Aha I see with clippers and their effectiveness on them Should really get some I think sometime will make it easier as only using some cutters that are used for metals lol

The models look good throughout this thread, but the bases don't do it for me.

I sincerely hope you plan on cleaning up the edges of the bases, and don't intend to leave the sloppiness.
Even then, your bases would look a lot better with some texture paint on them.
You seem to just be slapping on Agrellan Earth and calling it good. You get a nice effect from agrellan earth, but it's awfully monotone and boring.
Better yet, get yourself some cheap cork and base off of that.

As stated, the models are good, but the bases leave a lot to be desired. It's not for lack of effort, but they just need more work which would be accomplished through better materials.

Edit: Also...I have no idea why you seem to be coating everything in liquid green stuff. That makes my head hurt, since that's not what it's for. Primer works just fine if you're trying to cover up your sticks or whatever.

I am, I paint a neeat coloured rim round them when I'm finished, each unit or sqaud has different so no one unit can be confused for another on the table top.
They all get tidied up don,t worry, cleaned, filed etc if needed n painted.

Cork, hmm sounds interesting. I'm going to drop by local art shop tmoz anyway to see what they have that's not too expensive anyway. But I'll take it on board. I'm not a pro by any means!

The barricades, it was to fill in gaps and cover up the tell tale texture of cocktail sticks I was using to build it. They had a not so nice grain/texture close up on some of them that I did not want coming through. Also was fairly easy to paint but yes I know its a odd move.

No power sword should be rusty. Electricity cleanses rust. The only way that any power weapon could possibly rust is if it were both made with poor materials, most likely a blasphemy against the omnissiah, but also left in disuse for a long period of time somewhere wet, and subsequently never cleaned or used once. In other words, this is a commissar that found a heretical sword that was abandoned in a ditch for a month and just picked it up and is ready to use it without really knowing if it works or not. Is that his story?

i was more going for the blade accumulated some dirt during the battle, blood, and other filth that accumulates on a battlefield and is no longer pristine gold but darker etc.

the battle was fierce and did not have time to clean the blade.

but now that one is in ruins!

Well Commissars do keep their blades clean, but its hard to clean a blade when you have a wave of horrific alien species, Daemons or Chaos Cultists diving on you wanting to dog pile lol

Wow them units look dangerous and mean that white helmet one certainly looks more standing out from others which gives them some diversity

While your minis don't look bad at all, I agree that they could use a little more 'umph' in the way of watered down paints, more controlled washes, and a few layers. It's really not that hard for even a novice painter to gain control of you tools and have a good looking model - just takes time, practice, and patience. I say this often and I'll say it again - check out the GWtv painting videos on youtube. If GW is doing one thing right as of late it's providing some excellent painting tutorials by studio painter Duncan Rhodes. I don't think any of the tutorials up deal with your minis in particular, but watch a few and take some notes on the colors used and apply them to your own paint schemes. Seriously, a very good way to learn how to paint with a good teacher. Still, your on a good start! Keep at it

And in regards to really building up a base, you can use something as simple as torn pieces of cork sheet to step it up a bit. I find a combination of torn cork, sculpting putty, and regular grade GW flock go a long way in making a good base. The addition of a skull or discarded helmet helps, too. It is the Grim Dark future, after all.

so still need some more wash layers but here is another white helmeted version.
ie the helmet, blue and red details etc.

Yeah, the balence was tricky mind. Took a weight or two and some adjusted rubble to make it a flat ernough surface for a good hold.

I'm planning mostly black shoulder plates + some grey and dull Wash's on brighter metal.

Aha that sounds like a good scheme for them never knew what Black Templar paints were but they sound a bit like the Ravenwing Chapter from Dark Angels by look of it similar colours

White or cream shoulder plates edged with black or red seem more fluffy but the mostly black and dark armour has a menecing quality to it. 8 foot marine charging forward with all dark armour has a good effect.

With bit of bling but that's me :-)

Aye that does give a good look to them mean after all they are Black Templars gotta have tiny bit of bling on their squad leaders to show how much they achieved in the name of the emperor

Trust me on this one...throw away the cocktail stick and pin and get some good brushes for detail work. They work 100x better for everything detail related. I remember i got hounded for trying a pin, lol.

I did, I found a decent art shop in the end to get a tiny brush. Not so cheap but a good one.good brush's never are. The other shop did not have a good quality one.

I get my brushes from Ebay, got my brother to order me some more so can hopefully start painting 100% again once they arrive ^^ hard to do fine detail with a large brush lol

big pic is everything i have just because i was adding up points, and decided to gather it in one desks spot and makes a good image.
total 4615, with 60o points in guard and 88 marines total with ones still to do on sprue, WIP and unpainted, same with guard.

WIP marines, a chaplain in early stages, a vanguard and assult/basic vanguards with a tooled up assult SGT for varitey and options.

Oh god that is one heck of a force there! My army feels small compared to that lol must try getting full army pictures as this looks really good!

Never end up using more than a few units though but I can cover quite a few options and have have some fun creating different versions.

Its a good force, kind of supriises me in a way :-)
