Lets keep this debate civil

If you have a child, and your friend comes up to your child and threatens to shank him/her if he/she misbehaves, you would be pissed off at him/her right?

In turn, if an old man in a robe tells your child that if he/she does not follow the scriptures of their religion, they will be tortured and burned for all eternity and that the only way to avoid such a fate is to have faith and to follow all the rules would you be okay with that?

That's not what my religion teaches, so no. My religion is not fear mongering.

Of course not all religions teach that, but many of the largest religions do

Various denominations may teach different aspects of the scripture, but the base scripture says what it says

The title of your thread seems to give a blanket statement, though, so I figured I'd answer for my religion.

Depends what you mean. Absolutely any religion can be used for fear mongering, but that usually varies on a person/regional basis. Islam and Christianity can both be fear mongering religions, but that really delves more with the individuals than the religion itself.

The thing is is that those religions you mention is somewhat innately fear mongering as the the fire and brimstone is in the main text itself though it may be up to interpretation(lets not forget the million different translations and revisions over the years)

Too close to Jersey.

If an old man in a robe approaches my children, my first concern is that the guy is a lunatic pedophile. Doesn't matter what gibberish he may be spouting.

All sorted.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all

Yes. Quite.

We Christians would say it's equivalent to parents using fear to keep their children from playing in the street.

fyi it's often best to come out and state what you'd like to talk about rather than tap dance in circles before roosting on the actual point you want to make.

Your title and/or OP should have gone something along the lines of "Do Christianity/Islam survive off of/perpetuate the act of fear-mongering?"

Honesty is worth a lot, if for nothing more than helping people decide if they want to be a part of the conversation.
