On moon miranda.

Yeah, they could have cut out a ton of the angsty teenage existential stuff and long dramatic shots of nothing happening and probably taken five episodes out of the total length and sacrificed none of the plot or impact of the show, or maybe had time to try and fill out the plot in something other than the last 20 mins of the series

But not a terrible watch, it was pretty at least.

I should rewatch NGE, at least it had a reason for its awkard ending (budget issues) that they then fixed with a movie.

Waiting impatiently for the next episode of Jojo Duwang is- I mean Diamond is Unbreakable.
Also noticed there was a new Gundam anime on Crunchyroll. Gundam Unicorn 0096 I think it was called? Always hoped to get into it, so I'm hoping it winds up being good. First episode was awful, but the second one was decent, so I'm feeling a bit optimistic.
There's also a Phoenix Wright anime. It's actually not too bad so far.

So...NGE begins to fall apart after episode 20.
Its apparent that Gainax was running of money, as they started to pad the episodes out with psychological probing of the main characters, which featured...let's say abstract animation, with repeated scenes.
I don't mind it per se, as I still find it interesting, but it does feel a bit tedious to watch, like during Asuka's mind probing where it repeats that sequence about her identity like 3-4 times.

I do appreciate that they tried to do something with what limited resources they had, but it still felt a bit awkward.

Being that I am a fan of the show as well, I do agree that their quality began to go down from a lack of a budget and the last six episodes suffered because of it. But it does not help the studio got a little over-ambitious with the animation of the battle scenes (which are still pretty damn good in my opinion), hence I can assume most of the money went towards that. I am almost tempted to tell people to skip episodes 25-26 and watch EoE which gives a better indication what is truly going on and conveys it much better in my opinion.

Gundam 0096 is a television reedit of Gundam Unicorn OVA. It does kind of require a little knowledge of the events of Mobile Suit Gubdam, Mobile Suit Gundam Zeta, Double Zeta, and Char's Counterattack. But they do a decent job of explaining what the major events are.

Ya the series is insanely good, at least the OVA was. Hopping they add stuff to it like with the BreakBlade ova. Also there's Gundam Thunderbolt out, it's super awesome as well

Yeah, the first time watching it was like "wtf is going on...", and it *kinda* works as a sub-par psychological twister ending, but man there is zero reason to watch those episodes again, when they hit the "We ran out of money" point, just put the movie on and pretend the last few episodes don't exist...because they really don't

That said, it was amusing looking at the DVD box in stores when they would try to play it off as the directors "amazing genius thriller ending"...

Aye, just skip the last bit and go straight to EoE, no reason to bother with the ending TV episodes

Holy crap, I just realised how heavily Aru from Mirai Nikki is inspired by Kaworu.

If Yuki Amano is a Shinji expy, then Aru is a Kaworu expy, right down to the homoeroticism.
I keep expecting "yaranaika" to be uttered.

I do like episode 24, its one of the best of the series. The sequence with beethoven near the end was incredible, though I felt the bit where Eva 01 is holding Kaworu while Beethoven is playing in the background went on for too long; it killed the mood a bit.
But there's a plot hole

Spoiler:
If Seele wants 3rd contact to happen, and for Angels to inherit the Earth, why form Nerv? Why not just let it happen? Or was it all a lie to get Kaworu to serve them, as he was surprised that it was Lilith that he was supposed to make contact with?

Spoiler:
It has been a while since I watched the show some of the details will evade me, but Seele essentially Human Instrumentality(Third Impact) on their terms and needed the angel eliminated because of that. Along with that, the Humans were the Angels born under Liltih and Adam so hence why Rei was created between a mix of Human and Angel DNA in order to accomplish that goal.

Spoiler:
Ah, so Rei was created under orders of Seele to act as a trigger for Human Instrumentality, but seeing as Rei belongs to Gendo, they tried to get a real Angel to do it then, under the pretext that they believe angels should inherit the earth, when really Seele wants to be god as well? How would that work though? Wouldn't Kaworu become god?

Also, is it customary for husbands to take the last names of their wives in Japan? Ikari was Yui's family name, and Gendo was originally Gendo Rokubunji.

Anyone else following Joker Game? I'm enjoying it. Plots within plots. Its pretty much "JUST AS PLANNED" the anime. Tzeentch's no1 show.

Spoiler:
Not quite, since Gendo was just selfish and wanted his wife back and Seele only wanted Instrumentality for themselves while everyone died. Then Rei comes along and says 'Nope, screw you guys, I am taking over' and then you see Rei turn everyone into orange juice and gave Shinji control of Instrumentality. Probably not explaining it as well, but it has been a while since I have seen the show in full. And my memory slightly escapes me.

And yeah, I think it is somewhat customary that the husband does take the surname of the wives. Need to check into that.

Saw the last two episodes of NGE. Not as bad as I was expecting. I've seen worse. The last episode wasn't great, but it wasn't terrible.

Episode 25 was better, as it hinted to what was going on in the real world, outside of god-shinji's mind. It was apparent that he was peeking into everyone's souls when they were tang.

I did see EoE a long time ago, but I didn't like it that much; the ending was too open for my liking, and it was apparent that Anno had an axe to grind with the fanbase and his own creation.

Anyway, now off to Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, an anime about a suicidal eternally pessimistic teacher who carries a noose around, and is put in charge of a class full of misfits.
Shenanigans ahoy.
8 minutes in and I love this show already. Its the best thing to watch after NGE. Its so dark, yet so funny.

So, Paramount Pictures has a YouTube channel where they've released a bunch of movies that you can watch for free on their channel.

One of the films they released today is Satoshi Kon's Millennium Actress, which so far, is a fantastic film. it's very surreal in how it blends the present day characters with the past, and the movies the actress starred in.

Edit: Gorram was that good. very very good movie, a bit of a tearjerker, but Satoshi Kon really knows how to play with emotions.

We could always keep the mega thread around (kinda like the "what game are you playing now" thread in Video Games). Would be cool though now that we have the ability to have threads on specific animes. We can tag with with [SPOILERS] or some such, and avoid cluttering up the super thread with discussions about ongoing series that some member might not be caught up on

My only worry is that we would spread the discussion out and it would just be like three of us discussing some moe show that most of Geek Media doesn't care for.

The benefit is that other Dakkanauts might come across a show that they find worthwhile and start watching it.

The question becomes 1) What show gets the first nod to its own thread? Should it be an older show that is pretty easy to find and we can do a Dakka rewatch of it to test out the Show Threads?

Edit: Hotsauce, glad you are finding Kekkai Sensen funny. It's a solid show, and you're lucky that you don't have to wait 3 months for the final episode to come out.

That could be fun. I've been re-watching Bleach, and a dedicated thread for that might be a good idea- to mayb give people ideas of which are the arcs to skip (and which episodes to do so with).

Or maybe the 'Dakka Darling' shows that people all seemed to like...

Yeah. I'd say in general there's maybe four or five main posters in this thread like you and hotsauce, and then maybe a dozen or more posters like me who hop in and out. Certainly, we don't want to flood Geek media with threads about every new anime in the Summer lineup. I think posters can just use their best judgement. It's not like there's a thread here for every single tv show people are watching. General anime talk could just stay here, and if a thread pops up on an anime it'll either live or die based on its own interest.

Out of curiosity, is anyone watching "Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress"? I kinda dropped everything this season until I was told how good this was, and boy, they were NOT kidding. This anime is flippin' amazing, binged the whole available 6 episodes when I decided to give the first ep a look

Well, truth be told, it's amazing if you are into action-oriented, post-apocalyptic anime.

If you are up to a tiny bit of spoilers for the 2nd ep, here's a sample of the amazing action (and music! Even the OST is sexy)
