Based on whether or not they have a distinct gameplay niche. SoB are just another MEQ shooting army, especially now that the GK precedent pretty strongly suggests that we're never going to see any of the inquisition elements in the SoB codex again. You could easily move them into C:SM without losing any of their fluff or gameplay.

(And yes, this standard results in other armies losing their codex.)

I think you are wrong on Just about every point you make.

The SOB are and should be far more than space marines with boobs.

They embody the zealous, religious overtones of the Imperium and should have a codex with special rules and wargeaf that reflects that. And a new range of killer models.

in fact they are far more interesting than many of the marine chapters they insist on rehashing over and over...

Of course the average twelve year old (actual or mental age) can't get past "models with Boobies heh heh!!!" And won't play them so they have been allowed to languish. Sad really, but you have to give the kiddies what they want even if it's the same thing over and over with a different name...

Eloquent as ever sir.

The electropriests are kind of average. The Robby Robot variant does help but they are still too smooth for my tastes. I'm thinking of either using the FW variant or these guys:

Far from it. You said something with a cogent argument, where as I would be a frothing barbarian seeking to bury my literary axe in the fellows head.

But you know and it will be the last thing regarding this for the time being. Sisters Need an update more than any other Army save Squats. And if they did I'd throw money at them for either.

I like most of this release except the robot (as a number of others have said). But what really irks me about them, perhaps irrationally so, is the damn misspelling in the name! WHY does it have to be Kastellan?

Because it's easier to police trademarks on made -up words.

Under US law at least it makes no difference for trademarks (any similar sounds 'count' in trademark law), but it does make a difference to things like google searches.

As the gallery mod I'm lately irked that we have both Terminator (big thick 40k armored suit) and Terminator (future robots looking to kill us).

Spelling one of them Terminatron (or whatever) would make life easier.

So I've finally made up my mind about the Kastellans, and here's why I don't like them.

I picture myself as a Guardsmen in the 41st millenium, standing in a trench. Maybe I'm part of a traitor regiment, maybe I'm just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I see in the distance a horde of Skitarii Vanguard closing on the lines, I'm going to start shaking in my standard-issue imperium jackboots.

All the sudden there are spikey, spindly, creepy, almost evil looking robot dudes with machine pistols and crackling laser swords up in our grill that came at the line so fast we barely had time to react. I'm pissing in my standard-issue imperium uniform.

Hell, even dudes with giant lances on chicken walkers closing in fast, or giant crab tanks with huge guns, I'm going to be gaking those pants.

But, I see Kastellan robots slowly waddling towards the trenches? My reaction would probably be "what the heck is that chuck of metal doing slowly lumbering towards the trench?"

Everything else in the Skitarii and Admech line has this very pseudo-evil, intimidating look to it. The Skitarii and the Sicarians look soulless and haunting. Sure the Kastellans look soulless, but not hauntingly so. That's what I think they're missing. They're missing that intimidating factor that is so key for the aesthetic of the faction.

The above is just my opinion, please take it or leave it as such.

Oh man that's the easiest thing to fix evah. All you do is paint a scary face on the Kastellan. Problem solved!

Weird, everything I say is fact.

I do not like the Kastelans at all and would not buy them. Well at least not for 40K - they would fit in lovely in a pulp sci-fi setting as opponents for flash gordon or Leela...

There just is nothing either Grimdark Gothic or Bat gak crazy Blanche about them. The Mechanicum releases are really hit and miss, I dont like the electro priests or robot assasins much either but the tracked servitors, priest and others are good. And the chicken walker is wonderfully over the top ceary and definetley a future buy for me...

Yeah, the Kastelans are too smooth and wimpy for me, I don't even think their arms are long enough to hit anything not equally as tall as them, and those heads are horrid in all regards, down to the shape of both the head itself and of the visor, they don't fit anything aesthetically, they look like a 9 year old's happy meal toys made it on the battlefield. Will definitely be looking at alternatives and picking up the datasmith alone on ebay. I guess only time and the painting and modeling forum will tell if they actually look good or not

FW robots are each 37 pounds. which right now is $56.01 USD. + whatever shipping would cost you.

Oy! Quite a bit more then (granted they are a lot nicer looking though). I'll have to see how the rules shake out, especially for the tracked infantry. Otherwise I may just stick with the Skitarii side of things.

We'll find out soon enough eh.

Someone over at B&C(sorry I forget who, I saved it and reupped) did this edit, and that brings it almost all the way to acceptable for my tastes. I'd still probably try and figure a way to replace the cherry red pumps with Dread feet or somesuch, and something needs to be done about the Blaster arm variants, but even just swapping out the "head" and adding decent shoulders goes a long way.

Quite glad I've still not got around to assembling my Castellax yet, I should be able to InstantMold the top piece easy enough.

"The language of modern British politics is meant to sound benign. But words do not mean what they seem to mean. 'Reform' actually means 'cut' or 'end'. 'Flexibility' really means 'exploit'. 'Prudence' really means 'don't invest'. And 'efficient'? That means whatever you want it to mean, usually 'cut'. All really mean 'keep wages low for the masses, taxes low for the rich, profits high for the corporations, and accept the decline in public services and amenities this will cause'." - Robin McAlpine from Common Weal
