Hmmm, black team versus white team.

You could go with multiple combinations, and are you planning on using just infantry type models so they fit in the squares of standard chess board? Or you going to make a big chess board to cater for tanks etc.

Space Marines vs Chaos Space Marines
Eldar vs Dark Edlar
IG vs Orks

You could do a chaos vs imperial set easily guardsmen and cultists as pawns, Imperial fists and Iron warriors on some rubble as rooks, chaplain and dark apostles as bishops with iconography heavy bases, bikers popping wheelies for knights, a canoness and daemonette as the queen, and a chaos lord and chapter master of the king.

Infantry to fit on smaller board. I should phrase the question better. Which armies would you like to see play against each other?

I guess I would need to find a chess board with a stone look.

Paint the board and rule lines with a magic marker or sharpie, then purity seal. Build it out of plasticard.

For models, you could use SM vs CSM as they are fairly recognisable.

Pawns = Tactical and Chaos Marines (Bolters)
Rooks = Devastators and Havocs (Heavy Weapons of own choice)
Bishop = Chaplains and Dark Apostlez
Knight = Assault Marine and Raptor (with Jump Pack)
Queen = Librarian and Sorcerer
King = Captain/Chapter Master and Chaos Lord

Everything mounted on 25mm bases so you can rule your squares 40mm square to accommodate for weapons and poses.

Something interesting you could do would be to have an outlying area of the board with a "Chronometre" painted on to set a clock, and spaces for each captured piece. 17 25mm circles on while you set your opponent's captured pieces.

Ooh, and just so there's no confusion for anyone who might not play 40k, painted the Ultrmarine bases white and leave the Word Bearer's bases black.

Apparently, Chess boards are extremely expensive. I'm talking hundreds. http://www.thechessstore.com/#!product/CB509RIT/Gray-Erable-Chess-Board-with-Variegated-Frame-2-375-

I can't decide on a board though. It probably needs a stone look.

This project will probably have to wait a few years. I still need to build my Eldar army, and I'm planning on getting a commission for the whole thing.

As a chess player, I've often thought this would be a fun idea. I would keep it somewhat traditional (to make it easy for non 40K players). Some sort of white space marine army with a black chaos marine army would look good.

Yes but, White Scars vs Black Legion is very boring... I'd be more interested in Black Templars vs World Eaters, giving it a Checkers look of black vs red. Added bonus, goes well with a dark mahogany table. And nothing could beat Beserkers vs robed Templars with swords as Pawns... That's just an awesome visual. And Terminators as Rooks would be very impressive as well. The tusked Chaos and shielded Templar Terminators...

I've thought about doing something similar, more than once, but the deal breaker always seems to be buying and painting those chaos marines.

Many of those thing could be gotten off Ebay or the like. Certainly, a Dark Vengeance Lord and Librarian could be gotten that way, while a single SM Tactical Squad and CSM Squad box would net you all the pawns and the Rooks. Chaplains, Captain and Assault Marines could all easily be made from the Vanguard box for dynamic poses. Raptors and Sorcerer and Dark Apostle could all be Ebayed.

That would help keep cost down. Then the only issue is painting.

Having thought of various chess sets myself, may I suggest going to Home Depot. You can get small scale amounts of square stone tiles. Get two different colors and tile on top of some wood cut to size.

Black Legion would work just nice with blasted, rocky, lava strewn bases.

Any space marine legion of preference with lots of white tabards and bases to look like white marble.

Framing the chess board would be city ruins with rubble.
Not sure what to use for the squares.

Probably work

I actually started a project to do this very thing some time ago. I never finished it.

I was making my own board. I used a picture frame for a border for the board, and the board itself was going to be 1.5" squares of styrene flocked with gravel, spray painted black and white as appropriate.

I didn't commit any models to it, but I was thinking the following:

CSM/Imperium

Guardsmen/Cultists = pawns
Termy with storm shield/thunder hammer = rooks
Chaplin (and whatever the chaos version is) = bishops
Assault Marines = knights
Librarians/sorcerers = queens (think GOI)
Draigo or maybe Calgar/Abbadon = Kings
