Hi all,
I want to add some allies to my eldar army. I have a few reasons for doing this, the main one being that I want to try painting some non-eldar models with non-eldar colors. I also think it is a waste buying minis if you are not going to game with them (previous statement applies to me only and not to everyone obviously).

Here's a couple options I was considering:
space wolves in drop pods or rhinos led by a wolf lord in a unit of thunder wolf cav with storm shields
white scars bike squads led by a chapter master on bike
a couple big ork units in transports with a warboss or ork psyker (forcing my opponent to shoot the orks instead of my eldar for the first turn or two or risk being waag charged)
a flyrant with some cheap troops for the troop tax
some kind of tau (I would like to field one of their scary battlesuits as a tag team partner with my wraithknight)
maybe imperial knight? (less inclined to this one but I could see it being competitive)

Does anyone have any experience using eldar with allies? If you do please share. I'd prefer to hear more about people's experiences rather than opinions but if you have an opinion or think a certain ally would be competitive please share

Are you saying that because they are battle brothers and can join each others squads and use transports? Or do they really bring something to the eldar that they don't have themselves? (other than open topped transports) I'm trying to stay away from dark eldar, not because I don't like them but because I want to paint using bright colors and I think at some point I want to turn this allied detachment into an army of it's own some day

because they look the part

because they provide what Eldar lack, assault troops, long ranged cheap AI and cheap ways to take care of AV14.

because they are BB, so they can be affected by Psykic powers

because they have the speed to keep up with Eldar

I'm considering building up my Tyranids specifically for Eldar Allies. The Nid Fast Attack slot can keep up no problem, coupled with Flyrants, Mawlocs, even a Trygon Prime as Synapse, it's expensive so only 2000pt games make sense, but I like the idea of Nid MCs bringing the assault while Eldar do the Eldar things.

I've only gotten to play against (well along side) nids once and I haven't looked into their codex much. I'm definitely going to have to have a look see because I love their MC models and the prospect of the flyrant makes me feel all warm and gooey inside. Do their troops choices have anything to add? Despite the flyrant being cool as all heck I don't want unnecessary units in my allied attachments. I'd like them to be pretty points efficient. Also, side question, does the flyrant have to start in reserve like other flyers?

Also where are the assassin rules? I just started up again after quitting in 3rd and their rules used to be in the rulebook. I don't see them there now

Assassins have a Dataslate that you have to buy separate to have it legally. It is worth a look though.

Tyranids have Warriors for 110pts for 3 with decent guns (2 18" S5 and a 36" blast or Large Blast assault weapon) but 40pts can add the 10 Termagants needed for the allied detachment and they can just wander off and be forgotten. Rippers are the typical 'tax unit' taken with Deep Strike added to just sit on an objective and hide. 3 Ripper Swarms with Deep Strike for 45pts.

Flyrant doesn't start in Reserve. The Mawloc and Trygons do however so they can Deep Strike in. Raveners can also follow the Trygon in without scatter. And of course a Lictor allows all deep striking Nid units to come in without scatter within 6".

Feasting on the souls of unworthy opponents

Rx8, take a look at the Nova Open results (Tournament Discussion) and see what Eldar list won, and Eldar + Allies / took top spots at the end of the tournament.

Eldar + Eldar is the most powerful you can get, but Eldar + Dark Eldar, and Eldar + Grey Knights has a fanbase too.

Personally, I've always wanted to see someone bring a certain Black Library author's vision to life and have Eldar surfing into battle on the top of rhinos.

Darn it, I can't find the picture I'm looking for.

Are you abe to link that? I can't find it. and eldar + grey knights sounds pretty fun too. Do tyranids get the telekinesis psychic powers? I was looking through those the other day and they all sound crazy powerful

Well Tau are a popular choice, if you don't like DE. Space Marines would likely be a nice addition. Drop pods might be a big change of pace. And you can paint in dang near any colors you wish.

ya I was thinking space wolves maybe? a couple drop pod squads of grey hunters and some thunderwolf cav adds resilience, deep strike and combat to the army. ALl of which are extra things my opponent will have to worry about. Also not having to deploy the drop pod squad in the deployment phase should help mitigate the one eye open rule

adding anything to eldar will make them worse. there is absolutely no reason beyond a fluff based game to run anything but solid eldar.

I'd honestly go Grav of some sort, white scars keep up your defensive saturation of 3+ Jinkers while dealing with AV14 thanks to Grav/Melta guns, providing nice assault support, and you can take 3 squads of them with Khan, and not slowing down your entire list and being extremely versatile.

Tyranids would be a terrible option competitively, possibly the worst, and everything Tyranids do well Eldar do better. But if you do it because you love the models that's fully understandable, go Flyrant + Crone for help dealing with Airborne threats and both being able to strip 1 AV 14 HP wound a turn, although very in efficiently for the Flyrant. There is almost nothing else worthwhile taking, almost everything else is going to be the stand out easiest target to kill, as well as the slowest, as well as adding NOTHING to your army that Eldar units can't already do better. Want MCs? Your own are better designed to fit with what your army is grinch to accomplish. Mawloc is probly the least bad HQ choice since it is the cheapest, provides a decent tarpit, and situationally it's blast will get better results than just having another Wave Serpent, but it's still likely to be your armies worst unit more often than anything else. And please, don't even look at the rest of Heavy Support - nothing adds any sort of utility that you aren't already doing cheaper and better with your own units.

P.S.A. I won't read your posts if you break it into a million separate quotes and make an eyesore of it.

Well I'm thinking Pod full O'Melta, and/or Sternguard, one Pod full O'tactical, and a Captain. Wolves can do that as well as any.

sounds great! Heavily considering going out and painting up some drop pods right now lol.

I decided that I will wait for new dark eldar to come out. I think they will be next and they might get some really cool stuff. I really just hope they get a a big flying transport or something. I'd love to get a transport for a FULL unit of guardians, especially and open-topped one! So I'm just going to wait and see because if they get anything that can really combo well with eldar I might just get them and paint them in realy bright weird colors. What the brightest dark eldar color scheme you've seen? purple?

Indeed, they can excellently compliment a Eldar army as they can adapt very well to the play style of an Eldar army.

How so? / In what ways? What are good dark eldar units to take to compliment eldar?

A player in my local scene uses White Scars with Eldar. He does pretty good with them. Bikers are tough and put pressure on to hold the line where Eldar would typically fall over.

Assassins was something I thought about, using Illic as a Vindicare?

Wraithknight -> Imperial Knight conversion is something i've thought about often

In a fast moving Eldar army, I'd take one or two Warrior units with splinter cannons in Venoms.
In maelstrom missions, I'd take Wracks for holding objectives in the back field.

well, it all depends on your elder list, if you go heavy assault, bring space wolves or blood angels, if you go for shooty take Tau and provide some long range, High strength support.

The DE beast pack is one of the units I would most like to try as allies. And you can go bright on that if you want to

While badass.... unless you have the models on hand, I'd wait a few weeks and see what the Dark Eldar codex brings. It would suck to go out and buy $300 worth of models and then find out your combo is invalidated due to a new codex.

IMHO - wait on anything involving the DE, unless you already own the models.
