Spoiler:

When I was about fourteen, I discovered a copy of The Dungeon Master: The Disappearance of James Dallas Egbert III in the local library’s used-book bin. Noting that it had something to do with Dungeons and Dragons, and also noting that it cost about $1, I bought it.

That book stuck with me for a long time.

Egbert was the sixteen-year-old who infamously disappeared in the Michigan State University steam tunnels in 1979, supposedly during a live-action Dungeons and Dragons session, provoking a nation-wide scare about the then-new role-playing game. When Egbert vanished, his parents hired William Dear, a private detective, to locate him. Dear theorized that it was Egbert’s involvement in D&D that led to his disappearance; he went on to investigate the game himself, even going so far as to play a session.

It was the early days of the Satanic Panic—the Christian Right’s effort to convince the public that D&D, heavy metal, backwards-masked messages in records, the occult, Halloween, and alleged (but never substantiated) ritual abuse in day cares were nodes in a gigantic conspiratorial web ensnaring the youth of America in the clutches of the Dark One—and Egbert’s disappearance would only serve to enflame the public’s fears. The case would inspire the infamous TV movie Mazes and Monsters, in which a young Tom Hanks freaks out from playing too much D&D and stabs one of his friends in a steam tunnel after hallucinating that he’s turned into a monster. (The adults, of course, just don’t understand.)

Now, as all nerds know, the most perfidious thing about Dungeons and Dragons is not that it drives you crazy and makes you see monsters, it’s that it keeps you from getting laid. However, it also tends to entrain skills that kids will use later in life to become successful adults—while awkward teenagers think that they’re role-playing wizards and dark elves, what they’re actually doing is simulating something like a corporate meeting, complete with paper-shuffling, public speaking, teamwork, obsessing over numerical minutiae, delegating responsibilities (like who’s getting the Mountain Dew next), and so on. (Name me one other activity that can get hormone-crazed teenage monkeys to sit around a table, scribble on paper and talk to each other for hours on end.) Little did parents understand that Dungeons and Dragons would both successfully drive a wall between their kids and anything cool, like sex and drugs, it would also train them to be productive suits in later life. Birth control and corporate training in one game!

Of course, at the time, the public saw Dungeons and Dragons as akin to goat sacrifice. And Egbert was the focus of that hysteria during the weeks in which Dear searched for him.

The truth of the matter, however, was much more painful. At the time of his disappearance, Egbert was a sixteen-year-old prodigy who had been pushed by his parents since early childhood to overachieve. They’d rushed him to graduate from school early, and subsequently enrolled him in Michigan State, where he stuck out like a preschooler. In addition to his social misplacement and the tremendous academic pressure put on him by his parents, Egbert was struggling to hide his blossoming homosexuality—both from his parents and from a not-exactly-friendly 1979 Michigan. Unable to make friends at the university, Egbert drifted into the Dungeons and Dragons players—but only briefly, looking for some way, any way to connect. He also drifted into drugs. And what actually happened when he disappeared was not a D&D freak out—Egbert entered the steam tunnels to take an overdose of Quaaludes. When that didn’t work, he ran for the home of an older male “admirer,” where he hid out for weeks, leading to the hysteria over his disappearance. His parents, unwilling to publicly air the fact that their son was gay, readily bought the Dungeons and Dragons narrative.

Egbert was eventually located by Dear, who spent a good deal of time trying to help him come to terms with his situation and listen to him, something nobody had done. Unfortunately, Egbert ran again, this time to the gay party scene in New Orleans, where he again tried to kill himself—with cyanide, again unsuccessfully. After taking a job as a laborer at an oil field, he attempted suicide yet again, this time with a gun. He succeeded. pic668926_md

William Dear wrote The Dungeon Master four years later (Egbert, deeply pained by his homosexuality, had urged Dear not to reveal the truth), largely to correct the misrepresentation of the case by the news media.

Needless to say, Dear’s account totally harshed my 14-year-old mellow when all I wanted was a book that would properly explain to me what THAC0 was.†

Now, in hindsight, it strikes me what a poster child Egbert is for the true teenage outsider—not the dumb rock burnout, but the one that can truly say that “nobody understands me,” the one that’s judged to be too smart, too weird, too queer, too in the wrong place at the wrong time. Reading stuff on Egbert on the Web now, I notice a recurring theme—people seem to agree that, had he just chosen to hang on a few years longer, everything would have been fine. What Egbert decided to annihilate himself for in 1980 is now much closer to mainstream, legally protected life in suburban America.

As dark as Egbert’s tale is, and as damning of its time and place as it is, it’s also a startling testament to how much things have changed—and yet not at all. Columbine and Virginia Tech kind of make steam tunnel escapades look positively Archie and Jughead, and we still live in a world in which homophobic violence is endemic. But as flat and boring as our monoculture is, it gives me hope that it’s still an increasingly accepting one.

Even of Dungeons and Dragons… well, kind of.

† If you get this joke, you are going to hell.

A sad story really.

It was the Judas Priest trial I recall being quite WTF, but wiki says the case didn't start until 1990.

There were loads of " A friend of a friend..." stories about people who'd done terrible deeds after watching EVIL HORROR FILMS, and I've confirmed that in at least 2 schools in different parts of the Uk there was a story that went round about a pupil -- always at a rival school -- who was suspended for making/owning a Freddy Kruegar style glove and cutting someone with it at school.

Maybe that is the case in the US. But even back in the early 00's, when I went to Iran, heavy metal was already cool and trendy there (heard MetallicA for the first time in a taxi in Tehran by night ), and likely even the government thought it was less satanic and evil that pop music with naked ladies .
Ah, the United States of America .

Ehh, for every "Iran" there's a Russia.... who just banned ALL music, lyrics, merchandise and imagery from Cannibal Corpse

A few examples of what happened in my town...

- we had teachers who openly preached against heavy metal and D&D in classes telling us it was evil, playing it backwards told us stuff and satanic ect ect. Now in classes even related to the topic like maybe sociology or whatnot but in classes like biology and english or math.

-We had teachers actively calling us out by name and calling us satanists because of the music we listened to and playing D&D (and "have you SEEN the models they paint"*gasp*

-Preachers actually coming to my home to "talk to me" and try to set me on the right path.

-I believe I already mentioned the thugs and job blackballing

-Extended family taking part in the lies and ostrasization

-Stories and lies spread and retold and outdone...here are just a FEW examples.....
*I heard them below my house killing cats last night
*He and his buddies vandalized (insert area that had been vandalized, most likely by druggies or the rich kids) as some sort of satanic ritual
*I saw him driving a hearse through town at midnight on halloween. He was in the back killing cats.
No idea how people believed that last as it was physically impossible on the surface of it even if I was of a mind to try lol.

Luckily my parents knew I was not any of these things and supported me/stood up for me when they could.

I have seen where it still happens to a degree and it even happens ithin the gaming community in places like here. just recently someone was making fun of me for having to live through it and I pointed out how it was not a joking matter and gave examples of other similer examples that they would not think to make fun of because of the extremes those other examples were. My point was a wrong is a wrong regardless of the degree. Is it more wrong to rob a bank than it is to rob a single person? Is it more wrong to abuse a classroom of kids than it is to abuse a single child? I would say no, the "crime" is the same, your just doing more of it. It is not "funny" to make light of another's pain or suffering. You dont have to be the worlds greatest expert to know this.
many of us have indeed suffered over this and we should support one another instead of tearing one another down.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Adding. When I was a counseling manager at Job Corps, I was BARELY able to help kids play MTG and 40k. Even then, I had to STRONGLY coach the kids on what they said and what models to get. For example if one had wanted to play daemons or talked about casting a dark ritual to get more mana or something like that and word got around to some of the staff, I'da been fired and the kids sent home.
All hell broke loose when I mentioned running a D&D campaign for them and I had to drop the subject. The reason? because supposedly a bunch of satanic D&D players caught the field on fire behind the dorms. Really? you sure it wasnt just a campfire that got out of control or a ciggarette tossed into the dry corn? Your ABSOLUTELY sure it was a satanic ritual? suuurrreee.

Just about the only story that I have heard from my local area, was about a group who was "breaking in" to the back of the local opera house and performing satanic rituals... And this was only "found out" when the new owner was surveying their new purchase to get a better idea of what needed to be renovated/remodeled, etc.

What REALLY was happening: The previous owner wasn't making as much as they thought they should have, so was renting out the back rooms at off times to just about any group that asked. The theater has had numerous stories of being haunted and the like, so you can imagine the crowd that brought with it. So, anyhow, there was a group with a regular DnD game going for quite some time, and they were.... enthusiastic about mood/setting.

The room in question had chalk "spell circles" candles in various states of burned, which obviously give things a satanic air... the icing on the cake of course, was that someone had left an early 2nd ed. book (I dont know which one, because of the source I personally heard the story from)

A lot of stories like that floated about and still are. To be honest, you cant really believe them without seeing it with your own eyes. Its always a friend of a friend or from someone of high standing in the church or something and after a few retellings it becomes a "fact". lol
A great example of the sort of thing we had to deal with in terms of stories and actions taken against us because we were "different".

Lol, it actually happens that I first heard the story exactly as you said... exaggeration after exaggeration became fact, however I later was able to meet and talk to one of the contractors who helped rebuild the place and he was telling me the visuals were all spot on. the DM, or one of the players had actually used chalk to create circular designs, there were candles, etc. and he was the one who told me directly about the 2nd ed. book (the church story merely played on the "Satanic Roleyplaying" and not the book present), as he was a part time player and long time collector of DnD/RPG books.

I've had an argument about that before with my other half. I was in a local comic/gaming store where a demo game of something going on a Saturday afternoon. A couple of dads where in there with their sons playing the game and a group of other gamers where standing round watching. My other half was getting her hair done at the time and she knew I was in the store so she came and met me when she'd finished. We left almost as soon as she got there.

Afterwards she said something to me in passing about how a group of grown men watching children play a game had a bit of creepy vibe about it. I was a bit taken back as she's always been very tolerant of my hobbies.

I tried explained to her that it was the game we were interested in and the fact that it was kids playing had nothing to do with it. She said that she understood that but that it still freaked her out. It actually really annoyed me that she perceived that grown men just being in proximity to children was somehow sinister. I ended up having quite a rant about it at her about it.

That's really a society thing though...

Are you a little league coach? We'll keep an extra close eye on you, because you're a pedo. Do you coach girls Volleyball, or softball, school Track/field teams? You're probably a pedo and want to get into those kids' pants, so we're gonna keep an extra eye on you.

Reality is, of course, that the number of actual pedos who act on those urges is such a minority, that people should be worrying about other things around what their kids are doing. (such as the apparent connection between girls playing soccer on Astroturf and Leukemia, particularly if they are goalkeepers)

Dad listens to more vulgar, irreverent music than I generally do. My parents let me be all black and teenagery, but I missed hitting the 80s while in my teen years, so most of the scare du jour might have passed. The first couple days after Columbine involved a lot of eye rolling though.

My grandparents are most of the the nutty puritanical force in the family, but I just politely invited them to feth off, and that took care of the judgmental scowls.

Oh, but certainly most if not all metal is banned in Iran. Just like most if not all western music, especially from the USA and/or featuring sexy singers/dancers/lyrics. Does not stop anyone from listening to it .
Actually, if you want to find out more about music in Iran, I highly recommend the movie No One Knows About Persian Cats. Especially if you like music. All music, from metal to jazz to rap to traditional stuff. It is about musicians that live in Iran though, rather than foreign music, but hey, where do you think they get their influences .
Here, some small extract from the movie with metal in it:

Man, the worst radio station in my region plays music like this. Only the 40+ year olds like it. So much bad music.

Whats worse is most of the business men are 40+ so a lot of the shops etc force us to listen to it while at work.

Whats worse, is no new 80s rock is being made (except a few desperate albums as far as I can gather from once popular bands) and so its the same music... forever... until our bosses retire...

Then my age group will run businesses and repeat the cycle, but it will be more glorious, for suffer I will not.

80s and all but I can't really recall ever having to explain anything in relation to music or games to anyone. I guess our bible belt is so far away from my part of the country that it had no effect, if they even knew about those things.

A couple of friends did hit the inquisition though. One guy's mom called other moms she knew and tried to convince them that their kids were listening to satanic music and probably involved in some neo-nazi movement. I'd guess that was more about the combat boots and leather jackets than the actual music.
