Sorry for the threadomancy, but I have ordered a bunch of the mdf bases from warbases and I would like to know how you recommend sealing them prior to gluing or painting.

I didnt do anything special.

I glued sand, then undercoated with spray paint and then painted normally.

Oh and as for the other comments in the thread I also use round bases for my KOW models so I can use them for other systems and War bases were great in designing a 4,4,3 ranking base for me as well so I have a central model in the front rank for measurement purposes and the models look a little more disorderly.

I was always told spray primers and paints soaked in through the ends and caused the mdf to warp. You didn't have any problems with that?

I have minor warping, if I hold down one side the other raises off of a flat surface by approx 1mm which doesnt bother me at all.

I put that down to the PVA glue on top (but i could be totally wrong)

NOTE : the top photo I posted shows both ends of the movement tray lifted off of the green tray, the green plastic tray they are on is heavily warped so it isnt an indication of the tray warping

EDIT - One thing that might be in my favour is that the trays are actually 2 halves (top/bottom) glued together, this may greatly help reduce warpage due to that core strength

I use warbases on all my KoW armies. I tend to glue the front rank down, and prime the base + front rank, and then prime the individual guys for the back rank, painting them separately. I have had zero issues with warping. I use Army Painter sprays.

This is: 4000 points of Orcs, 2500 points of Goblins, 2000 points of Dwarves.

Why do you prime the second rank separately?

Probably so the front rank doesn't block the spray.

Now showing Wasteland Weirdos for TNT and zombies for Dungeon Saga!

Painting total as of 22 July 2025: 99 plus a Deva King statue

Painting total as of 12/31/2024: 107 plus a set of modular spaceship terrain and two walkers and a quad mech and five giants

Yup! Front rank on base, prime, second rank white glued on popsicle stick or equivalent, prime.
