How dare they give you an interesting box for free with a moderately large purchase!
This discussion is exactly why GW shouldn't EVER listen to the internet. When there are legitimate issues, then complain. By complaining about nonsense issues, you pretty much degrade the ability for commentary to impact practice.
As stated before, it's not "for free" when you have to purchase a certain amount. They already give you a box "for free" to ship your stuff in (only if you buy $65 or more). Plus as stated before, you're paying 20% more for the privilege of purchasing directly from them. To tout a "free" box like this is just...well, asinine.
I really don't care anyway, I'm off the GW crack. No more abuse for me, I'm clean...for Infinity!

Either I miss your irony or you really don't get it. We're not really complaining here. Complaining would mean that you hope to achieve a betterment, and we're well past this point. No one expects GW to do a *good* promotion anymore.
It's just mocking GW for trying to make you buy something in by providing a printed box instead of the usual cardboard brown. There are probably less than 10 people in the world who'd order an extra pot of paint just to get a different cardoard box.

And while an all swarm army sounds hilarious, as does an all Ratling one, that just seems stretching it when I could just play fantasy, a game I like most of the time.

Most people aren't complaining about GW, they are mocking GW.
They are mocking GW because GW thinks that switching the box that they use to dispatch orders for another box is a an actual promotion that deserves its own advertisement. This is the stuff that comedy sketches are made of! "And if you buy more than 100 GBP you'll get this cardboard box for free! But only if you order now, now, NOW, because its a limited edition cardboard box!"

Except of course that mocking is a complaint in this case. You mock because you are trying to make a commentary on what your perceive as a failed promotion.
It is a box. I called out empty, uncreative mockery as a hollow complaint. I read the thread, it wasn't exactly the most difficult thread to page through given the simple posts.
I am not even "defending" GW here. They are sending a special box if you buy a certain amount of models. How does that require mockery or even comment? It literally costs you nothing to get the box.

Is it though? Is it really? Or are you just tacking new definitions on to words where you see fit to hold on to your argument?
You mock because you are trying to make a commentary on what your perceive as a failed promotion.
Or...maybe we mock because its worthy of being mocked? A failed promotion, by its nature, should be worthy of being mocked. It failed. It failed quite laughably at that. Therefore, mocking.

If it was so simple, what part of mockery are you not understanding?

Are you not though? Or are we just making up definitions again?
Love the quotes around it too.

Because they're promoting it. If we just got the box as a nice add-on and surprise, people would be happy. Sending out newsletters advertising that spending 'X' amount gets you a box is pretty ridiculous as promotions go. Maybe other people are used to companies using normal and sane business practices, where discounts or limited things are offered.
Clearly this thread is why GW shouldn't communicate with its customers and get feedback. Can you imagine what would happen if they were to even read this?

It costs you more than buying it from any other online discounter. Since GW ALSO makes more from direct sales than they do from other channels, you'd expect a decent promotion. Its further evidence of what a garbage company it is.
This isn't even as good as the crappy "jelly of the month" club Christmas "bonus" from Christmas Vacation.

There is no need for a special definition of anything. Call out absurdity within a community that has become so accustomed to complaint isn't really defending anything, it is commentary on a habit of pathetic whining that seems to have taken root.
An electronic newsletter pushing for holiday purchases makes the point that they will send moderate sized purchases in a special, decorative box. What is wrong with that?
You can get all manner of decorative shipping boxes. Some places even sell them. But since it is GW and plenty of people have decided it is a hobby in itself to sit and cry over every action and statement the company makes, a stupid shipping box becomes a source of a rumor discussion on Dakka Dakka? Awesome.

So you really think GW is actively going to compete with discount online retailers? They have already taken steps to reduce the discount sales. I don't know who honestly orders from GW direct, but that isn't really the point. If they felt they needed to compete with online retailers, they would likely take further steps to reduce those retailers ability to offer significant discounts. As it is they audit online retailers to ensure they are still selling through brick and mortar locations.

Then we agree on that. Which is why we'll leave mocking and complaining to their own respective definitions.

You realize you're part of this community, and are whining about said community. I hope the irony isn't lost on you.

Nothing.
What's wrong with making fun of it?

Just like all the people who come on to the forums to tell everyone else how stupid they sound is sooooo much better, right?
But let's make this a bigger deal than it is, where the majority of thread is simply shaking their head at GW and making fun of their continued ineptitude.

I sort of like the box, because I love boxes. I have a ridiculous amount of boxes of all shapes and sizes... and if I did an order and got this box as a cool thing, I would be overjoyed... but the promoting it is lame. They have a picture on the website and in the app - which is fine - it is the email promotion that sends this to over the top levels.
Oh well. I don't really understand the ridicule or the rage on either side - and while I like the box (because I am a weirdo and love boxes) I think the promotion is a bit lame.

No-one is crying over it, unless there's tears of laughter.
As said; shipping stuff in fancy boxes over Christmas (or any time) is fine, no-one has a problem with that. GW sending an email to tell everyone about it as some special promotion is just lame, and requiring a huge purchase to get it at the same time is just lamer. It's a disposable box with some fancy printing on it, has no gift or collectors value, and is something that no other company in the world would offer as part of a promotion. It just doesn't do anything to drive sales.

Again, this just goes to show what a lame company GW is. When Wyrd runs their holiday promo, you get an exclusive figure and special effects minis like their clear plastic ghost/ice/shadow figures, etc. PP offers actual discount bundles and a rules book. GW offers... a box.

Everyone here is complaining about the wrong box..................
This is the box you all should be complaing about
The reason why is because its awesome. This project box is a pretty awesome thing for quick set up and break down as well as taking a project with you. Why you should be complaining is because it is quite useful IMO but for $66 make its a fething joke. Even for $33 its a joke. If this box was in the 20's I would own one but sadly for $66 this box is just something that I wish wasnt obnoxiously priced and want one just like the old GW bags
These???
Everyone I know who owns one loves them but they came with an attached price of NOPE.
The real complaint that everyone should have here is not the free cardboard (who cares really?) but the actually pretty cool products that they price in such a manner that makes it just obnoxious to own. If those project boxes were $25 I know about 20 people who would own one by now. This is the real shame about the holiday "box"

Again, the issue isn't the box itself, it's the misguided idea that we're all suddenly going to spend £100 in order to get it.
It's like an estate agent offering you a house for £999,000, but saying they'll throw in a free doorbell if you round it up to £1,000,000.
Right now if your order comes to £95, they're counting on the offer of a flashy delivery box to get you to round it out to £100+.

Im not going to be spending the money on it. My complaint is different as its something useful rather then just any old cardboard box. So no i will not be buying a project box because it is way overpriced. The difference is that one you get for free for ordering a specific amount of product and is utterly useless, the other is quite a useful product that is just way overpriced.
One is something worth having and the other is dumb. Thats the difference

No, it's not a silly complaint; GW thinks that we're all stupid enough to be tempted to spend more money in exchange for a box. If that's not flipping the proverbial Vs up at your customers then I don't know what is. I personally care because treating your customers as if they're brain-dead morons just doesn't sit well with me.

Sure they are trying to get people to buy stuff to get a cardboard box is dumb but the box is inherently free while other products that you are actually paying for is just silly.

We expect overpriced stuff from GW. I've already complained in another thread about how they want $45 for the ebook version of the new Shield of Baal campaign, because the elections must be gold plated or something.
But to advertise their Christmas promotion as a special shipping box at a certain price point? That's just absurd.
