Subject: Hail Caesar Britons or Dacians?

I am getting the Hail Caesar rulebook and I'm having trouble deciding my first army. The Britons or Dacians. My main tactics would be to probably have a large frontal assault, and some horses to flank. I love the falx men, cataphracts, and scorpios; but I love the chariots, fanatics, and mastiffs. Any tactics tips would be great! Thanks in advance.

Personally I thought the Britons book was a little better written - although I may be biased as, being a Brit, it was a bit more interesting personally/easier to relate to if you've ever been out in a major city on a Friday/Saturday night.

Yeah I'm kinda leaning towards the Brits (I'm Irish) and it seems they have a lot more personality (naked men).

Ancient Britonas have never been a boring army. I dont play Hail Caesar but if the rules has any connexion to previous army lists in other games you ought to have fun.
No Idea if this is relevant to the rules you are using, but under the old WRG ruleset (decades before there were any other mainstream rulesets) Ancient Britons were a popular win big /lose big army based on how many chariots you took ansd your timing. Take too many chariots and you lose. Take just enough to break up enemy formations for your horde infantry and you have a good shot at domination.
This held true for Warhammer Ancients, I have yet to learn if it holds true for Hail Caesar.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

I say Dacians with their falxmen and cataphracts are awesome.

Hail Caesar is enough of a tool kit you should be able to get by without the expansions, but may want them for more support and ideas.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better. |

I had WRG 5th, 6th and 7th editions, but I haven't played a game for 20+ years. Great times! Based on historical performance both the Dacians and the ancient British gave the Romans a pretty hard time. I would say the British army has more charisma but I have always liked Biblical type armies (chariots and so on.) I am refurbishing my Old Kingdom Egyptians ATM (chariots are a distant dream for them!) Now that I think of it, I have the rulebooks and army lists for all those games, and DBA and DBM too.

I would have to say Dacians, from a historical standpoint they give you the option of mixing Dacian falxmen and foot nobles with the horse archers and cataphracts of their mounted Samaritan Allies. In terms of modeling, I just finished painting and basing my first warband of warlord games Dacians and I already have four warbands of ancient Briton foot. If you plan to use warlord all of the plastic sprues are identical and you just get a collection of different metal heads, shields and torsos (depending upon which kits you buy) so there isn't a huge difference in assembly. The dacians do have more torsos with flax, if you are into big recurve choppy things though.
