And I was prepped to go, did the 12 mile before hand, and tore a bunch of muscles in my leg (still finished the march). Now I've got other things to concentrate on. Our first year here is usually spent TDY getting spun up to support Army ops. Don't worry though, I'll be one of only a few hundred in the AF who wear that badge by the end of 2015.

Just as Alex Kolodotscko, if he's really a tradesman will have some inside jokes that none but other tradesmen will understand, I won't engage in his type of banter, or banter with a doctor/nurse, etc. so long as it is regarding their profession.

So you are enforcing banter standards now?

'Earning' the right to banter? What? Who is the almighty judge who decides when someone has earned the right to joke about x?

I'd understand it if it was a racist joke (given the long history of discrimination that would remind people of) but there seems to be little discrimination for soldiers. On the contrary, they almost seem worshipped around here.

No, it's about respect... Kind of how, if you're with a group of friends, and y'all have an "inside joke" that only that small group would understand, and someone else tries to chime in on that joke, your group is gonna look at that person kinda funny...

In this instance, the "inside joke" is the banter/making fun of each other's branch of service. Quite often, you'll see people who've never served try to jump in on that same banter, and completely miss the jokes.

I dunno. While it may be more difficult to understand and thus be amused by the inside joke, it doesn't mean I know of anyone who would actually disapprove of someone who tried.
For example, I have 0 military service history, but I could find a well-placed 'chair force' joke amusing.

By earning, I'm referring to earning the "right" to wear the uniform, through passing basic training, etc. There really isn't a judge per se.

Here's another example, from within the military:

I had an Airborne 1SG, spent his first 15 or so years in a jump slot, and IIRC he was a part of the last ever "mustard stain" to happen.... He and my CO used to joke about other guys with jump wings, calling them "5 jump chumps", to mean that they did their airborne school jumps, and no more.

Now, I "cannot" use the 5 jump chump "joke" because, well, I'm a dirty nasty Leg.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Ash, what I'm ultimately saying, isn't that you wouldn't get a good "chair force" or "jarhead", etc. joke... it's that, if you tried to throw in a chair force joke yourself, it probably wouldn't go over well (see my airborne example above)

But what's so special about the military anyway? It's just a job. No one would bat an eyelid if someone made a joke about, say, politicians. Which everyone does, all the time.

As I mentioned on the previous page, sure, it's a risky job... but it's a risk you accept when you take the job, and no one forces you to take it.

No offense of course.

I will happily mock almost anything with friends. I personally hold very little to be a sacred cow in isolation*.

Context matters though, It's when I'm with friends. If I'm not with friends I will modify my behaviour.

So yeah, I'm fairly on board with people in the services feeling that random kids trying to join in their banter is somewhat disrespectful to them. They fully have the right and ability to do it, which you know, but it's not a polite thing to do. Of course, what counts as "polite" can vary massively from person to person.

*This especially includes the military, politicians, religion, clowns, fire fighters and policemen

It is and it isn't... and if you've never had the job, then you don't get to make fun of it. It's that simple. You weren't there, you have not done the things we have done. You have not earned the "right" to say (as an Army serviceman), "Yeah, I was gonna go into the Corps, but I scored too high on the ASVAB".

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

Well, knowing how military acquisition works, it's most likely not practical (or at least no significant improvement over current methods), however because a politician's friend owns a contracting company that makes widgets this will get ordered after a horrendously long and over-budget R&D period where significant problems will most likely go unreported, then it will be shipped out in limited numbers (because halfway through everyone realized how buggered the program was, but nobody could cancel it) at a price about 10x what it should cost.

As someone who does military contracting work (on the training side, not the acquisition or development I will say) I am pretty sure the biggest threat to our military is currently Contracting companies (especially shipyards. feth shipyards).

I've no experience with contractors in shipyards. I do have experience as over sight on contractors in AMC (I did have) which was one of my many hats I had to wear.

There is a massive difference. Politicians aren't trained killers. While most members of any armed forces are unlikely to be put in a position where they must kill enemy combatants, it has an indisputable psychological affect on you, as does the training as well. The training of most military units is focused entirely on psychologically breaking a man or woman, then building them back up stronger with the rest of their unit, coming to the end result of having a group of people who often hold stronger emotional bonds to each other then their own flesh and blood.

I work with the company that trains Navy Nukes (many of which have been out on a sea tour before becoming nukes. Lots of cool sea stories). There have been many horror stories about shipyard employees who don't really care that the stuff they're building/fixing might need to save someone's life someday.

As far as the whole "service ribbing" thing, I have to catch myself sometimes. Pretty much all my friends are military people and I did a little military indoc before I learned my lungs were messed up. I'm kind of in the weird position of relating to military better than I do civilians, but at the same time not ever actually experiencing all the bad stuff.
