I'll admit I laughed at this.

I'd imagine that looking at GW's sales figures would give us a very vague idea of how many of us are out there.

Let me be the first person in this thread to give you a serious answer:

about 10 million people who have - ever - played warhammer.

As for active players today - I'd say about 1-2 million

You could look at their annual report and start to come up with an idea. GW revenue last year was ~$186,000,000. So if you think each customer spent ~$100 per year on GW stuff that would put the number at 1.86 million players. Then adjust your number for what you think is more realistic for what a person might spend. Then also adjust for the fact perhaps not all revenue comes from players.

I would say factoring in those things you might be able to say 1.5 million players (max.) is a reasonable number. Of course this is just a wild guess.

I spent much more than $100 on GW stuff last year and I don't even earn much, I wager people spend a lot more than that a year.

Also a significant portion of Gws revenue comes from licensing and royalties iirc.

more than you think is my answer, I said something similar in another thread but in the UK alone 40k is very very prevalent, its almost a sub culture and I have met people from so many walks of life, its quite suprising.

one time I was walking through central London with my case on my way to a mates house, couple of hood rats approached me and I thought (admittedly rather unfairly) that I was gonna get mugged, "that wahammer bruv" is what I got and "yeah them elder are cool", then we had a chat, very shocking, also one of my mates I play often is a county court judge, we have 2 coppers, a plumber etc.
its one of the reason I like the game, it brings people together from all walks.

I would say that estimate is way off.
I imagine the average GW player spends more like a £500 a year. Based on no fact just a gut feeling and the people who join and leave (particularly flavour of the month) skew the sales massively.

I would say 40k players in at most in the hundred thousands at any given time. I don't think it breaks a million.

Again not based on facts/figures just a hunch. I imagine most people are too lazy to invest the time and effort to really invest as more than a passing fad.

Yeah, I said 1.5million MAX. I suspect $100 a year is probably low for a lot of people, but I don't spend much more than that. I was just giving the OP something to work from, since nobody had yet given any kind of realistic answer. I suspect probably a more realistic number once you factor in revenue from licenses and stuff is probably 250,000, 40K players worldwide. Who knows really it is all guessing without out a bunch more information.

I would say its a bit more, maybe 2.5 million tops. Not everybody spends money directly with GW. If you buy from an independent retailer, GW is only getting about 60% of that. On top of that, the 2nd hand market takes a large chunk of sales from GW. Finally, there are those like me who probably only bought the 7th edition rules last year ($80 from an independent retailer, so they got $48 from me.)

Maybe 6 or 7 considering how GW jacks up prices each year.

Don't forget ebay, a lot of people buy things from there on the cheap and none of it goes to GW.

I'd say 1.5, maybe 2 million.

On the whole money-judging thing. I buy ALL my Warhammer 40k 2nd-hand on Ebay. I imagine there are more than few like me out there

My guess is no more than 3 Million

To give a serious response:
It is impossible to say how many players there are, as we don't know if someone is an actual Warhammer 40k player or just an Alpha Legion operative that has infiltrated the 40k playerbase to spy on us.
Maybe there are no 40k players at all, and everyone is an Alpha Legion spy that doesn't know the others are too?
