Hey guys,
Not sure if many remember this mag, but for a lot of gamers from the UK who are now in their 30's and 40's this mag was an essential buy back in the day. It hasn't been a printed magazine for some time, but the online site was still going for some years and amongst the online mags was one of the better ones. Sadly, it looks to have fallen victim to Future Publishing's cuts and will soon cease.
Here is the link to the site
http://www.computerandvideogames.com/483033/features/messages-from-the-editors/
There are messages there from previous editors, Julian 'Jaz' Rignall, and Paul Davies amongst others.
The magazine spawned a number of offshoots, including my personal favourite Mean Machine, which started life as a pull-out from C&VG, and which itself went on to start the official Nintendo and now defunct official Sega magazine.
I was once lucky enough to meet a few guys from the mag; Ed Lomas and Tom Guise, at Glastonbury festival (I think in 96 or 97), although wasn't of 'sound mind' at the time - I did get a mention in the magazine the next month which was kind of funny!
Have to be honest, this mag (along with White Dwarf) was my 'Bible' back when I was a child and teenager. Very sad to finally see it finally finishing, but as said all good things have to end and it's a shame in this case that it's yet another piece of quality journalism, with a wonderful legacy, being left by the wayside.
Anyway, place to post your comments and memories about C&VG and the other mags that came from it.

Meh. Print magazines have been dying for a long time now and 2014 showed that video game "journalism" in general is pretty worthless.
I still have fond memories of old, quality magazines such as Nintendo Power (still own one!), but nowadays, with the internet, print is a dying art.

It may mean nothing at all to you, but it means a lot to me and I'm sure some others here also.
This thread was to let people know that hadn't heard and hopefully a discussion about the mag and its offshoots.

@Pacific: I love your avatar. I always find the 'terminator 2' scene where john connor rides the motorcycle with arnold to be like every 90's kid's dream.
@Sigvatr: Gaming reviewers sucked and have for a while. Remember back during the kane and lynch review where they were paid to say good things and a reviewer struck out. The fact he was fired for it has to show they suck in general. All bought and paid for. What a joke.

I read Mean Machine back in the day. They used to get people do send in photos of themselves so they could insult them.
|
“Good people are quick to help others in need, without hesitation or requiring proof the need is genuine. The wicked will believe they are fighting for good, but when others are in need they’ll be reluctant to help, withholding compassion until they see proof of that need. And yet Evil is quick to condemn, vilify and attack. For Evil, proof isn’t needed to bring harm, only hatred and a belief in the cause.” |

Haha yes, Mean Yob. "You're as funny as a leper in a wind tunnel" etc. etc.
There's actually a great fan site for Mean Machines, everything from the magazine in there. Well worth a look, must have taken a lot of work for whoever did it.

I think so, though later it was floppy disks, and then later it was cds/dvds.

C&VG,and to some extent Mean Machines, were essential purchases for me growing up. Reading some of those old reviews still makes me smile. And it's nice to see the prices still haven't changed. £34.99 for Master Blaster on the NES?! Woah....
I've not bought it for years, nor have I visited the site. My magazine of choice is now Games tm, but it's still nice to re read them occasionally. In the same way that it's nice to watch old episodes of GamesMaster and the brilliantly awkward astronomer dude (whose name escapes me ) saying things like "press up, A,C,C,down and start". Along with the effervescent Dominic Diamond, it was a good watch when I were but a nipper..

I remember buying some Mean Machines Sega way way back for an arm and a leg. The humour in those things was insane, especially compared to the dull German magazines that never went beyond doing the most basic stuff. Better days.

A bit of a shame. To be honest, i hadn't read the magazine for years. I only very occasionally pick up any video game magazine these days. But C&VG was a staple purchase for me throughout the mid 90s 32bit era as I tossed and turned then eventually flipped from my beloved Saturn to a PS1. Cheaper than the other magazines and considerably better. Loved it.
For a long time before that it was Mean Machines Sega for me. Another great magazine. Huge and really well designed.
The 90s were good.

Interestingly the site still seems to be running - wonder if Future had some leftover server/domain time?

Dominic Diamond steadily become more and more risqué as the show progressed, by the end it was very rare that a show didn't have a raft of double entendres and some female celeb riding that horse arcade game in tight trousers. Was tremendously funny though, I found a disk the other day (that I think was given away with the Gamesmaster magazine) that featured the last ever show. Made rather sad watching!
Also funny that Dexter Flexter helmed one series (I think the second one) but then went on to do some roles in Hollywood, in Band of Brothers amongst other things.
