So I just wanted to start a thread about everyone's perceptions/thought on how Infinity is growing and perhaps visible signs more players are picking it up in your areas.

One piece of news I noted recently, and this isn't necessarily because of Infinity, but the Miniature Market has discontinued selling all GW products. I find this interesting as it shows that the Table Top sellers market is viable outside of GW products now, guess there is decent money to be had selling PP, CB, and FF stuff now.

Undoubtedly, Icestorm has done wonders for the game's popularity. I can't really speak for real life, but online there seem to be a ton of folks getting into the game with O:I, myself included. They are also getting more and more front-page coverage on the likes of Wayland Games/Darksphere/Element Games, which must boost their profile somewhat.

Don't forget the more consistent sculpt quality, and (hopefully) better rules writing and translation.

Nah, it isn't just your part of Southern California, it's pretty much all of Southern California. The only place in Southern California I've seen that even carries Infinity is Brookhurst Hobbies. Even then, they keep very little stock and I haven't seen any games being played there. I wish more stores in the area would carry it so I don't have to order everything.

The most visible part I've seen is the attitude of the online community changing. Just 2 years ago when I started, the community was still friendly and helpful to new players, and very welcoming.

Over the last 2 years as its grown, the official boards in particular have turned into a toxic cesspool. While the News threads were always a bit... special, the faction subforums were always very good.

It's sad to see it happen, but at least the modeling areas of those boards are still very good. It's why I've mostly wound up sticking to Dakka for Infinity discussion, as Alph tends to keep it civil here. I just wish the place was more active.

Well, the scene in Houston is certainly picking up. Not a ton of players yet. But new people are joining the ranks, stores are ordering items to keep in stock, and we are having a large Dire States Tourney at a Brewery in January

We are a very large metropolis, with multiple stores to cover it. Our WarCor has done a good job of selling the game, and we're hoping to draw more people in with showcase days.

I hear the community in my area (Greater D.C. Metro) has quite a few gamers, Red Harvest can give more accurate info since he attended the Dire States Baltimore.

Inland Empire. Pegasus Hobbies is my main FLGS, and so far, they refuse to carry Infinity for some reason.

33 gamers overall at the tourney, 1 from Texas, a few from N. Carolina, a few from New York, a few from Georgia, but the bulk from the greater Baltimore and DC Metro areas as one would expect. There are many more who were not there too. Some have gone on hiatus as far as I can tell and others just don't much want to play ITS stuff-- can't blame them. There are plenty of regular Infinity players hereabouts, most play at Games n Stuff or Dropzone Commander. There are small groups at Victory comics in Va, and maybe a group at Huzzah Hobbies in Leesburg, and a small group at Dream Wizards in Rockville, Md, and those like me who play among friends in our homes. I expect the number of players to increase with N3, since it looks like N3 will avoid the usual 3rd ed curse of games., and Icestorm is doing exactly what it should do. I hope it few brings a few people out of hiatus too.

There is a sense of growth, if for no other reason than there are more people participating in Infinity threads and forums than there were when I started in Summer 2012.

SoCal

For other people in SoCal, Comic Quest in Lake Forest carries a large stock.

However, the game is mainly in a lull due to it nearing the end of an edition, and to be frank, my store that actually had OI on preorder never got theirs from the distributor. So distribution and stock is a big issue.

There's also a lot of bad older sculpts floating out there. The combination of poorly written and translated rules early on, along with some bad sculpts, and lack of players both able to parse through that while also willing to buy/make usable terrain and demo the game, it spelled death here in SoCal.

And a lot of SoCal used to be heavy GW, with very little terrain that worked with Infinity. That's opened up a lot with more people playing other games.

Anyway, I may get a group started up on Thursdays at The Realm in Brea, but that's only because I picked up a bunch of scifi urban terrain for use with my own game I'm making, and loved the look of some of the new infinity models.

Around my area Infinity literally exploded, just couple months ago there was 4-5 players at my local club, now we have around 20-ish and still there are people turning up for intro games.

Part of the growth of Infinity is the better sculpts, the OI box set and the slow exodus from 40k that is happening in some areas.
It's a great game with fantastic minis and fantastic rules and people are starting to see that.

No one in my area really plays yet. Their are a few who want too and the local store wants to stock it more but they don't want to start getting into it now with a new rule book coming out in December. Sadly I will likely be moving before it takes off here in any meaningful way.

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

I think the clincher is the release of the new rules. There is a little bit of a hiatus now, from the people who picked up O:I and are now looking to expand to the full rules and game.

But, definitely the online forum numbers, blogs and coverage has increased so much in the past few years, it will be interesting if it continues to pick up momentum. I think in terms of the hard work and talent involved with the people making this game, if it does make it big-time then it would certainly be well deserved.

I agree, its a real problem for new players and being forced to wait instead of diving in to this game may pi*s off some of them.

We have a growth in my local Meta.
And good support from our FLGS with painting comps. Gaming tables. Terrain storage. Because lets face it. Terrain seems to be one of the biggest obstacles to overcome, the sheer quantity needed for a good game.
In that regard Malifaux is similar from what I've heard.
Personally I think a lot of it comes down to what the gaming store employees play themselves.
But it has been nice to see the Infinity selection increase from a handful of starters available to two shelves.
And with the painting comp being held there should be some nicely painted sfactions and sectorials on display.
I'll be putting my Nomads and maybe my Aleph up for display. If my Pan-O gets doen as well its a bonus..
But its little things like this that grows a community.

I may be an donkey-cave, but at least I'm an equal oppurtunity donkey-cave...

I don't know what you guys are talking about in regards to Southern California.

At Ease Games in San Diego carries literally the whole Infinity line, and has a regular league with a lot of players. And amazing terrain, and the best single game space I've ever seen.

Comic Quest has some stuff, i didn't live in that area.

I think it's growing too fast and they're focusing too much on extraneous products/partners when they need to actually fill gaps in their range in addition to bringing all of their sculpts up to the quality of today.

Remember that episode of Seinfeld where Kramer started working at an office? He hands in his 'report' and the boss says, "It's as if you have no business training whatsoever." Then the boss says firing him, Kramer, is difficult, because he isn't actually an employee. Funny stuff. Shame the series ended so badly.

Sometimes I wonder which of the people who comment on Infinity have actually played a game of Infinity. <Shrug> But not often. I generally have better things to do...

Ah NM, Magno and Crushar, but I have not heard from Crushar in a while. I hope he is well.

N3 is supposed to be out on the 8th, but I do not think we will see the full impact until after the New Year, when the rules become available for download. A lot of looky Lou's. Be ready to offer demo games. We will see an influx of people here and on the official forums. Amount unknown. Adepticon will be the first large tournament with Infinity after the N3 rules hit. It will be interesting to see how N3 affects attendance. And the regional Dire States tourneys-- one in Orlando now, with the Warsenal folks behind it.

Just to clarify, Corvus Belli is starting to ship their preorders on the 8th of December.

Whether or not other retailers/distributors will have their copies to ship by then has been roundly ignored.

Here in the wonderful Colorado, USA, Infinity still seems to be fairly small of a community. But it certainly is growing, there is a little shop in Aurora called Adventurer's Quarter that has weekly Infinity events and a very enthusiastic tight knit group. Over the past few months especially it seems I'm meeting new players almost every week, it's awesome.
I just wish some other stores would start taking notice of how awesome Infinity is and support the line.
I think part of the reason CB is doing so well is simply how affordable it is to get into compared to other games. People becoming disenchanted with GW hear that you can play fairly competitively with about $150, and at least for me, this was a big draw.
Now I just need to stop buying every God Damned figure in the line and maybe I'd save some money from switching games...

This hobby is fething my wallet... But I love it.

Yes the dates listed on retailer sites have been pretty mixed here in the UK, although both Wayland and Element Games have 8th Dec. There is absolutely no mention of 3rd edition now on the Dark Sphere website, which is rather odd. I've gone for a 'courier' order, fingers crossed I will be able to do some reading of it over Xmas and then fall asleep while watching seasonal re-runs on TV...

I slightly have the inside scoop as to why this is so. Yes the market is more than viable outside of GW because of companies like Corvus Belli, Battlefront and Privateer Press that are really putting out solid games with beautiful minis and books (with or without fluff in Battlefront's case). But also the evolution of games in general from tabletop to boardgames to cards. LCG are really becoming popular and Magic the Gathering isn't going anyway anytime soon. They also have the low buy-in value to their games, not just on a competitive front, but on "gaming in general" front as well. Heroclix, Star Wars X-wing

But mostly from what I understand is the MM doesn't need them at all. GW was such a small part of what they are making profit wise it wasn't worth it anymore. They are also extremely difficult to deal with distribution wise from what I understand. This should be a MAJOR[u] sign to GW, but I'm sure they will go their merry way living in their own little universe that nothings wrong....Doesn't look like that way to me with their loss in stocks, loss in courts and re-aligning of their board (good luck with that).

I'm sure it's been said 1000 times on these boards, but GW has really shot themselves in the foot.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I'd also like to say that I've been following Infinity since 2nd edition release and I have to say that's really exciting now with the 3rd edition. I've built so many armies with their army builder program and bought their books, but never once did I buy the minis...That's about to change. I've also witness the Infinity Tournament scene and I like the way it is structured. The past couple Adepticons in the US have convinced my that this is going to get bigger and bigger here in the states. War Machine look out!

It can still all go wrong though.

They might make the same mistake of poor translation, or micro managing the translator again.

Other decisions we've seen are just as bad as any GW makes, no matter what excuses fans throw up, like screwing over people who paid for their expensive miniatures, just because they were unpopular and poorly designed.

Other stubborn decisions, like keeping or not changing some pet rule that the designer can't give up, or not consolidating books.

Basically all the reasons why I never go into Infinity during the 1st and 2nd editions.

So it's not all sunshine and roses. But, I am excited to see if they get it right overall.

Thankfully, my buy in is minimal if the worst happens, I just traded a box of miniatures I'd never use again for two full Infinity armies.

Infinity is a wonderfully complex and different game that needs to stick around in the miniature gaming landscape. Especially if we're to see the miniature gaming hobby expand and grow. Especially now in the aftermath of GW implosion, people need more smaller games to play. Which in turn means more income to stores and other play spaces, as well as club participation.

Not consolidating books and discontinuing miniatures are pretty much the only issues I have.

Poor translation is really overblown - it's simply due to the style they wrote the rules, which was very conversational. Once you got through a few games it's easy enough to follow. It's also something we've seen that they're fixing. The recent sharts they've released for hacking shows they're consolidating walls of text into easy to follow charts and such, which is a massive improvement. Not sure what pet rules there are in the system. There's some fluffy and flavour rules, but they never feel badly balanced.

Dropping the Exrah is a sore point, but mostly because of the manner it was done. Just dropping an SKU update list with the note that anything on a specific list will not get rules in 3rd edition and is having production stopped, then doing nothing at all to communicate with the community. It was just so un-CB like. Communication is what they try to do well. it's like they knew it would be taken badly and shut down all communication after dropping the SKU list.

The other, consolidating rulebooks. It gets tedious flipping through multiple books, and printing out the PDF's and trying to organise them in a way that makes sense isn't really a solution. Even with the PDFs, having no consolidated weapon listing, or unit listings by faction, is just sloppy. And it's not something they're fixing, since we've been told N3 won't include link team rules nor anything else from Human Sphere and Paradiso.

But even after that, I still get the feeling they like their community, and do their best to keep them informed and deliver a product worth delivering. And for that, they keep me as a customer.
