the lady in the OP.

And had you done that in NJ like the lady in the OP you too would likely be charged with the same offence

"Handguns. Any person who knowingly has in his possession any handgun, including any antique handgun, without first having obtained a permit to carry the same as provided in N.J.S.2C:58-4, is guilty of a crime of the third degree if the handgun is in the nature of an air gun, spring gun or pistol or other weapon of a similar nature in which the propelling force is a spring, elastic band, carbon dioxide, compressed or other gas or vapor, air or compressed air, or is ignited by compressed air, and ejecting a bullet or missile smaller than three-eighths of an inch in diameter, with sufficient force to injure a person. Otherwise it is a crime of the second degree."

If I were to stay in New Jersey, I would make sure I know about the laws in New Jersey and follow them.

If however I just happen to cross into New Jersey during my travels, because really who wants to stay there on purpose, I would be covered by federal law and this section would not apply to me thanks to 18 U.S. Code ยง 926A

You omitted to mention that you'd have cleared the firearm and that it would be unloaded in your original post. Good recovery though

I assumed that I was talking to responsible gun owners and that you guys would understand that any stored firearm would be cleared and unloaded before being placed in storage

Not a gun owner (yet - my wife thinks that a fella from Northern Ireland moving to the US and buying a gun looks suspicious ), but I am responsible when handling them. Besides, you managed to outline everything else except clearing the weapon I thought it was an omission
