Alright so I took a bit of a break after finishing the Talos and now I'm back to it with some more Wyches built. This will make up my second troop choice so I can run my army as a CAD. But I then got distracted by a new model that showed up in the mail after what I believe was a two year wait (not entirely sure but it has been a long wait). Anyways this is the Creature Caster spider demon. Despite having to wait a really long time to get it I'm super happy with the sculpt and I'm both excited and intimidated to paint it in equal measure. Not sure when I'll get around to it but I just couldn't wait to put it together with some blue-tac to see what it'll look like.

That looks great! If only they had rules for a Wraithknight sized Keeper of Secrets it would fit very nicely

She’s a giant deamon-bug thing. Any ideas on how to get her to the table? If she is WK sized, could you field her as one? If not, should be a fun painting project.

Painting troops to fill out armies might not be the most entertaining thing (we’d rather be painting the sparkly cool stuff) but it's one of the things we need to do to play the game. Those wyches at least look like a fun batch of crazies.

The big gribbly lassie is cool as feth but a two year wait????! How is that company still in business?!!!!!! Wyches are cool but paint more Helions!!! They're my favourite of your army to date

@Ynneadwraith: Yeah it's a bit disappointing that she fits in an awkward scale for 40K. She's smaller than a WK but bigger than a wraithlord. Rule of cool I think wins out here for me.

@Nevelon: Before getting into Eldar I was a chaos player. I originally ordered this model and 10 mantis warriors from Raging Heroes to act as a keeper of secrets and daemonettes to run as an allied detachment. Well I finally got sick of the poor treatment Chaos was receiving from GW (not just rules-wise but seriously the fluff has been so watered down and lame compare to ten years ago) that I went to Eldar. The mantis warriors have sat primed and unfinished since and this model has shown up so late to the party that it's almost laughable. Currently it'll probably only be a painting/display piece but I may run an allied detachment of a keeper of secrets and a unit of daemonettes for my Eldar for some fluff games (I see the slaanesh daemons as an extension to the Eldar line since the models fit the theme, thin, fast, glass cannons. After all there would be no slaanesh without Eldar).

I don't mind painting troops too much. They can get a bit tedious but since you have to paint so many of them they make for really good practice. Especially the Wych models, they are so beautifully detailed and have lots of stuff going on I get to practice skin, metals, cloth, hair, faces and edge highlighting.

@Januine: Yeah it was a company called Creature Caster that I backed on Kickstarter. Kickstarter campaigns unfortunately run the risk of going overdue but that's life I suppose. I'm glad you really dig my Hellions Jan, I think style may be all they got going for them since their rules are... lackluster. I do plan on adding more though, it was actually a toos-up between buying another box of hellions, some scourges or a razorwing jetfighter for my next fast attack slot. I may have narrowed down my choices now

Inevitable_Faith,

Cannot wait to see the Wyches get painted, if they are anything like the rest of your Dark Eldar they will be grand.

Alright not too much of a painting update but I'm pretty excited as I got to play my first match with my DE force last night. I used everything I have painted thus far so it wasn't by any means a competitive force but I was able to make a CAD by cutting my ten wyches into two smaller 5-wych units. One was in a raider and the other posted in using the webway portal given to my succubus.

Did 2000 points Astra Millitarum against 700 points of my DE and 1300 points of my friends Deathwatch combined. Overall we had a great time with heavy losses on both sides and the final objectives being 11-15 in favour of our opponents guardsmen. My MVP of the match was definitely my raider which was able to use it's shock prow to ram a wyvern and cause it to wreck. Our opponent had an insane amount of ignores cover weaponry so I found it quite difficult for my infantry to survive much. Also learned that Pasks punisher cannon tears Talos apart without much difficulty.

It was also a good night because it was the first time we've been able to play at my place with my newly re-floored basement (I finally got my carpet ripped up and spent the past three weeks after work installing new laminate across the whole basement). Anyways now that the floor is installed and I'm just down to some of the simpler touch up work to finish down there hopefully I'll have more time to paint than I have had in the past month or so.

Seems like a very fun game!

Congrats on the wyvern wreck, I have never survived (as wolves or DE) to make it to them, as they generally tear my force apart no problem.

Yeah Wyverns are always a thorn in my side in every match. They just dump out such a ridiculous amount of wounds and you can't hide from them at all. In this case I went for a risky raider deep strike in behind his lines and rolled a lucky direct hit for scatter. I jinked the raider to avoid his inevitable attempt to destroy my raider using his tanks then on the next round I rammed the raider in. I did get a ram in on the next round against his Pask punisher but I failed to penetrate his tanks armor.

been a while since my last update. Heavy workload, non-stop political and trying to finish my house renovations have gotten me in a painting slump. Tried to get in the swing of things tonight with a small bit of progress. Last night I did manage to get my second game in with my DE. We won this one (mostly thanks to my buddy's necron forces) and had lots of fun to boot.

The battle was eternal war, mission 5, 700 points of DE allied with my friends 1300 points of necron vs 2000 points deathwatch/mechanicus/imperial knight. MVP for this match for me was (surprisingly) a tie between my 5-man hellion unit and my 5-man wych squad. Rolled +1 initiative for combat drugs (totally useless on wyches who are already I6, who at GW thought that was a good drug?) but despite that managed to have my wyches take out a 3-man units of kataphron breachers on the charge (got the last one with a sweeping advance) and my hellions took out a missile launcher DW squad from DS (shot 3 dead, they failed morale and ran off the board) it was a really solid turn two and essentially started the snowball that would become our victory. Fun match all around, with great company.

As for the painting: I put the last bit of glue on my Wyches to keep their basing down prior to priming, they will get primed tomorrow. I took the time then to do some base colours on my Kabalites. Just some black and silver so far. I'm not 100% sold on how I want to paint these guys up just yet, whether I want to try and follow my Wych paintjobs or change it up a bit. I'm open to suggestions.

Hah MVP to Hellions and Wyches. Who'd have thought it?

My vote for the kabalites is stick with the same theme. With less exposed skin they'll look darker overall which should make them look different enough

I’ll agree with this. The lack of skin should make them significantly different, even with the same palette.

You could also mix up what colors go where. You are basically working in black/pink/teal. By changing what parts go where, you can keep a unit looking cohesive with the army, but completely separate from their peers. You might want to keep extreme swaps (like doing the armor teal, rather then black) for elite units like trueborn or incubi. Just to make them stand out more. Rank and File guys should probably stick with the core pattern. But you could swap helmet colors around.

Always good to get games in. Sounds like a fun one!

Thanks for the votes guys! This'll help me get the scheme down, especially for the Kabalites. I like your idea Nev about colour swapping around a bit, I'll definitely have to experiment with that.

I was very happy to get these two games in, my first two games in a very long time. Both were lots of fun.

Alright wyches are primed and will be ready for paint tomorrow! I'm actually getting stoked to paint some more wyches up again. In other news I wanted to try out a couple different methods of painting my DE and figured one of my Kabalites would be a good test model. Not everything I tried was successful but it was a learning experience. Having said that I think I found a way of painting the armor plates that I quite like. It gives me a pretty nice transition of colours that I find quite pleasing to the eye and I'm really hoping the photos will pick up on that. I only painted up half his body this way to try it out (I have commitment issues) but I think tomorrow I may finish him completely to see what the whole effect looks like. Please let me know what you guys think of this and if, in your opinion, it would look good done across the whole model/unit.

Cool. I like the pinky plates, give the impression of exposed muscle.

Would a contrasting highlight work on the purple metallic plates, just to make them pop a bit? Not sure what colour would be best though? I want to say a neon green, but I think that's mostly because I'm painting up some Alpha Legion at the moment.

Looks good. You might want to set him next to some other parts of your army and see how he fits in. But I suspect he will do just fine.

Thanks for the comments everyone, I'll definitely be finishing this guy up and then comparing him with the rest of the force to see if this is how I want to move forward.

@EDC: I see what you mean about doing a contrasting colour for the metallic. I'll definitely have to experiment with some options. As it stands the metallic is just copying the metallic plates on my wyches. Consulting the colour wheel gods my good choices for complimentary colours would be either green or a type of sky blue. I'm reluctant to add a new colour to the mix with sky blue so I think I'll experiment with the green for now. Also don't worry about being biased due to your current project. Secretly this Kabalite is Alpharius, he told me so.

I love it!

the pink transition seems a lot different than the wyches but in the best way possible.

I have always considered separating the wyches/haemonculous covens/kabalite in different/similar schemes but I haven't really done anything about it (besides theory crafting about the talos I have sitting on my desk!)

All in all, the pink looks very good, I never thought I'd be such a fan of pink DE, but it just works.

Keep it up!

Ok I "almost" finished my first Kabalite tonight. I gotta say the more I look at him the more I'm liking the way I did the armor plates for this one. So much so that I'm seriously considering swapping the way I did my Wych armor plates. I'll definitely be doing a test model with my new Wyches to see how it looks. So here's the progress thus far, let me know what you think.

Thank you very much for your awesome comments guys, I appreciate them. I hear ya by the way Gummyofallbears, who'd have thought a bright pink DE army could work. I'm glad I can take a seldom seen colour and use it to good effect for my force without making it look like a joke... or maybe it is a joke and I'm too dull to get it.

Anyways... Pictures!

Looking really cool much easier to see what they'll look like from a fully painted model. Will definitely work very well alongside your Wyches

Jsut looking at them, there's some cool little juxtapositions you've got. The Wyches have a shock of blue hair on top, the Kabalites have blue tabards at the bottom. Add that to the darker overall look and they'll compliment very nicely!

Thank you for the kind words everyone. I'm fairly happy with the results and so I'll be doing the rest of my Kabalites in this manner. This guys needs some more details added (his eyes, basing and some touch ups) and I'm really on the fence about his tabard, I may change how I paint that part. I won't be able to paint for a few days as I'm headed out of town. I'll be sunday night and may find the energy to wrap this gentleman up then.
