http://abc7news.com/politics/state-of-oklahoma-to-consider-ban-on-hoodies/461480/

The state of Oklahoma may soon ban wearing hoodies.

Republican state Senator Don Barrington has introduced a bill that would ban people from hiding their identity in public. That includes having a hoodie over someone's head.

Oklahoma already bans wearing such clothing or a disguise while committing a crime.

But the new proposal would also ban a person from intentionally concealing "his or her identity in a public place by means of a robe, mask, or other disguise."

The bill states that it is "immediately necessary for the preservation of the public peace, health and safety."

Violators would face a $500 fine.

How would you define it? Is there like a temperature standard too?

It has the standard religious exemption, so pasta strainers are still ok. Also has one for inclement weather.

It's a stupid waste of time law and would just let the cops bug you whenever they feel that you had the intent to conceal your face.

The law already says it's against the law to conceal your identity (mask/hoodie/whatever) if you are committing a crime, so this does nothing.

But hey, at least it's not against the law in this state to walk around with a gun on each hip and a rifle and shotgun across your back. Hoodies, that's where we draw the line!

Do they play Ice Hockey in Oklahoma? Not any more!

Nor American Football neither.

High end cricket would also be illegal -- perhaps not such a worry.

Also motorcycling.

Wouldn't it be easier to pass a bill making it illegal to commit crimes?

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

This seems like a very unnecessary law, and possibly administratively unenforceable

Hmm....I feel this sentence says a lot about Oklahoma.

The law was initially written during the time the KKk was roaming around the state and was targeting the wearing of those hoods while harassing others.

It's like any other number of laws that add charges to crimes:

1) rob a store: charge 1
2) use a gun while doing so: additional charge
3) wear a disguise: additional charge

Although I don't think I have heard of anyone being charged with it...

I think in the legal sense it's a "throw it all against the wall and see what sticks" theory. I wonder if you can be arrested for resisting arrest and also have this charge thrown against you.

I have to agree. We can't prove they robbed the store, but we can prove that they wore a disguise! The scattergun approach to pressing charges is very odd.

I'm not sure how cold it gets in OK, but where I live it gets continualy below 0F in the winter. Would not a scarf conceal my identity? Much more than a hoodie would. This is just a bad law. And a stupid one as well. And this from the party that apparently is the party of individual liberty. feth 'em, I say.

I posted this in the comments section of one of the places that ran the original story and I'll repeat it here for you. Why the hell are people pushing legislation that is clearly unconstitutional on its face? They have to know this will be challenged and ruled against in court.

Fething ridiculous.

I remember I was getting ready to leave the UK when stores started banning the wearing of hoodies on their premises, even stores that SOLD HOODIES.

I thought I was gonna be leaving that nonsense behind me...

D-USA is correct. Its one of several measures designed initially to combat the KKK. Many states had (and may still have) laws that make it illegal to march, gather, or protest in public with a fully covered head.

Right but Hoodies aren't an inherent right, core to the very basic fundamentals of your humanity. However, the right to as much modern firepower as you can possible handle is exactly that kind of basic aspect of being human. You can't compare the two. It's like trying compare air or water to luxury yachts, private jets, or deluxe virtual-reality sex simulators.

Something like that anyway.
