I'm loving how although Jill apparently wondered ""why no one looked at her .. that way" that when your friend did, she reported it. I'd actually pretty much not talk to her at all, she sounds like trouble.

Hearing all this ' work at work' stuff makes me glad I work in small business where this crap doesn't exist. Hell, I think I sexually harass my boss sometimes , meh he finds it funny. I dunno work is supposed to be fun, how it remains fun when what you can say is restricted, I don't know, 'work at work ' sounds dull....really dull.

To be honest when I have worked in female dom inated work places (and I';ve worked a few) I found that innapropriate comments happen with as much frequency as male dominated work places, that's just people.

I have found this to absolutely be true. The amount of inappropriate discussion has always tended to be greater in jobs with a younger workforce, rather than break down among gender lines, in my extremely anecdotal experience. Obviously every company culture is a bit different.

This is a common idea in academia. Those in the group with power cannot be the victim of 'isms'.

Of course it's absolute bunk , and legally bunk. So yourself a favor though and don't argue against it. The academic PC cop in your professor will become enraged. Just play the game, get your grade and move on. I made that mistake once about racism with an African-American Sociology professor once, and was near crucified for it. Dude started grading my papers worse, no one in his department would listen to me, and I had to drop the class.

I'm a fairly liberal person, but I learned a lot that day about what 'free thought' means to means to many academics...'you're free to agree with me'.

I did that in a "woman and the law" class my last year of law school. It was me vs. 9 wimminz and one "wussified" male who did what he was told. Odds were almost even. It was the highlight of my final semester but strangely I only got a B.

@Krellnus: Was an attempt at a joke about academia. When I was in college in the mid to late 90s in the US, academia was largely overrun by professors trapped iin the 60s, still fighting against 1950's culture....maybe things have changed in the last 15 years.

No, because it is completely possible for a discrete group to be powerless in one situation, and it is not discrimination against them to recognise this.

However women of course are not inherently powerless in the workplace, even though they in general hold less power than men there.

The professor is wrong in law, though. Women can sexually harass men or women in the workplace.

In my work experience, I have worked with two guys that have been fired for sexual harrassment. Presumably they could not have been fired without having gone through this process, so I'd say Yes.

I have also been through numerous trainings triggered by unspecified sexual harrassment incidents.

Many companies also have annual compliance training and new employee training. One of ours is a workplace harassment video which includes sexual harassment. At the end, you have to sign an electronic document for HR which shows you are aware and abide by these rules.

"I didn't know" no longer becomes an excuse. I have never worked anywhere in my 20+ years of work which didn't have this. Even my dumpy little park job when I was 14 had sexual harassment training.

@ the OP: who was right and who was wrong? Easy.

Who was right: The manager who fired your friend.

Who was wrong: Literally everyone else. For reals. Your friend and you spoke inappropriately about inappropriate subjects in the workplace, the woman also spoke about inappropriate subjects in the workplace, your friend sent a text soliciting sex, and that other manager guy spoke about a confidential subject to two strangers at a bar. All of you are/were wrong. Follow the level-headed advice that pops up in this thread about keeping your mouth shut and avoiding the woman as much as you can. Don't talk about chicks or sex with anyone at yor place of work (unless you work at a chicken farm or a porn studio) and avoid being alone in a room with this woman as hard as you can.

Yep. Not just sex, but anything that can reasonable make someone feel uncomfortable. Most companies will have a policy as part of their staff handbook.

My dad got to interview a guy trying to work at the same establishment as him (they didn't hire the guy, as he was weird... and a serious kind of weird)... As before, I am no expert on US employment law, but in the UK both of those are kind of incorrect. The first is personal information. There is still a case for privacy. The restrictions on what people say in references has nothing to do with saying nothing bad, but privacy of the parties involved, and ass covering, as the bar for firing someone is much lower than the bar for defamation.

It's not a matter of not going through the process, but that the process says that for gross misconduct no warning is needed. Kind of the difference between no tax and a zero rate of tax. The outcome may be the same, but the underlying principal is different.
