Just sitting here, looking at the following vehicles I need to finish for my Guard army to be "complete", I.E. everything I use regularly painted, and finished to a standard I'm content with.

Chimera (Basecoated black, tracks not yet put on, need to get some track guards for it)
Leman Russ Vanquisher Turret (Hull is finished, turret basecoated black)
Leman Russ Exterminator (Basecoated black)
Leman Russ Executioner (Turret is painted, hull is basecoated black)
Leman Russ Eradicator (Basecoated Black)
Valkyrie Transport (Assembled, no paint what-so-ever)
Vendetta Gunship (Basecoated black and has the initial layer of Karak Stone base color laid down)
2x Armored Sentinels (Basecoated black)
Devil Dog tank (Basecoated black)

I have a smattering of infantry left to throw in between the odd tank also to break up the monotony.

All vehicles are going to be painted to this standard:

I'm sitting here, having just finished the executioner turret off, and am feeling a tad overwhelmed with the prospect. I'll get it done, just wondering how others might share this plight, and how you keep yourself motivated to push through a backlog till you finish what you want to work on?

My priority is going to be finishing off the Executioner, Eradicator, Chimera, Vanquisher, and Exterminator first, then my Vendetta and Valkyrie, and my sentinels. After that, I'll hopefully be in the home stretch for infantry, and can get my Devil Dog finished off.

Thanks for reading, and take it easy everyone.

I have really limited play time, and even more limited modeling/painting time. I just finished my first trygon, and that was my first MC, since 2nd edtion. Spent over 6 months doing a little bit, then putting it aside for weeks at a time. Working on my hive tyrant now, hope to get it done before 2015.

I like how the tank came out.

Put away all models out of sight.
Not seeing them actually makes it better, instead line up your finished models. Seeing the progress is more motivating than seeing your to-do-line.
Concentrate on one model at a time with the tanks.
And, in the end, just get going..

That's my typical painting M.O., honestly.

At current I've got the conundrum of having three tanks all at some level of 'nearly there', hulls finished and turrets waiting to be started, or in the case of one of the tanks, the turret is now completely finished (including a magentized pintle heavy stubber) but the hull is just basecoated black.

I think the first order of business is to finish off the first squadron, which is the Executioner and Eradicator variants. Once they're done, I'll be able to get started on the second squadron, consisting of the Vanquisher and Exterminator. After that, I'll try and knock the Chimera out, and move on to the flyers.

Need to take a week off work to devote some time to just painting. Last three months have been hectic and I haven't had time to decompress (Painting being my preferred method of managing this) to speak of. Ah well.

Thank you for that also Rumbleguts, I appreciate it. I'm very happy with how the tanks in the army are shaping up. So far I've got a pair of Chimeras and a pair of old-school Griffon Mortars on new-school chimera hulls I'm using as Vostroyan pattern Wyvern mortar tanks, in addition to the painted leman russ hull above that I've sorted over to being a Vanquisher instead of a Demolisher. I love the Demolisher, but the points cost to field one, coupled with the ordnance rule making it so all other weapons only snap fire if the big gun fires, lends me to field non-ordnance Russes at current. I love some large blasts, but hate putting an ordnance weapon on a tank designed to roll around and shoot more than one gun at a time.

It seems silly to have the Heavy Tank rule allowing you to move and fire everything as if you're stationary, then put an ordnance weapon on the hull so that as long as it's firing (and it should if it can..) it makes the other weapons nigh-useless, or unable to fire at all if you run the hull heavy flamer.

Getting off topic there. With that said, I digress for now.

Gonna get back at it for a little longer before I go hug a pillow before work.

Take it easy for now and thanks for the input so far, guys.

I was in the same situation as you once. I had a whole Black templar Crusade in need of painting. Every model had around 8 colors or more. Highlights were done by hand, the eyes had glow effects and washes were used sparingly. I could only churn out around 2 models a day at this standard and, with time pressing, this would probably get slower. So... I just lowered my standards. I've reduced the colors used per model to five and the time to around .75/hour.

They look decent especially for the time per model spent. So I can finally stop fielded grey/partially painted armies.

Thought for the day: Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.
30k Ultramarines: 2000 pts
Bolt Action Germans: ~1200 pts
AOS Stormcast: Just starting.
The Empire : ~60-70 models.
1500 pts

Do you have an airbrush? An airbrush can make short work of tabletop standard vehicles and is well worth the investment.

I tend to get to a point of near completion, get bored and move on to something else. Its all those little bits and bobs that really are annoying to finish, however not buying any more models and having all sorts to finish off will keep me busy for some time to come. Take things one at a time, and do not rush, my Imperial knight maybe "battle ready" but still requires a few hours work to properly finish it.

Keep up the good work

First, that tank looks awesome, do post pics of the Squadron when you get them done!

As for motivation, there are a few ways, some will work for you, some won't.

1) Paint something completely different. Do you have another 40k army or another game system? Painting up a Space Marine to a good standard after hours of basecoat-and-wash guardsmen is something I find rewarding.

2) Line up your finished stuff somewhere in view of your desk if you can. Seeing what you've already done is far better than looking at half finished stuff. When it's done, add it to the display and it's instantly part of something.

3) Pick an afternoon/evening where you have nothing else on, and tell yourself you're going to just do it. Put on some music/a podcast/a TV show you've seen enough to not need to watch intently, and just go for it. Sometimes, one effort is better than dragging it out.

Sounds good bud. Start up a thread in the P&M forum and set up a goal for the coming month with before pictures & I'll add a reply to it with my own before pictures for the month.

Thank you kindly Paradigm, I'll hopefully have finished squadron pictures up soon. *Knocks on wood*

As for your suggestions, I've actually been painting on a Deathwatch space marine force pretty hard for the last few weeks, check my gallery for the fruits of that labor if ya like.

I typically do put finished models up where I can see them & use that as motivation for continued motivation while keeping the backlog out of my direct line of sight, usually on a shelf behind me as I paint.

And yea, I paint on my days off in the wee hours of the morning, as I'm usually up and awake at that time. I work 12 hour night shifts so on nights off that's my best method to zone out & decompress with some good music and paint brushes.

I'm working all this weekend (3 shifts, Fri, Sat, and Sun), but Monday I'm going to attack painting in earnest & see what I can get done. We'll see.

Thanks for all the positive feedback thus far guys, it is greatly appreciated.

Take it easy just for now.
