Your comment that you won't take advice from someone who doesn't have sex is completely unfounded. People without sexual experience can be more than qualified to give advice.

Did I limit my post to sex alone?

If you willingly permanently limit your perception of happiness, you aren't eglible to give advice to others.

Why does he have to experience happiness in the same way as you? Some people find happiness in marriage and parenting, maybe he finds happiness in different ways.

A few months ago, the Pope mentioned that while it is good to have pets people should not substitute pets for having children. He explained that having children in the prime of one's life helps to avoid loneliness and abandonment at the end of one's life. If you think about this for just a moment, it becomes clear that he is indeed speaking from experience on these issues.

Perhaps anglophonic societies are the most extreme cases but these tendencies exist throughout the West.

Maybe having lots of sex was going to be his 11th top tip but he decided it would look hypocritical to pontificate about it.

You're not the leader of any religion.

Sorry but how many babes has the Dali Lama banged again?

Besides, from the history of Popes, he could have wives and lots of kids.

Why do people assume sex=happiness?

First of all, I want to emphazize on the children part.

Secondly...ehm...are you seriously asking how sex equals to happiness? I suggest doing some field studies

How about long term happiness. Who do you think has a more enjoyable life as a whole. The guy who hangs around bars looking to get laid, or the guy who forms lasting friendships?

Spoken like someone that hasn't had a ton of sex or been in a relationship that involves it.

Believe it or not, but some of the best sex is with the person with whom you have a lasting friendship.

Although I was thinking that equating sex and happiness is something a virgin would do. You can have either without the other.

What you're talking about is more like the place where sex and happiness meet.

There's always adoption. It isn't necessarily the hardest thing to have surrogate children, especially if you help out at shelters or orphanages.

And for those who can't afford the fees, deal with the paperwork, deal with the adoption process? Adoption is not an easy process.

Not to mention the many shady adoption agencies that convince families they are helping a child when in reality the child was stolen from his/her parents.

Even speaking as an atheist, I really like this Pope. He just seems like a genuinely nice guy.

He's going to be a tough act to follow.

I'd actually put money on him being canonised a saint by his successor at some point. I'm not too hot on the history of it but I'm sure people have been canonised for less!

Talking tough only works if you've got an audience. This pope's not been in place all that long, and building a rep takes time. I guess he'll get tough when he has to, and you'll know it when he does.
Unlikely, from what I've heard of him, but he has a job to do. When it hits the fan, he'll be ready....

As for family, even if he has no kids of his own, I bet he has babysat for his nieces and nephews, etc.

I think someone on this forum once said that having sex, getting married, and having kids are three things you can't fully understand until you've done them. I'm three-for-three and tend to agree. So I understand the criticism. However, I still think a priest can have valuable things to say about marriage and children.

Someday I'd like to see the church adopt the Orthodox model with regards to priests having families. It'd create a few new issues for the church to deal with, but overall I think it'd be a positive for everyone. I don't think it'll happen in my lifetime, however.

The thing is, he's built up a great reputation in a relatively short amount of time.
