So, my prejudice against clear flight rods is something I've been going on about for a while, but I'm looking to actually do something about it for my Dark Eldar.
Would you personally have a problem playing against an army where the clear flight bases had been replaced with 30mm or 60mm ones?

The 25mm is way too small for the small flying base, but the 40mm is fairly close. I would not accept the 25mm base for jetbikes, as it allows your to cram them closer together and makes it easier to hide them or fit more into base contact to get hammer of wrath attacks. 40mm seems fine to me, I don't think the size difference would have an appreciable effect on the game.
The 60mm base is very close to the same size as the large flying base, so I don't see any issue with using it. Skimmers measure from the hull anyhow, so the base size doesn't matter nearly as much.
EDIT: I originally said 30mm instead of 25mm

The jet bikes comes with the small flying stand, so they are meant to be on them via rules. I personally base my flying bases and leave the stem clear, it looks quite good imo. Look into my dark eldar at my gallery.

Jimsolo, maybe use a metal rod instead of the clear plastic rod if you don't like it? Then you can just sand and flock the clear plastic base to make it look like every other base in the army. That way you're following the "must be on the original base" rules.

No pins for me I'm afraid. Anything supporting the model which I'm supposed to pretend isn't there (pin, stick, or widget) absolutely ruins the model for me. I'd like to pay to have the army painted, but if I can't eliminate the hover supports it'd just be wasted money: the better the paint job, the worse it would get. The whole point of painting and basing is to fool the eye into thinking it sees something real, but the pin/stick makes the whole thing look like just a toy.

Is that an actual 30mm base (like the round lipped kind) on the left or a 25mm base? You're the first person to suggest 30mm might be too small.

What about scenic bases where the terrain either holds up the model or hides the pins doing so? Automatically Appended Next Post: Also judging from the discussion in the Deathstorm thread the smallest flying stand is 32mm.

That's pretty much what I'm aiming for, just making sure it isn't going to cost me games.

As long as it doesn't significantly alter the models LoS profile I'd love to face an army done up like that.

At various times, jetbikes have come with either. At one point they came with both at the same time, depending on whether you got the single bike, the squadron, or the battle force.
So either size is fine.

If you don't like the clear peg, just use a matte black one on a scenic base. It's less obvious, still looks goods, and tend to not break as much.

Just spitballing, but what if you angle the rod a little and green stuff or otherwise model in a 'dust cloud' holding up each skimmer/Jetbike. It's still centered around a clear rod, weighted maybe and angled to a different part of the model so it stays centered over the base, but the dust can extend naturally. It's still going to be seen, but it'll have a Modelling purpose besides 'toy held up'.

So either size is fine.
I don't think I've ever bought a kit with a flying base that didn't come with all the available sizes for flight stems.

My best solution is just flat black flight sticks.
I've never been a big fan of the terrain supporting idea... it CAN work ok for one model, but for the most part it just looks weird seeing a flying thing clipping in to terrain, especially when you have 10 jet bikes all crashing in to terrain.
There is no real other option beyond magnetic levitation, but since there's no passive magnetic levitation without super conductors it's not really practical. Maybe mag lev with guy wires stabilizing it.

You're talking about nicely put together scenic bases and well painted models , Jim?
I'd be delighted to play against them. Couldn't give a gak if they aren't the exact size/hieght of the box supplied bases.
