Sorry if this is the wrong place for this guys!

What is the feeling about Tau fliers, including the Barracuda? I impulse bought a Barracuda recently, partly because the model is awesome, but I've never used fliers before so I'm about unsure how effective this or other Tau fliers might be.

I will go to the animal shelter and get you a kitty cat. I will let you fall in love with that kitty cat; and then on some dark cold night, I will steal away into your home, and punch you in the face.

The standard codex flyers are kind of garbage. The Barracuda is fairly decent from what I've seen. Never played with one before though.

I'm expecting an Imperial Knights supplement dedicated to GW's loyalist apologetics. Codex: White Knights "In the grim dark future, everything is fine."

"The argument is that we have to do this or we will, bit by bit,
lose everything that we hold dear, everything that keeps the business going. Our crops will wither, our children will die piteous
deaths and the sun will be swept from the sky."

Tau flyer overview, not counting SH:

Sunshark-was nice at 6th because the drones were better. with changed to interceptor/skyfire working, they are no longer useful for much anything.

Razorshark-was never good at anything except "I got your rear" tricks. unimpressed.

Barracuda-packs a powerful punch, but has troubles with manuvering a small table. I suspect he will be great on large tables like apoc, but not quite good at regular ones. still looks amazing.

Remora-the most annoying little bugger in the game. flying with 2+ cover on the jink. too bad it lack the punch, but due to networked markerlights they each get better the bigger the pack gets-meaning a big pack has some potential.

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.

Basically as Boomwulf said..
I use my Barracudas as air superiority mainly..if my opponent decides to pack some fliers..we usually do a little battlefield intel before a game...
Like do you have fliers..if yes (not how many) then maybe I bring some..then they ask do I have yadda yadda..
Again friendly games.
But Cudas are nice in the AA role.

Its probably the best flyer the Tau have as far as damage output.

Remoras are certainly annoying, but the only thing they really provide are Markerlights. Their Burst cannons aren't all that scary.

Self-proclaimed evil Cat-person. Dues Ex Felines

Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.

Don't forget the seeker missiles (two per Remora), which will usually be BS 5 thanks to all the networked markerlights.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Good to know about the codex flyers, I'm not a fan of their models at all so I don't feel I'm missing out on anything now!

I do worry about the Barracuda struggling on smaller tables, but then I guess it's like a lot of units, it's how you use it. I'll have to play test and see how it goes.

Have you ever had any issues with anyone not letting you bring the Barracuda because it's a FW product?

Thanks for this

Well, the reason I say it has trouble on smaller tables is that it cannot hover (being supersonic and all), and has a fixed directional yet powerful gun with great range-making it great for strafing a large battlefield, yet it requires the space in order to function.

In a small table you might see it having no way to get a targeting line very often.

What do you consider small tables? We normally play on 6x4.

6X4 is a good size for 2000pt and less maybe 2500..but thats pushing it

4 x 4 was common in gw stores and is very small for fliers..well just small in general..unless you have alot of vertical terrain.

and no..none of my fellow players have ever been adverse to my cudas..I dont spam much..and usually have a TO&E force..(troops..apc..etc in formations)

Just have the rules ready for your opponents to read and give them a chance before the game to familiarize themselves with them.

Good call. At the moment it's just going to be me and a friend playing so that'll help but eventually I want to join a local gaming group so I'll have to be prepared.

I had the misfortune to play a five thousand point doubles game on a 6x4 board during 5th edition. It was an impressively dumb game.

Depending on the armies 6x4 can be fine all the way up to 3k (more so if there are a lot of expensive troops and vehicles, less so if it's Orks vs. swarm 'Nids or some such) but beyond that you really need to start expanding out.

Balanced Game: Noun. A game in which all options and choices are worth using.

Did you have much movement in a game of that size on a board too small for it?

yeah..once you play floor40k or on a 5 X 10 table..its hard to go back to the little boards...its amazing how different of a game it becomes as the size of battlefield increases...just have plenty of terrain..and cluster it realistically.
Little towns..industrial area..hills with forest..etc..

I'd love to have a great looking board but I'm really crap at modelling and building stuff so it scares me a little.

But I think what I'm learning from this thread at least is that with the Barracuda room on the board is going to be key for getting the best out of it.

6x4 is still plenty of space for flyers that aren't Mantas. You shouldn't have space issues on tables that size or above. And anything smaller isn't supported by the core rules.

It really isnt for things with non-torrent main guns that cannot hover.
