I'm not sure why standing behind a soft-skinned police cruiser has any importance whatsoever. Unless he's taking cover behind the engine block, any firearm that a criminal might have would walk right through the cruiser.

I've taking cover a few times behind Hadji cars when 7.62 and RPG comes down a street. Like I said before. He let his fear overcome his judgement

By no means am I justifying this idiot actions but his serious lack of situational awareness is piss poor..

That would be more concealment than cover, I'm thinking. Minus the engine block, 7.62 and RPGs would blow through a soft-skinned vehicle, but I don't need to tell you that.

I don't any civilian vehicle provides any reasonable cover besides the engine to any remotely modern bullets.

What cover they actually provide is preventing the shooter from knowing exactly where you are.

When you think about what a car is actually made of. You realize there's nothing between the bullet and you besides 2 very thin layers of aluminum and/or glass that is designed to shatter. Maybe some foam insulation and little metal springs.

You could probably shoot an arrow through a car door with a compound bow or crossbow.

I recall a few years back a lady got injured by a target arrow that got shot through her windshield by some drunk guy. Just a target arrow on a bow with only 20 pounds of pull.

A hunting bow or crossbow arrow/bolt will go right through a wild pig like its tin foil, and they're a lot harder than cars I can assure you.

Yeah, I'd always heard to duck behind the engine or the wheels if you need to take cover.

Rifle vs. engine block and trunk area.

Rifles vs. car door.

The moral of the story is basically, stay the hell out of cars when bullets are flying. On the other hand, car doors *can* provide a shade of life-saving, if unreliable protection. I've also heard more than one story of guys who were hit through doors by rifle rounds, and were saved by their soft armor which, without the intervening cover, would not have stopped the round.

Yeah, this is what I was asking about. I know that in theory cars provide like, zero protection, but was curious how it actually went in the field.

Well they also provide concealment too, which can be even more important.

That said, guys will get behind things that make zero sense. I've seen guys drop behind some really pathetic rocks as if it was going to help them at all.

I've heard it said that what separates dead men from living men in a firefight is who picks appropriate cover

He who laughs last wins

Cover is cover and one takes cover with what's available. Granted (AK47's and a few AK74 thrown) the body of the car might not stop the round itself but it'll slow it down and I am also fully aware I am wearing body armor. If that groin protector can stop a 7.62 round that ricochet off pavement (mind you your crotch a damn Dutch Oven wearing that piece of protective gear) then I have good faith it'll stop a round. Figure in under a minute you would move from behind that vehicle into a door well, wall, MRAP, MATV, whatever heavy piece of object that separates you from meeting Mr. Death
