When an attack such as this says it deals 1 damage, is that automatic or does the model affected get to roll a defense dice?

It's automatic. Dealing damage directly is nasty,

Edited to remove erroneous info.

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k.                                                                                                       Rule #1

With the big Tantive IV on sale at miniaturemarket today, and a score of a transport there's a possible nasty auto damage effect. There's the slicer (team/field/something) that causes 1 damage to all ships in range 1-3 I believe if they have a stress token. It costs energy, but could be fun in epic games.

Assault missiles do not bypass shields, because they deal "damage". ("each other ship at Range 1 of the defender suffers 1 damage").
Proton bombs do, because they "deal a faceup card".

Shields can eat damage, but cannot prevent being directly given a damage card.

The missiles are still nasty, though, especially on Lt. Blount. ^^

No, they do not bypass shields at all. In fact I don't think anything in the game does currently with the exception of the Rebel Transport's ability to kill ships outright.

Proton Bomb- deals a single face-up damage card to anyone standing in the wrong spot.

The 'deal damage' vs 'deal damage card (face up/down)' screws everybody up at first. It's such a fine level of interaction. Reminds me of all of magics phases and layers. The other ones in this game are things like 'perform a free focus action' versus 'assign this ship a focus token'. Then how that works with actions already taken in the round and stress.

Interestingly there is a way to have the Tantive "lock on" four times in one turn. It doesn't get you anywhere but it's entertaining to me that they were able to build that complexity but have it so subtle it never bothers play. Such great design is worth admiration.

It's one of the few games where most rules questions can be solved by just following RAW very literally. The rules are clear and consistent throughout and if two abilities have different wording, this is intentional and has different effects, like the example above.

Whoa whoa whoa. I make a mistake, I get called out on it. That's how Dakka works. Hot coals, gents, hot coals!

I guess this just means I need to play more games.

Speaking of Assault Missiles, Lt. Blount just scored 6 points of damage with one volley tonight. Spread amongst 4 models.

EDIT: Just found out Ruthlessness is Imperial Only, so I cheated a little bit. I guess army builders aren't 100% accurate on unreleased preview cards.
