Why does the whole alpha legion think they are alpharius? Are you telling me, newly created recruits who recieve geneseed believe they are alpharius, and that nobody else in their chapter knows, and they keep it a secret, suposedly to protect themselves? I understand the black rage, so I guess it could be a strongly passed down feeling like that. That would be akward in battle, going in all smug thinking you are a hidden primarch and nobody will be able to touch you. Or when your dying, bleeding out on the field, and calling to your legion to not leave their primarch behind! I think this more than most of the background fluff confuses me more.

In all seriousness, it's to cause confusion in the enemy by using multiple layers of deception.

If you can't locate the head, it's much harder to kill the beast

Lol unless there's actuall fluff otherwise, they don't believe they're all Alpharius. They just say they're Alpharius, because no Astartes would lie about being a Primarch, so you have no choice but to believe them. It's for the actual primarchs protection.

Thought they stopped doing that in the Serpent Beneath? "I thought you all called yourself Alpharius?" To which Omegron replied coldly "times change". Kind of signifying the split between the twins perhaps?

The Alpha Legion's philosophy can be summarised thusly: Trololololololololololololololololololololol
Anyway, all marines in the election are surgically modified to look exactly the same. No-one believes they're Alpharius, it's just so that the enemy doesn't know who's who. It really plays in with the Alpha Legion's symbol, the Hydra.

Try Asking An Alpha Legion Member If Their Primarch Is Dead:
"Is Alpharius Dead?"
"Yes"
"Then Who Are You?"
"I Am Alpharius"

It was a bad fluff idea that has quickly spiraled into an incredibly bad idea.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

It was a great idea that made the Alpha Legion stand out from the other 'sneaky' legions.

Also, I am Omegon.

I agree, I think it was a good idea too, it worked well in Legion and fits with the AL modus operandi.

Consider that the fluff may be lying to you. Do they actually think they're Alpharius or do they tell other people that?

The problem is that the Alpha Legion weren't sneaky during the Heresy.

That's why it was a bad idea.

At some point, the fluff got confused that the Alpha Legion used human double agents and unconventional tactics and then turned them into Scooby Doo Marines. Alpha Legion being arrogant jerkbags who were constantly trying to outdo themselves and impress the more veteran Legions in a bit of Little Brother Syndrome was cool.

This is not cool:

The original Alpha Legion fluff was that they turned into these evil Green Berets fomenting rebellion and leading insurrections because they had to after picking the wrong side of the Heresy out of hubris and a foolish faith in Horus. The 40K Alpha Legion was actually nothing like the 30K Alpha Legion. But that was a good thing, because the Alpha Legion had adapted to their new situation. That new situation being a scattered renegage force conducting a 10,000 year long insurgency against a vast and seemingly undefeatable foe like the Imperium. The Alpha Legion became sneaky because not being sneaky would mean they would be eraicated.

Having the Alpha Legion be like that during 30K is idiotic. They're a massive conventional force with the resources of a galactic imperium behind it. They're a frontline shock troop formation designed for galactic conquest. Everything about the Heresy Alpha Legion fluff, especially from the Black Library, is ridiculously stupid. Space Marines infiltrating other Legions like it's as easy as putting on an LL Cool J mask but really being Tom Cruise. It's all bad, and it's all become such a bad joke that it's not even a surprise, and it seems like the competition going on at TBL is to see who can write the dumbest Alpha Legion story possible and still convince people to buy books about the Alpha Legion.

Though that's probably not true, sadly. Since Graham McNeill said ‘I’m hoping that the story will twist your assumptions,’ about Seventh Serpent.

By writing a story where the Alpha Legion have somehow, impossibly impersonated another Legion, yet again, like every time we see them in a Horus Heresy novel? What was the twist? That there'd be guys pretending to be Alpha Legionnaires? So we can take what's already laughably stupid and make it bad comedy?

I was a big fan of the Alpha Legion back in the old days. Had a small Alpha Legion army. But they're absolutely ruined now.

^ Have you read the AL fluff from Extermination? It's pretty damn excellent.

I like the AL stuff from BL but I really like the legion, and the way they fight. I don't much care how they used to be in what I can assume is an old Index Astartes or maybe even earlier because that stuff is before I started and frankly doesn't apply anymore. Just my opinion and I see why people don't like them, but I think they're awesome.

Alpha Legion's still fine in 40K, it's just in 30K where they fluff went into a wacky direction. Also, have you read The Long Games at Carcharias?

In a Trayzn pokeball

Because primarchs are really important and spreading confusion is a good tactic, and the Alpha legion must make chaos win to save mankind, since they are the most loyal marines.
It works thus, Alpharius sees somehow that the 4 Chaos Gods will make sure Horus doesn't win, because if chaos wins and humanity dies out, then all the emotions disappear and the chaos gos will be left really weak and with no playthings, eventually fading away. Therefore to save humanity, the imperium must lose, to ultimately defeat chaos. So the Alpha legion try and tip the balance by joining Horus, but the Chaos Gods have their way, Horus loses and 10 millennia on they are having the time of their lives.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Some of the original AL fluff had them as fairly sneaky and covert ops too.

So there's definitely a basis for it.

LEGION added in the secret twin, and expanded on the IA article for a nice twist on the 'everyone is Alpharius' thing.

Overall, the 'regular' Legionaries don't believe they are Alpharius.

They are, however, Alpharius.
