So I have always wanted to get an army for epic, but never really had the money to do so because of 40k. And after that I didn't have any money because of video games. But now I have started to get back into Warhammer, thanks in part to trying to teach BFG to my board game group (And the fact there is no game I'm interested in coming out in months) , and from also from getting really excited (then getting a bit disappointed) about buying a new sketchbook (More details about that here. )

Now, the reason why I am interested in getting a squat army is quite simple. I came across an image of a squat army, and...

I ing love trains in games. My favorite Forge World model(s) is the Chaos Dwarf train set.

But the reason why I'm asking if they are viable is because I know Squats aren't exactly canon anymore, and they don't have any official updated rules. Would anyone care (other than some WAAC TFG like this) if I played them and used the custom rules that are available? And if so, how should I go about painting them? I haven't touched a brush in years, and even then my best work was a completely painted white model with a few dabs of wash on it. And I have never worked on anything that small before. Little help?

Squats are actually a really good army under Epic Armageddon rules, but the main problem is finding models. It's really hard to find Squat stuff these days and it tends to be expensive.

Hop on over to the home of Epic on the net - Tactical Command - http://www.tacticalwargames.net/taccmd/index.php

You'll find a lot more information there, including rules, army lists, etc.

Thanks! But I actually found a decent amount of models for it just on Ebay, and I'm not exactly in a rush to buy an army. Probably will just buy a few models at a time.

GW aren't involved anymore, so in that respect there's no "official" updated ruleset. However, Epic: Armageddon was written with a lot of player input, and after GW pulled support, the players basically just continued writing and playtesting new rules. This includes rules for Squats - found at taccom, as linked - and to the extent that Epic is played, it is with these fan-written rules. So what I'm saying is, feel free to consider the rules for Squats as official as any others. Otherwise Tyranids, Necrons, Dark Eldar, Sisters of Battle, Tau and Titan Legions, among others, wouldn't have rules either. I'm not sure if Chaos even got official rules before GW pulled the plug.

Are Squats viable? As viable as any other army in Epic. Would I play them? Not unless I had a lot of patience and pretty deep pockets. The Ebay prices, at least here in the UK anyway, are on a par with Epic Tyranid prices.
