I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to see an advanced screening of the film, so I took it.

Overall, it was entertaining. A lot of laughs in the theater. While some of it is different, I think they did a decent job of capturing the spirit of TMNT, particularly the turtles themselves and the way they interact with each other. The turtles faces still are a bit weird to me, but I was able to get over it. There were some little things that I thought could have been better, but I would still go watch it again. It might not be the TMNT film that I would have hoped for, but it's satisfying enough, and brings the TMNT back to the big screen in a way that I think will be accessible to new fans and still entertaining for old fans.

Spoiler:
I thought they did a good job illustrating the general skill levels between the different characters. Splinter is pretty clearly shown to be a superior ninja compared to Shredder. He has the upper hand for pretty much the whole beginning of the fight equipped only with a katana and completely unarmored, and is only really overcome due to Shredder's more advanced equipment. Shredder is still shown to be skilled though, as it takes all four turtles to overcome him.

My only real complaints are that for awhile, the film seemed to be more about April than the turtles, but that shifted as the movie went along. This version of Splinter was also not my favorite in terms of his voice, but it was growing on me towards the end.

Good things: The interactions between the brothers were well done, and the comic relief, a lot but not all of which came from Mike, was well done without being too cheesy, and captured their individual personalities well. Also, the turtles aren't aliens, so that's awesome. I was a bit on the fence with Splinter learning Ninjitsu from a book and teaching the turtles, but I suppose it makes about as much sense as a non-mutated rat learning it from watching his owner. It makes sense that they would be able to learn more quickly after being mutated anyway.

I also didn't really appreciate that they used the name Sachs for Shredder's corporate backing. I felt like that could have been used as a nod to Stockman instead. But whatever, that's a small gripe I suppose. I liked that they had April in a yellow jacket a lot of the time though. That was a nice touch.

Overall, I wasn't blown away, but it was entertaining and had some fun moments. I would see it again. If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask.

Hey, no problem. Glad I could help out. I figured there'd be some Dakkaites who would want to know about it.

I was really afraid when we found out that Michael Bay was directing it (especially after all those "the turtles are aliens in the new movie" rumors), that I would feel like he ruined the turtles. But while there are some little differences, and it's not the best movie ever, it's still definitely a Ninja Turtles film, which is about as much as I was hoping for.

Important question: do they keep the line in about (think it was Raph) doing his "Batman voice" from the trailer? If so, I'll see it in theaters, if just for a couple yuks. If not, then they pulled the best line from the trailers and I'll wait til DVD release from Redbox.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Yes, that's still in there. The whole scene is actually pretty funny.

Is the quasi "I'm sorry about that" from Bay in the movie?

I think one of the previews had somebody asking Megan Fox "so....they are like aliens" and her replying "No, that's just stupid" or something like that. I thought that was a nice touch about the whole situation.

Yeah, that was in there, and I totally agree. It was a nice nod to and quasi-apology for that horrible idea.

It needs to look like [ spoiler ] text to be spoiled here [ /spoiler ] without the spaces.

I'm a little torn on this one. One the one hand, it looks sort of terrible, and also, Megan Fox and Michael Bay. On the other hand, Michael Bay might be a really good fit for the weird sort of action that the turtles need. I am leaning towards seeing it, though, especially seeing here it was alright.

Thanks, Hordini. With ha scene still in (I expected lawyers to shut it down, honestly), and hearing that its a riot, I'm gonna see it in theaters. Sounds like it doesn't take itself seriously (proving Mike's mask comment wasn't a unique line), and I appreciate that in a movie about teenagers. You got the brooder, the brain, the tactician, and the goofball, but above all you have 4 teenage brothers. They should be cracking wise, and acting like they're invincible-because they are: they're teenagers. So it sounds like, by your review, Michael Bay actually got it right. I'm cautiously optimistic at this point, which is a huge change from "not touching this with somebody else's wallet".

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Yeah, everything wrong with bayformers actually makes sense for bayturtles.

Especially since super hardcore turtles are a fringe and the old TMNT cartoon was friggin campy as crap. Anyone who says differently has childhood rose-colored glasses on, as Shredder and Krang fighting like an old married couple was as campy as it gets.

From everything I have *heard* it is no worse than the existing turtle movies, which still hold up. And if they make 3 more movies like it, it will be acceptable. I am looking forward to it.

Ehhh, I really don't want to support Michael Bay, but I will probably see this on DVD as I like the ninja turtles. :/ Good to hear it wasn't total gak.

When it comes to Michael Bay you have to have the right attitude. This is how our group looks at it.
"We go to a Michael Bay Movies to watch SPOSIONS!!!!!!!"
"If a plot happens to accidently wander over from the set across the way all the better!"

Funny I told myself that before watching pearl harbor, and god was I mistaken.

But it sounds like it might be reasonable of a flim thus far, nothing breaking just a popcorn eater.

Rise thread... Riiiiiiiiiiise!

Let me frame my critique:

I am a huge Transformers Geewuner. That means I love transformers, am resistant to change, "Trukk not munkey" and totally embraced beast wars when it became part of the G1 continuity. Michael Bay *raped* my childhood. I hate the new TF franchise, I hate the designs, I hate the plot, I hate the origins, I hate everything. They did everything wrong. I hate it so much I didn't even bother to see TF4.

So here I am, opening night, first showing at TMNT.

TL;DR: It was great. Really great.

*The turtle designs *TOTALLY* work
*Megan Fox is not only passable, but actually REALLY GOOD in her role, and the story and writing of April Oneal as a character makes her not just a passable plot partner for the viewers to ride with but an actual part of the team. When at the end she says "we are family" you can actually believe it.
*The shredder is good, the character is good, and the 'suit' is not dumb.
*The major 'changes' to the origins and the 'ooze' work, make more sense and is a much better and reasonable story which totally works. It basically took the stupidity of the new spiderman's Ozcorp and made it reasonable.
*Splinter was a great character.

But the movie shines is the turtles characters. It was like a 2-hour live action episode from the original turtles cartoon. They stuck so close to the original spirit of the cartoon.

The true test was the 12 little kids who were marched in, wearing ninja turtle costumes... HYPNOTIZED. Not a peep. When small kids shut the hell up and watch the movie, it is good. And it was actually appropriate for a PG-13 movie.

See it. Make more. I didn't think it was possible to rival the original 1991 live action movie, but it might have dethroned it as the best of the franchise.

With the perspective that a few days provides, I can confidently say that this Ninja Turtles film is better than both TMNT II: Secret of the Ooze and TMNT III. I would rather watch this one again than either of those.

I can't decide whether or not I like this one better than the first TMNT film, but it's definitely closer to that one than TMNT II and III.

And describing it as a two-hour long live action episode of the cartoon is actually not too far off.

Please do follow up here. I couldn't bring myself to see the new Transformers even despite Grimlock, but this one looks like it might be stupid yet fun.

Rotten tomatoes is panning it, but all the "negative" comments don't even really seem negative. So...fail reviews?

Wow. It actually has a lower rating than TMNT III. There is no way that the new Turtles film is worse than TMNT III. The new film is incredibly better than TMNT III.

Apes and Hercules are good movies too. I will say, if you don't like Ninja turtles as a concept, this movie may not be very good for you. Same way someone who dislikes murder mysteries would be bored watching murder she wrote. But if you *like* turtles, it is a good turtles movie. I just didn't think it was as bad as the reviews made it. I think this was much better than both new spidermans which is the closest movie I can compare it to as a 'here is a movie about a specific hero story which if you don't like the franchise, you have no point in seeing it.'
