This is very much a rumour rather than a piece of news, but if you have ever purchased any of the print and build terrain from WorldWorksGames such as their TLX or SwiftScenics range, you should probably log in to the website and make sure you have everything downloaded by the end of the month.

Due to the lack of new releases, I haven't visited the site much but by luck I swung by the forum yesterday and some of the community members were discussing the fact that the domain name is going to expire on November 4th, 2014. Considering the lack of activity from Denny and the gang over the last year, I think there is a reasonable chance that he will simply let the domain lapse and with it, the forum and access to your purchases could disappear, especially if the server is provided as part of a hosted service along with the domain name. By November 5th, it could all be gone. Of course, WWG might still be making enough money to cover the server costs and Denny might yet renew.. but it seems wise to take preventative measures now, if you can.

I know that TheAuldGrump was part of that community a lot longer than I was, so perhaps if he knows more about the situation, he might chime in with some actual details.

Edit: Their products are no longer listed on DriveThuRPG / RPGNow although you can still download them via your account page if you already purchased them there.

Thanks for the heads up. I like their terrain and will be sure to download my purchases again, although I think I have them somewhere

Well, that sucks. I've been aware of them for years, although, admittedly, i never got around to buying anything. Hopefully one of the other terrain companies will buy it up so this stuff won't be lost forever.
Battle Systems did an amazing job with their card terrain, maybe they could pick up some of this and modify it for the same treatment?

Gods above and below, I hope that it doesn't come down to Denny and Co. shuttering the place.

I have had a lot of fun with World Works terrain over the years, and the fact that they have been so silent over there is just not good.

The reason I bought rules and became a real wargamer was because I wanted a properly thought out structure to govern the action instead of just making things up as I went along.

Yeah.. back before Terraclips (also, basically, dead) and the Sci-Fi BattleSystems kickstarter, WWG and Battle Systems were very much competing in the same arena. Battle Systems have always been more innovative with the things you can actually build out of card (particularly with their two recent kickstarters) but I always preferred WWG's art style with it's more vibrant palette.. a Quake 2 to Battle System's Quake 1, if you will

So with their history I'm not sure if a sale of WWG's assets to Battle Systems will ever happen but I do hope that someone steps in to keep the show running.

From the WWG forum - posted yesterday:

Hey all,

Many of you have been asking for an update regarding WWG's future. And you have been rightly frustrated by the lack of communication.

I suppose the best way to start is to frame the papercraft terrain industry in general. We built an amazing variety of innovative products over the past 10 years and by and large it was done for the love of the craft and for a community of enthusiastic collectors. As a collection, our catalog did well in those early years but as competition increased, prices were driven down, file sharing became more pervasive, and the D&D market began its slump, the market became increasingly challenging. This has always been an extremely niche industry with a number of barriers to entry. As a papercraft terrain designer, you are in a rare position indeed if you can make a full-time go out of the market and frequent releases are key. WWG represented a collective of designers, working in part-time and bit-work capacities to move the medium forward.

When we were given the opportunity to work on TerraClips with Wyrd Minatures, it was seen as a terrific potential way to broaden our reach into a tangible market. WWG invested a solid year in developing that product line, engineering it and designing everything from the components themselves to the art, the packaging and the branding. We made a strong push with 5 products in the line and it was sent to stores globally. Unfortunately, for many reasons, the product did not find its audience and WWG's efforts were largely wasted. This had a significant impact on WWG in general and our ability to move forward with papercraft terrain.

In late 2012 myself and others here, diverted into videogame development. Having a young family I made a tough call to put my focus in an industry that had a stronger foundation. That eventually led to the creation of Cloudhead Games LTD in late 2012 and a (at the time) crazy notion to begin development on a game "made for virtual reality", for prototype hardware. The simple truth is that we had no idea just how involved and crazy things would get at Cloudhead Games. Eventually working and consulting with Sony, Valve, Oculus and others, we found ourselves on the front step of a completely new, emergent industry. What we didn't account for was the time and energy this transition would incur and how that would impact our collective presence here at WWG. It has been a rollercoaster ride of epic proportions.

Bringing us to now, the question of whether or not to sell WWG has come up a number of times during the past year. And while we remain open to that possibility, handing over the keys isn't something we're taking lightly. That potential move requires the right ideals, the right partner and probably most importantly the right timing. To that end, we're currently evaluating a shift in management to hold down the fort while we responsibly consider the future and fate of WWG. We require the window this will create for reflection and without feeling pressured to simply offload the company due to our challenged schedule. In an ideal scenario we will find a path that reboots production and continues to support the community.

We appreciate that there is a longstanding and devoted community here and we have no intentions of slamming the doors shut without significant warning. We would like to see WWG move forward in some format and with its community intact. We will not move through that transition without letting this community know exactly how things are to play out.

~ Denny

Helps clarify things - I like the terraclips stuff (WWG for the lazy!) and would liked to have seen more to combine sets. I'd better get a few more set for Malifaux.

Thanks for the thread. I only bought a Terraclips set recently (and haven't even put it together!) and the art is fantastic. But I agree that the market is too small -- the Call of Cthulhu RPG even lost its creator, Sandy Petersen, to the DOOM and QUAKE video game market. I hope WWG at least *licenses* its art to another partner and its die-cut and papercraft terrain reappears on the market. Sorry to hear Terraclips didn't work out.

Shame really. I agree with the other posters in here that the Terraclips stuff is great - I got several sets for Carnivale and I like them.

I don't know what the terms of the partnership were between WWG and Wyrd but whatever happened cost Terraclips it's momentum. At the very least we could have seen a Terraclips version of Titan for Infinity and a version of the Mayhem line for Pulp City.. and I think such sets could have really improved on the clip design and possible layouts we saw in the original "..of Malifaux" range. However with two highly successfully kickstarters under their belt, I think it's fair to say that the Battle Systems guys are too far ahead to consider playing catchup :(

Still, it's good to know that WWG has not been totally abandoned. Thanks for posting that update here, 02Laney!

What did happen with Terraclips? I remember it making a relatively big news splash and then there being some sort of delay but the details for me are muddy. I was initially interested but I kept hoping they'd come out with some scifi sets as I have no interest in victorian/steampunk/horror gaming like Malifaux personally.

Nothing has really been confirmed but if you read between the lines, it would seem to suggest that it was going to be the next big product line for them but the delays (on Wyrd's side?) in the early production and getting re-stocks out to distributors probably impacted them financially and I wonder if there was some contract thing that prevented them from producing any Terraclips sets that were not related to Malifaux.. or perhaps they were dependent on Wyrd's manufacturing contracts to produce the plastic clips and printed material and when the sales for Terraclips weren't super awesome, maybe Wyrd just lost interest?

Really, who knows. But I do agree that it's a shame that things didn't work out better for WWG
