Hi all,
I was wondering how survivable are they?
Is there a core set of units to use with it or nearby (i'll be running it with my space marines)?
Or is best to use a differnt varient such as the hell hammer of stormlord?
Thanks.

If you don't want to go unbound, you have to bring a Combined Arms Detachment of Astra Militarum. I have a Tank Commander squadron as my HQ, and Veterans holding down the Firestorm Redoubt for mine (I'm Grey Knights and we don't have any ranged units to speak of).
The only two Baneblade varients I've found to be worth taking at all are the ones with Ignores Cover. It doesn't matter if you have AP1 at long range if everything has a 4+ cover save from ruins or Fortifications, which is the case in all of the games I've fielded them.
The Baneblade varients are extremely survivable, but I would caution against bringing them for any game smaller than 3000 points, because they don't kill enough to be worth their points unless the board is too crowded for your opponent to spread out his units. Again, take one with Ignores Cover if you want to actually kill stuff with it.
Don't be surprised if your opponent ignores it. If they can't statistically kill it by turn 3, they probably won't bother trying, and will instead be focused on grabbing objectives and killing everything else you brought to take objectives.

Thanks for this, some good points in there. I completey over looked the whole allied detachment bit.

He's right but I wouldn't consider the Baneblade itself worthless. It can still do a lot of damage.

What about the artillery version (Banesword I think)
Doesn't outright ignore cover but does render much of it useless.

How do you figure? How are their cover saves useless if they are still taking them?

Doesn't it have barrage?
That should reduce their ability to claim cover considerably.

I have the Apocalypse book, which states the Quake Cannon's profile is:
24-180" S9 AP3 Primary Weapon 1, Apocalyptic Blast
It might be different in Escalation, but all the ones I checked were the same.

Well.. that's odd. I could've sworn it was barrage.
Disregard my earlier comment then, as it's no longer valid.

Its a waste. Unless you roll a 6 your opponent still gets his cover and invuln save. Ive tested it out and with how easy it is for your opponent to get coverr the tank primarily didnt do much. Not to mention its only a large blast that can scatter.
