Only GW could screw up making a mug. Rather than branding it with their beloved IPs they waste the name of their hobby line and insult hobbyists with a water pot tin box combo. Guess they really want Citadel to be a true brand name instead of people wondering why "Games WorkShop Paints" have Citadel on them. Just another step towards their exclusive line of high priced collectibles dream.

There was a time when the freebies GW gave us were things we could actually use. A free box is practically an insult.
Oh no! The box your stuff gets delivered in is Warhammer-themed! I feel so insulted!
The insult is not that they're giving a free box, the insult is that they present this free box as a "promotion" of the "get it while supplies last!" variety.
I don't think it's worth getting upset over at all (I buy all my stuff second-hand anyway), but I can see how it would come as patronizing, you know? The box itself is totally harmless, it's just how it's presented to us, that's all.
It's not like you're being offered a free teabag if you buy 5 of them, either.
ah, but you've put that out on the interwebs, its only a matter of time now
I fully expect a Cease & Desist through the post in the next few days.
I wonder if it'll come in a themed envelope.

if your buying yourself christmas gifts then a free box is not your only problem. It is there way of trying to say send this to a loved one and you do not need to ship to yourself and wrap it, order it and ship and your done.

Except it will only contain the stuff they can fit in the box. Everything else will be sent in standard packaging.

I can't think of a worse design for the mug/pot. I'd have totally bought one if it has something that wasn't awful on it (even an Imperium or Ork logo or something), and thrown the bits box in the bin.

Are you kidding? Did you see what we did with the last shipment of Tea that came from the UK?

So you used a bit too much water, it's no big deal. Next time try and dial down the amount; even a shipment of tea doesn't need an entire harbour to prepare. It's also best if you boil the water first; harbours aren't exactly the best temperature for tea-making.

It's slightly more involved than that.
Do GW get these special boxes printed for nothing? I'm pretty sure they don't do any in-house printing at all, so that's not only the cost of production but someone else's profit on top.
Where do you think that cash is coming from?
Therefore, they are spending money they're not especially blessed with at the moment, on crap that nobody asked for but will have paid for in part if they'd made any sort of purchase from them recently, that offers no use.
Then we can move on to the fact that it is a stupid idea and unlikely to incentivise anyone, when they could have perhaps produced an exclusive mini, which given they own the whole design and production process most likely wouldn't have been hugely more expensive than buying daft boxes from a packing company and would have been a genuine incentive for some people (if only to sit on and sell in ebay down the line.)
It isn't that it's free or not, it's that it is a stupid idea.

It's not a free box first of all. This "free gift" costs you the difference in discounts you aren't getting because you choose to buy from GW direct. Do people still do that? Why would you not get 20% off from warstore or something similar?
So, no, this box is not free. It costs you 20% of your order.

Sure...but I have a hard time believing that most people gave it that much thought.
It's mostly just "They are trying to trick us with a box! You can't trick us with a box! Aargglebarrgle!!"
If you go in person to their stores this month, any purchase you make is also accompanied by a one-of-a-kind printed receipt.
It will detail the items you purchased and to commemorate the date and time that you participated in everyone's favorite part of the hobby (buying Citadel products).
Some customers will even get special purple striped receipts with their purchase but those are even more rare. Hurry in now before receipt paper runs out!
That there are people saying "I think it's OK" shows exactly how low the expectations of some fans have become.
I can only assume that if we ever went back to the days of "buy 2, get 1 free" with rules/box sets or offered free downloads of something their heads would actually explode.

It's because GW are making a fuss over it. What a load of fething gak, it's actually pretty funny quite how poor this is. Similar to the one click army 'deals', this deserves every bit of scorn and ridicule that it is thrown its way.
I actually wonder if its designed to fool people into thinking that they are getting some kind of free offer, because (like the OP) you probably couldn't believe that a circular would be sent out over a cardboard box with a picture printed on it.
So this box is worthy of a promotional email, but the cool little End Times-freebies* GW have been giving out lately get no mentions anywhere. Or have I just missed them?
*I got a Nurgle-themed button with my last order and a little Nagash-themed notebook with the one before that.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?
Except they're not giving it away for free, they're paying someone for it, and they're using your money to do it. Money that isn't being spent on rules development, miniature design, extra staff, suppressing prices etc, etc..
There is no such thing as a free lunch, and just because they're not charging you for it doesn't mean you're not paying for it.

If you have no plans on buying anything, well... I guess you wouldn't get anything regardless.
Which makes it a lousy incentive.
It would be nice if they just did it, with no fanfare and just let people be surprised when it arrived, which I dare say many other companies will do over the next few weeks across all sorts of sectors, but they're promoting limited edition packaging.
It just boggles every commerce orientated part of my brain.

I agree, ordering something and getting something extra with a little card and note is cool, especially if it wasn't advertised.
This "promotion" is certainly half baked, and quite lame... but at least it is something. Sort of like the exclusive marines... you had to pay a bunch to get access to the exclusives... but at least you could use those promotions during games.
I still think it is better than nothing. Which is what we would normally get.

When they would have spent cash on having the boxes printed instead of any number of other things (as relatively inconsequential amount as it may have been) I would rather it was nothing.

This. Most companies don't bother sending out promotional messages to tell potential customers that their orders will be packed into a box.
