Well, a lot of Dakka users have left their 20s, so have gone through the 90s fully aware of their surroundings and the 90s culture...and you could not get past the Backstreet Boys. And - well, let's face it. They made good music. Same as Nickelback imo. It's not deep, far from it, but it had catchy tunes, was well-written and could be enjoyed without paying too much attention to the music on its own. Just like Nickelback. When you're out on a joyride on a sunny afternoon, we just put it some Nickelback and enjoy the ride.

Yeah I'm pretty surprised to see so many Backstreet fans, makes me feel a bit less ashamed of my choices. (For the record, I totally liked Backstreet as a young kid, up til I started to develop my own musical tastes around the new millenium)

My all-time favourite band is... P.O.D. for a number of factors. I acknowledge that they put out their fair share of crap, but when they get it right, I really like their output. I also like them so much because of some heavy nostalgia. I had been stuck in a bubble for over a decade, listening to my parent's music, when I went to a week-long camp and the counselor was listening to Satellite all week. The songs basically got drilled into my head... I loved it. They were very different that what I had listened to the rest of my life up to that point. Hell, they were relevant at the time too and easily one of the best nu-metal bands, period. If nothing else, they introduced me to hard rock and metal music and coloured my tastes. I just wish they hadn't fallen off the map so badly after their self-titled album, because I feel like people will judge me for liking them so much.

Onto a band I actually feel ashamed to like: Evanescence. I don't even like them that much, apart from Fallen, but their music just screams "angsty teenager music". I feel like I have to turn it off whenever someone comes by to avoid any potential embarrassment.

Also... what's with all the people ashamed of Rammestien? I was under the impression it was totally cool to like them?

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

I can outshame you all. While I don't in my feeble defence add this artist to a list of those I like, and havent for a long time. I did however like it long enough to actually buy this album.

The CD has long been missing, and I never bothered to look for it. However I was back in '87 twisted enough to be able to rickroll myself whenever I pleased.

I plea for mercy.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

I remember when Nickelback's second album came out. It actually wasn't too bad. Couldn't get into anything else they did after that. All of the other bands you mention are things I have avoided as much as possible.

Also... what's with all the people ashamed of Rammestien? I was under the impression it was totally cool to like them?

That's not a word that I would have used to describe them. They kind of always struck me as poseurs trying a little too hard.

I always got the vibe that it was "cool" to like Rammstein for much the same reason as German teens of the same age (having talked to an exchange student from Germany during this same time period) liked Eminem:

They sad "bad words" in foreign languages, and our parents were none the wiser.

Maybe. Might explain why I never felt the need to listen to them. My dad liked fouler music.

To contrast Ramsteim, my angsty teenager self always enjoyed KMFDM.

Lol, I honestly used to like Rammstein because of the pictures I saw from their live shows, not because of the content of the music itself..... As I went through school, and later the military, I basically "grew out" of liking them, as I now prefer heavier music in general

What's wrong with Huey Lewis? I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square". A song so catchy, most people probably don't even listen to the lyrics!

Maybe the problem is that I don't feel guilty about most of my guilty pleasures. If I had to pick one though, mine is Angels and Airwaves. ...yeah.

But they should.

Does it count if it's stuff that everyone likes but pretends not to?

Funny how no one ever admits to liking Gangnam Style, yet it managed to get 2 billion views and become the most liked video on youtube. And people always seem able to pull out the dance with practiced ease when intoxicated -- I think everyone's lying.

Well I should rephase: I didn't mean "cool" as in "you're cool if you like Rammestien", I meant it more like "if you admit to liking Rammestien, you won't get mocked".

I don't like Rammstein as a band...what I like about them is that they are overtly homoerotic, and yet were the #1 band of dudebros for many, many years.

However, my musical guilty pleasure/band of shame is, and has been for like 25 years now, Jimmy Buffet.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.
