Never openly display a surplus of arms in any danger situation. No matter how many guns you carry, a single bullet can and most likely will kill you. By showing off your impressive armory, you make yourself a more profitable target to looters.

Well, that depends. In some cases the deterrent factor of being openly armed might outweigh the chance of someone else trying to take what you've got. It's not always the best course of action, but I wouldn't go so far as to say to never do it.

I have a friend who is a cop, an ex military friend, and I'm from redneck country NY originally. Guns aren't an issue-I know people. But right now I have a heavy axe in easy reach. I've already extended my needs and should have toys in a decent amount of time.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Of all the new zombie movie/show tropes, I've always thought that one is the stupidest. It's just a way for them to make guns all but unusable for their little movie, to increase the amount of hand to hand with cricket bats and golf clubs. Anyone who's ever heard a gun fired outside knows that unless you're in the immediate vicinity, it's pretty difficult to locate the shooter by sound alone, and this difficulty only increases as distance from the shooter increases. This thing where someone fires a gun somewhere in a city and zombies come running from every direction is incredibly unrealistic. Even if they could locate the shooter via sound sound, at that distance by the time the zombies arrived the shooter would be long gone.

In my experience (gained from hunting), a single gunshot can be difficult to locate. But if it's closely followed by a second shot, you tend to get a pretty good sense of the direction. Add more shooting and it's fairly easy to make a beeline for it, as long as we're not talking about extreme ranges.

My experience is obviously in the wilderness and not in the city.

You know, "zombie apocalypse" is a really misleading phrase at least when it is used so freely as we hear nowadays. It tends to imply that zombies are the cause. Let me tell you guys, in a "zombie apocalypse" type situation, the zombies are just a symptom. The apocalypse part is going on long time before the zombies show up.

you know most crowbars weigh a lot more than most swords right?

my hand and a half weights about 4 lbs (which is on the heavier side of said weapons)

That's true, if there's continuous shooting you can move in the general direction. But it seems like in a lot of these newer zombie movies, a character will fire a few shots (usually to take out one or two zombies) and then every zombie for miles comes running to their exact spot. I can say with a pretty high degree of certainty that that wouldn't actually happen in real life.

An 18" crowbar weighs like 2 lbs at most. My framing hammer is little over a pound.

I have a decent sword, but it wouldn't be my goto weapon in a zompocalypse. Slashing and stabbing are not particularly effective against an enemy without a functional circulatory system. I'd use my handy little hatchet or a nice ball peen hammer (the noblest of all hammers).

Or maybe put together one of these numbers...

Considering the attitudes most people have regarding "zombie apocalypse" scenarios, continuous shooting rather than run and gun will be fairly common in the early days, especially if people rush for the same resources all at once.

My go-to is at the moment is a hand mattock. Pretty light, but sharp enough and with a good enough punch to do enough damage.

What do you mean? People trying to defend in place rather than trying to escape?

That(most people I know actually have a certain place close to where they live where they'd try to hold out) and the inevitable rush for guns and other resources before they try to escape.

My in-laws actually have a fairly isolated distribution center picked out to head to and thanks to the Commissary, they and we are fairly well stocked on non-perishables for such a trip.

Not to burst anyones bubble but the US military will have it all sorted out before you put on your favorite zombie fighting outfit and get out the door lol.

That being said I'd finally get to see what a .50 cal and a ridiculous amount of demo can achieve.

The US military is going to be able to protect everybody in every small town, big city, suburb and rural area in America? Okay. Good luck with that plan.

It's not that they'll be overrun, it's more that they can't cover all the ground in the US all at once.
