I don't understand why Assault Marines are used over Vanguard Vets? Apologies if this is obvious and I'm being an "idiot"
For 110 points you can get
5 AM, Vet Captain + MB and 2 flamers
For 115 points yo can get
5 VV + MB
Are 2 flamers and 5 points........worth 4 attacks&heroic intervention?
Plus you can add more power weapons if you wanted to.
Am I missing something here?
Thanks in advance

Assault marines are not veteran space marines. That's all there is to it.
Or do you simply mean game terms?
In that case, assault marines are cheaper, are fast attack, while vanguard are elite and expensive.

I dig how in a setting where giant, muscled fungus men ride Mad Max cars and use their own teeth as currency, the concept of little engineering dudes with beards was considered a step too far down the aisle of silliness. ADB |

Most people are using the vets in my play groups. Very few people use assault marines now and really not that many used them in the past.
However, imo in the past I found that people that did use assualt marines and used them properly gave their SM armies a lot more tactical flexibility beyond my dudes can take more hits than your dudes can. Assault marines used properly were more like I am removing you from the board rather than I will win eventually due to rolls.

I'd use a combi-melta over an infernus pistol.

Assault Marines are cheaper, primarily. A Vanguard Veteran is 5ppm more expensive than an Assault Marine for +1A, +1Ld, and Heroic Intervention. If you're fighting harder targets the Vanguard Veterans can hit harder as one squad, but if you're fighting, say, Tau, where the Vanguard Veterans' extra hitting power is overkill the Assault Marines do the same job for fewer points.

tghey also occupy differnt FOC slots so depending on your list build you might find that you need those elite slots for something else. while you may find you have some left over FA spots.

Which codex is that? I only have the space marine codex - and the army we (son and I) are painting is UMarines (apologies at the lack of originality...but it's a "first army").
In reply to the first poster - I am aware they are "more expensive" but tried to do a rough comparison of what 110 /115 points would get.

Infernus pistols marks it as being from Codex Blood Angels.

Its meant for fluffy lists.
All it has going for it is that it is fast. (vanilla)
At best they move up a unguarded flank or deep strike and harrass. dont actually expect them to do anything.

BA.
The advantage to Assault Marines is getting more bodies cheaper; the flamers are almost irrelevant.
