Subject: New to Infinity: what to expect?

Hi all,
So I decided to take the plunge into infinity. I preordered Operation Icestorm, with the Gencon pack (seemed like a nice deal?), and I also picked up a Reverend Custodiers for Nomads (the one with a combi-rifle). I have no idea what she does, but I really liked the model so...
I did have a few questions:
Will I be able to use the Gencon Penthesilea Biker model with either of the starter factions (for example as a merc)? Or is she only for Aleph? (Or even as a proxy?)
I assume that the NeoTerra Bolt, Reverend Custodiers, and CSU will fit into a either PanOceania or Nomad list, is that correct? (Will that work?)
And err... Once you've started buying Infinity miniatures, how are you supposed to stop yourself? They all look so tempting.

Great to have you here Smacks! Often enjoy reading some of your posts in other sections of the forum.
The Reverend Custodier mini with combi rifle is certainly a beautiful miniature, really effective hacker as well (you will find one of Nomads strengths) and also a cheap SWC choice for your lieutenant.
Will I be able to use the Gencon Penthesilea Biker model with either of the starter factions (for example as a merc)?
Hmm as far as I know not for ITS (the official tournament lists). I know people are planning to use this mini as a stand-in for either the proper Penthouse miniature, or as a Kum Biker for Haqqislam. The only thing I could think you could use it as is a 'counts as' Yojimbo.
Otherwise, you can use it as a 'merc', taking those rules from another list, but it would be a friendly game/opponents consent type of thing.
I assume that the NeoTerra Bolt, Reverend Custodiers, and CSU will fit into a either PanOceania or Nomad list, is that correct? (Will that work?)
Neoterra Bolts are standard Pan O (limit, or ' AVA' of 3), or as many as you want in the Noeterran Capitaline army (which is a Pan O Sectorial). They can't be used in any other faction
Reverend Custodiers are Nomad only - AVA 2 in the standard Nomad force, 3 in Jurisdictional Command of Bakunin
CSU is a civilian unit as far as I know. There will probably be some special rules & scenario involving her.
And err... Once you've started buying Infinity miniatures, how are you supposed to stop yourself?
When you find the answer to this one, please let me know!

Good lord me too! Though I'm currently trying to blast through ten or so with as much enthusiasm and grit as I can, I've still got way too many of these things for having never legitimately played the game!
CSU may get a merc profile at some point, right now I think she's just part of the last mission of icestorm as kind of a shoots-at-everyone-environmental-hazzard kind of thing.
Combi custodier is awesome, I just wish they had three sculpts of them total so I could make a link team without converting, we'll see though! She should have a marker too, which when combined with her ability to act as a forward observer (due to her hacking device plus) allows you to do all kinds of dirty tricks like guided missile spam and other unpleasant things.

Thank you loads Pacific, exalt from me for helpfulness! I actually don't think I have any more questions now, at least until my stuff arrives haha. I'm super excited to be joining the party though! I didn't realize until yesterday that infinity already had its own forum on dakka (with three boards!), I half expected to be kicking-it down in Other Games. Things must be really gathering steam. GrimDork! The hacking aspect sounds like such an amazing dynamic to have in a skirmish game. I can't wait to see how all that works. I don't know if it'll make an appearance in Icestorm (I might have to wait a bit), but I'm big fan of games like Netrunner and Syndicate so that's something I'm really looking forward to delving into.

I don't think I saw any hacking in icestorm, but it's supposed to get several pages in the new n3 rules whenever they show up.

Rigid self-discipline. Not something many gamers tend to have.
I'm serious. I manage to not buy them all because I don't actually LIKE all the sculpts (from a personal aesthetic choice standpoint).
They are all technically good, but not the kind of things I like. This makes it easy for me to NOT buy stuff. I also came from a background where I didn't have a lot of money and could only get what I wanted if I really liked it enough to save for it. This happened for long enough that it became ingrained.

Icestorm have no hackers and no hacker rules because supposedly the rule book would had needed to be twice as thick if it did or whatever .. uhm.. is it Carlos? said on Beast of War.
I don't remember, anyway the rules isn't there because hacking is more complicated.
The rule book DO contain suggested add-ons to bring it up to a 10 unit 300p army and that include two of the stronger hackers whatever those was called and one TAG in the case of Nomads.

Simple! You find other people's awesome lists that you like the look of.
And that kind of steers your miniature choices because you have to play the game as well.
The whole "It's not your list, it's you" ethos isn't entirely true.
Because you'll still need a good list - but you'll need one which suits your playing style.

Most tabletop games seem like a simple concept, but can become a morass of confusing and conflicting special rules.
Infinity at first seems like a morass of confusing and conflicting special rules, but after playing it for a bit, it becomes a simple concept.
In other words: It's really, really hard to figure the game out from the rulebook and youtube videos. You really want to play with other people who know the game.
And as to stopping yourself from buying too many miniatures...well, let it put it this way. For the fun of it, I put together a "wish list" for various miniatures games, and the cost of a decent sized unit of (say) Dwarf Ironbreakers is about the same as building an entire Infinity Army. So you're SAVING money by playing Infinity! (And your army is smaller, so you don't need to spend as much on cases/storage!)

Yes, that's nearly 50 Infantry sized Infinity models, between Haqqislam and Tohaa. Including 3 TAGs.

I've actually stopped buying Infinity models in order to work through what I have. There's stuff in there I've never used, so it's not like I'm buying new stuff for more gameplay options. I've bought some Malifaux lately, but now I'm focussing on getting terrain and painting it up (for both games). There comes a point when you look at your unpainted pile and just think '... really?'. I reached that point. To be fair, I've painted a lot lately. The last 2 months have been the most productive I've ever been - just for Infinity I finished about 5 models. That's fast for me. So I've definitely taking the backlog issue seriously. Mostly because I want to buy the new Ghazi, and won't let myself until I've made serious inroads into my backlog.

Yeah, it got like that with Super Dungeon Explore. I think I mainly bought it for the models to paint, but now with the expansions I've got something like ~120 odd models, and probably the same again on the way with the new Kickstarter. And Arcadia Quest coming too. Not to mention Zombicide! Erghh, I don't wanna even think about attempting Zombicide. Infinity is going to be different though. I've decided that as soon as it arrives, I'm gonna just spray each team one colour and dip. So I can start playing right away. Maybe later I'll do all the flesh, or all the weapons, and work through them like that. But I want to do it such a way that they never look half painted. I'm done with having miniatures all at different stages and looking messy.

heh, I have the opposite problem; the Infinity sculpts are so good, I'm afraid to paint them, because I'm convinced I'll screw it up.
If they end up turning out all right, it's because of the noble sacrifices of the ugliest block of Empire State Troops this side of Nordland.

I used to feel like that. Then I got sick of having unpainted models.
The thing to remember with Infinity models is they have very sharp details, so they take to washes very well.

Yeah I was kind of afraid to paint my nomads for some reason. I picked up some shasvastii and I've been painting the crap out of them, maybe 'cause they're aliens and I have less ingrained expectations for how they should look... Hoping the momentum from these carries me back into the human models.

Yeah I've noticed this too. When I'm painting for other people it's so much faster and better. I painted all of my friend's Project Pandora game in a single morning (Christmas morning in fact). I also helped another friend paint their Mansions of Madness game, which we got through in about 3 afternoons. That one always gets compliments for how nicely it's painted too. Yet when it comes to my own stuff I seem to get too fussy. I'll spend the whole evening on something silly like painting a cape. Then I'll get annoyed that it didn't turn out perfect and drop it in stripper.

LoL. In my case it's closer to triple the infantry and 8 TAGs.
But that IS 4 separate armies over 6+y ears. I started with a starter and a couple of blisters. Then got another starter and a couple of blisters.
Before I knew it, I was mainlining the rules.
Even then, I've spent less than 10% of what I had spent on GW (but that was over 25+ years).

My steps for painting Infinity.
1. base coat
2. Basic colors
3. details
4. step back and think "I freaking suck at painting!"
5. Apply wash
6. step back and think "Wow! That looks amazing!"

I haven't painted any infinity yet. Juggling infinity, some police and some samurai and I have some deadzone stuff tucked away that I lost interest in the moment it arrived.
Won't be getting anything incompatible with what I am already working on for a good while because I want to collect to paint and play not collect for the sake of collecting,

Coming from a GW/ PP gaming background I was amazed at how quick the game was.
And also how much can be done in the reactive phases.
I for one will be tailoring a little bit of my list to act as reaction specialists. Which is easy playing Bakunin Sectorial.
Plus the minis look great.

THIS.
I've mentioned it elsewhere, but I reckon I'll have a better chance of getting 'normal' people to play a TTG with me if the bits are just Red v Blue. So I'll pick up some AP spray cans and get to work. Blue Pan O and Red Nomads, A cheeky wash (and maybe paint weapons black) then get gaming. Automatically Appended Next Post: Smacks wrote:

I feel that. I start out with a really basic "Base, Wash, Dry brush, Details" then add more and more and more stages until it's ridiculous. I had an 8 stage 'recipe' for realistic alligator themed Saurus warriors. I can't even name 3 of the paints I used now.
My silver Marines have had like 5 different dry brush and wash layers. The newer ones look much shinier, so I obviously did something wrong on that lot. SHEEEESH.
Really hoping that Infinity will be a fresh start for painting as well as playing.
