Why people never use grenade? I have never seen people on Youtube using grenades as shooting attacks in Warhammer 40k batrep. I have also never seen anyone apart from myself use Grenades except Psyk-out and Krak. I have seen an Eldar player shooting Dire Avengers at point blank range against a group of Necron warriors who just disembarked from a Night Scythe. The Plasma Grenade would have been used there, not only would it potentially hit more models, but the AP4 will ignore armor of those Warriors. Why do people keep forgetting grenades in Shooting Phase? Anyone here who has been throwing Plasma Grenades or Frag Grenades at your opponent?

Because grenades have been CC only for so darn long, people got out of the habit of using them. At least that's why I never throw them. Too bad, they're pretty cool.

Well, in case of DAs I prefer 2 shuriken catapult shots with bladestorm in many cases. Against good players they will make sure that your small blast marker rarely helps. If I see things huddled together I might use a grenade.

If I remember and it's worth it against the target, I'll generally chuck one in. If I can hit 3 or more guys with a frag (especially if they are T3) I'll hit them with a Frag, if they have a 4+ save or T5+ I throw a Krak if I have them.
I've got into the habit of posing one guy in most of my SM squads with the grenade hand, just to remind me and to make it clear where the grenade attack is coming from.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought you could not throw Krak grenades. Aren't they only used in CC?

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

You're thinking of Meltabombs, which can only be used in CC and are S8 AP2 Unwieldy, I think. Kraks can be thrown like Frags with a profile of S6 AP4 at 8".

I knew Meltabombs were assault only. I don't play armies with Krak grenades, and the people I do play against who has them never throw them. As such I thought they were also CC only.

well in the case of frag grenades, maybe because throwing a single S3 AP- small blast against T4 MEQ opponents is a waste of time and just slows the game. Even against orks I'd prefer a rapid firing bolter to that nade.
Unless I am wrong, in 6th edition frag grenades used to be S4 AP-

I'm glad I'm not the only one
Also, defensive grenades can now be thrown in shooting phases, unlike in 6th. The attack doesn't do damage but can blind. They unfortunately lost their cool < 8" stealth.

On Eldar units it's usually because the popular units that carry plasma grenades don't really want to be in assault. I don't know if I've ever seen Dire Avengers within 8" of something in a competitive environment.
I'm a little different and I run my Dire Avengers with a shimmer shield exarch (points permitting) so he'll usually huck a plasma grenade if I get too close to a unit and then they'll battle focus outta there.

On units that have grenades, the grenade is usually superior to the base weapon.
Really, it wasn't a rule for such a long time, and is still situational even now, so a lot of people forget.

Still one attack at 8" range. Situational but not a lynchpin. Automatically Appended Next Post: casvalremdeikun wrote:A couple of frak grenades chucked at the side of a Leman Russ saved my butt in a game recently. If you need a little added firepower, they are the way to go.
Only one grenade per unit.

If I'm shooting at a Hive Tyrant with a squad that has a pair of plasma guns and a Heavy Bolter, yeah one of the Bolter marines is going to throw a grenade. Or Melta against a tank, one of the normals is chucking a grenade. But other than that, it's just not normally worth it. I'd rather add two normal shots with decent AP against little guys than a frag grenade. And then Blind Grenades and these other weird friggin things, I don't even bother keeping track.

No, not a lynchpin, but better than most default weapons. While it's not going to make a huge difference in one shooting attack, over the course of a game that tiny advantage adds up. Krak grenades especially open up the ability to ID GEQ units, as well as a hail mary play against vehicles where before you could only try to run and pray to get into rear armor.

Frag grenades suck (S3 AP- really? I would be better off spitting) and were better when your whole unit could throw them at once (back in 2nd? Or was I just playing it wrong?)
Krak grenades are still cool though, nothing better than snap firing a krak at a flyer that has got too close because he thinks all you got are bolters, hahaha...
Haywire grenades - love these on Tau, but generally if you are close enough to throw these then you have already lost the unit next turn
But in general there used to be way more variety in grenade types available - anyone remember the variety in 1st? RAD / Vortex / Anti Plant / Hallucingen / Stasis / Tanglefoot / Virus - and even then you could turn any of them into mines. Ahhh, good times.

Huh, well I guess we screwed that one up at the table. You can still chuck one per phase per unit, though. The LR got blown up by a Melta Bomb anyway.

Probably because in most cases its best to use your normal ranged weapon.
Its also only one grenade per unit. If you could toss multiple frags you'd see them used all the time. 10 marines tossing 10 frag grenade blasts would be amazing. One dude tossing a frag is underwhelming.
I'll occasionally toss a krak at a vehicle because I can't hurt it with my bolters, but thats only if I remember. One str6 hit usually won't make a difference.
lets do the maths for a frag vs a bolter.
Bolter in rapid fire range.
2(2/3)(.5)=.667 wounds
Assuming a small blast typically hits 2 models
2(1/3)=.667 wounds
Same number of wounds caused, but the bolter wounds are AP5.
The frag has the possibility of more hits, but unless you've got a massive clump of guys the bolter is going to be superior. If you do have a big cluster of dudes, frag em all day long!
