Ahem....

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-30773297

An American terrorism commentator speaking on Fox News has been forced to apologise for describing Birmingham as a "Muslim-only city" where non-Muslims "don't go in".

Steven Emerson told the channel that in London "Muslim religious police" beat "anyone who doesn't dress according to Muslim, religious Muslim attire".

He later issued an apology for his "terrible error".

But many on social media have been ridiculing his comments.

One claimed: "Birmingham's refuse collectors are all Bin Laden."

Another tweet said: "As someone born and raised in Birmingham, I must admit there was a pressure to read the Kerrang."

"I was supposed to go to Birmingham last week but I forgot my passport," said one tweeter.

'No excuse'
His comments about Birmingham and London led to many reacting on hashtag #FoxNewsFacts.

Some accused him on his investigative website of "speaking nonsense" and called his claims "utter rubbish".

Emerson, who founded a group called The Investigative Project on Terrorism, was giving his perspective on the terror attacks in France to Fox presenter Jeanine Pirro.

A witness called to testify to at least one Congressional committee, he later apologised and has offered to make a donation to Birmingham Children's Hospital.

"I have clearly made a terrible error for which I am deeply sorry. My comments about Birmingham were totally in error."

He said he would be issuing an apology on his website for "this comment about the beautiful city of Birmingham".

"I do not intend to justify or mitigate my mistake by stating that I had relied on other sources because I should have been much more careful.

"There was no excuse for making this mistake and I owe an apology to every resident of Birmingham."

I love experts like this, making my adopted city seem so hardcore.

Plenty of reasons not to go into Brum, but I don't think it being "Muslims-only" is chief amongst them

When you see this as the start of a sentence it is almost guaranteed that hilarity will follow.

The fact that they have "news" in the title when it is anything but.

So the Nancy Grace of counter-terrorism managed to apologize. Good for him, but he is still an opportunistic prick who manages to do little more than throw gak at the wall.

Birmingham is a diverse city

Around 42% of our residents were from an ethnic group other than White.
46.1% of Birmingham residents said they were Christian, 21.8% Muslim and 19.3% had no religion.
22% of our residents were born outside the UK, compared with 14% in England and 11% in the West Midlands region.

It depends on who you ask or your source I think.

For the layman those 'muzzas' are everywhere.

I think the expert check the Daily Mail for his facts. Or, he just says absurd thing for a dare.

There has been a few incidents involving "Muslim religious police" -

Three members of a so-called 'Muslim Patrol' were today jailed at the Old Bailey for repeatedly trying to enforce Sharia law in East London.
Jordan Horner and another Islamic extremist told one couple they could not hold hands while walking down the street, because it was in a 'Muslim area'.
The radicals also attacked a group of men drinking in the road, and told a woman she would face 'hell fire' because of the way she was dressed.

Sounds like that group of people who stand around in Liverpool town centre with a PA system giving it all hell fire and damnation.

They have not attacked anybody though, but they are very annoying.

If I wanted to be told I had to let Jesus in to my life I'd go to church. (Oh, yeah, that bunch is Christian, not Muslim, but it adds up to pretty much the same thing).

Out of all the perfectly valid, reasonable explanations as to why nobody makes the conscious decision to go to Birmingham that he had to choose from, he manages to get one of the few that don't apply.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

I assume that right in front of them there was some sort of musical street performer who turned up their amps and drowned them out? There's a few soapbox style preachers about the city center here every now and then who for some reason (or rather the same reason) haunt the same places as musicians. Some jazz certainly offsets being told you're going to hell (...and shuts those idiots up more effectively than it does someone walking up to them and presenting a rational counter argument). =P

Ah, on topic I would say my knowledge of Birmingham extends as far as the sketches SMTV Live used to do back in the early 2000s. Saturday morning Tv in the UK people...

On the flip side, is there any truth to this? Are there really shariah "police" there? WTF is that?

The "Sharia Police" is probably as prevalent as the "Race Police" here in Oklahoma: the occasional person shaking their head and giving you a dirty look for mixing up the races when you hold hands with your wife and parade your mixed-race child around.

If by Sharia police you mean the extremist Muslim types yes. There are groups of Muslim guys who go out of their way to berate people for not living the right way. i.e. wearing "revealing" clothes , drinking etc etc. There was even a news report on the subject.
