Reading volume 8 in Sword art online light novels. This one has the story about supposed in-town player killing. First time differences between book and anime versions jumped out. Generally there's not been huge differences but in this time anime cut quite a lot out. Lots of background information, Heathcliff parts were completely cut down(including his funny wannabe Gandalf/Jedi/other mysterious guide-like hint toward final solution). Also good thing this story wasn't in 1st book or ending could have gotten "bit" spoiled for acute readers...

Then the encounter with laughing coffin was shortened a lot. Not even any mention that the trio contained leader of said guild. And Grimlock...In anime he just admitted what he did right off the bat. In book he tried to deny but got beaten by evidence forcing him to finally admit.

Quite surprised. There been small changes here and there before obviously but generally biggest change has been order of stories rather than story itself.

Good thing I read this. Made ending more sensible, answered question that had been bugging me(why werent' laughing coffin members charged with murder in real life after game was cleared...) and more scenes for Heathcliff. I like that guy!

Morning all... I hope this is the right place to post this - seems it...

My daughter is getting bang into anime and keeps asking me to suggest things for her to watch, but (I'm sorry!!) I've never been a huge anime fan so I am clueless...

I'm hoping y'all might be able to suggest some age appropriate anime movies/series that she could watch (she's 11)... She's watched Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Nausicaa etc, so things in that vein would be ideal.

Cheers!

Hard to know her preferences but let's see. I assume you have already covered entire Ghibli production since that would fit the bill?

I'm out of touch with new stuff so these might be tough to find...

Usagi drop
Hikaru no go(subject might not be of interest to her though)
Folktales from japan
Hanasaku Iroha ~Blossoms for Tomorrow~
k-on
Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica <- not quite yet I think but in few years could be. Bit dark story at times and has characters dying.
nichijo(every day life)
melancholy of suzumiya haruhi(maybe wait few years. rated pg13)
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
toradora(pg13 though can't really understand why)

Just wait......

My watch list in order of priority;

Alderaminn the Sky - really like the vibe and the plot. Looking forward to the forshadowed match up between the "lazy" and "unsleeping" geniuses in the next episode.
Mob Psycho 100 - yeah I know this is turning into a bit of a One Punch Man clone, but I can't help but love the quiet, underestimated, underdog story line
Re:Zero - Got lots of issues with this show, but can't help but watch the latest episode as soon as it goes up
Fate/Kaleid Liner PRISMA ILLYA - magical girl with a twist and of course just a sucker for the whole Fate/ universe
New Game - so much slice of life.....
Sweetness and Lightening - so much feels
Qualidea Code
Taboo Tattoo
Food Wars! - Ep. 24 lost me a bit and kind of a let down after the conclusion of the Autumn Elections
Berserk - just hard to get through the CGI style

On the list to watch but haven't gotten to

Spoiler:
My heart can't take too much more of this. The "I want mommy's" line really hit me.

Honestly, I'm not 100% it's on purpose, but the way they draw the dad's face makes me a bit emotional. It's really the eyes. More than anything, he looks like somebody who is tired from trying to keep everything going well, and himself going.

Just to clarify: Archroy, Lord of Deeds' list was NOT for you- some of those shows are very much not appropriate for most 11 year olds.

A lot of the Magical Girl shows would probably be appropriate, though- and though there's some catering to 'girl stuff', there's also a lot of good storytelling and action in them- as shown by the number of people here who watch/watched Sailor Moon. But avoid some of them- Utena, for one- Lyrical Nanoha's first season starts out sweet and light, but the series quickly gets very, very heavy and rather violent, so hold off on that one for a few years.

Cardcaptor Sakura should be a good one. Tenchi Muyo! and the others in that 'series' (a couple OVAs and some disconnected retellings- all good, though) are a little raunchy, but all in good fun. Same with Ranma 1/2 and Urusei Yatsura- the occasional boob shot (this is Japan, after all) but nothing too out there. Inuyasha gets violent at times, but is mostly a love story. One Piece has a lot of cartoon violence (and some actual violence as well, now that I think about it) but it's setting appropriate, and long enough that she'll be older before you get to the harder stuff. Same with Fairy Tale (from the same creator).

Lucky Star might be good, along with any other Moe anime- those tend to be 'school life drama' style.

I'd recommend Glass Reflections YouTube channel for good reviews of series- he's done a lot of them, so you might be able to find out more about some titles before recommending them to your daughter. One he reviewed was Squid Girl, which might be a good one.

Another place would be CrunchyRoll, if you don't use that already- anything in the Slice of Life, Sports or Comedy category should be alright.

OH! Ouran High Host Club is hilarious. She might like that one, and you might too.

Squid girl is adorable. It's actually a kids show, so it would work well. There's some adult themes, but in a pixar "the parents know" sort of way.

I think the phrase "do your own research" fits well here. Different people will have different ideas of what is acceptable, as will different cultures. Pay attention to ratings, all that jazz.

Are you refering to past 4th book? Is that even anime'ized?

Anime I watched ended basically Daikichi coming to grips with being father and deciding it's not sacrifice anymore. In 4th book last picture IIRC was pic of Rin smiling with missing front tooth.

Oh dear god yes please do not take my list as a recommendation for anyone under 16. Sorry for any confusion. Though some of the shows, e.g sweetness and lightening, would be appropriate.

As others have side, slice of life genre is full of shows that will probably be okay, such as New Game....but be careful as you probably know, fan service shows up in the darndest places and sometimes the slice of life shows venture into very adult subject matter (e.g. sex, alcohol, etc.)

Another good one that my kids when they were younger really liked was Mushi-shi

Your lie in April is a good recent one that I think would be good for tween/young teens.

Of course for any budding anime fan I think the Hayao Miyazaki films are a must watch, with Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and Castle in the Sky being among my favorites.

As others of mentioned, crunchy roll is a great site to browse a variety of shows, filtering by genre and you can watch for free if you can put up with ads and on the simulcasts the broadcast delay.

Well he was asking anime and not manga so as long as that's followed usagi drop is safe. Agreed on volumes 5-8. Weird ending. Should have ended on book 4.

If manga is also fine and not just anime yotsuba & is similar slice of life(and if I had to recommend manga for beginner japanese student would incidentally rank pretty high. Very easy to read japanese most of the time. Of course you can read it in english as welll. Just a sidenote)

But in anime form weirdest concept is idea of 70 odd guy having kindergarden daughter. If the 11 year old doesn't go nuts over that idea it's sweet slice of life anime. Scariest part would be the funeral in the first episode.

Ads have come pretty ridiculous though. One episode I had like 4 times ads came up and in one of the 4 times same add repeated like 6 times IN A ROW. Sheesh.

I used to watch by crunchyroll and even was subscribed but this is turning me off. And no subscribing again isn't much of a solution because out of principle I'm on side that this won't make me feel like paying them. There's some sort of limit to reasonable adds and having same bible related finnish ad coming up 6 times in a row IS NOT reasonable. So I rather skip entire site.

Ads I can live with. I don't use adblock etc either. But there should be some sensibility in the amount of ads.

What's interesting is that I don't use Adblock, but either my browsers or my antivirus automatically do that for those most annoying 'autoplay' ads anyways. I've not actively done anything to avoid ads (I'm all for paying for my stuff, even if it's in the form of watching an ad) but they've sort of... stopped showing up for me.

It could be because some ads were used to deliver malware.

If you want a good family show that everyone can genuinely enjoy, I recommend Dennou Coil. It's like if Studio Ghibli did cyberpunk. It's also absolutely hilarious at times.

You've got a group of kids enjoying the new trend of a kind of internet overlaid over everything and visible through special goggles and generally messing with bugs, finding lost virtual pets and being at the forefront of a world that most of the older generations don't pay much mind to. Obviously they stumble into stranger things but one of the great things about the show is that the level of danger they're actually in is very appropriate. The authorities can mess with their toys but aren't going to hurt anyone. So go find that and give it a go.

Eureka7 is also very good and an excellent robot action show. Great soundtrack, too. Maybe slightly more young adult than tween but it's worth checking out.

For something that's on the more wholesome end of the scale, Kimi ni Todoke is pretty much the best shoujo highschool romance/drama show. It's about a gloomy girl who slowly gains friends and opens up as she starts her first year of high school. It's the most extremely innocent thing I've watched. The main character is the very definition of "pure-hearted" and the rest of the cast are all nice people.

So those are three very different recommendations that I believe will work for an 11-year-old girl. This is without getting into old classics like Revolutionary Girl Utena or newer, niche comedies like Astro Fighter Sunred.

Oh man, Eureka 7 is amazing. And it's pretty much the definition of bildungsroman, or Coming-of-Age story. It's got heavy themes to it, but I think it's probably perfect for that age. Male protagonist with a female love-interest/co-protagonist, and a very characterful supporting cast.

on the forum. Obviously

So I read the berserk manga.
Its pretty good, and there's a lot of arcs that haven't been animated. Though that may be because said arcs are pretty gorey and disturbing. The thing I noticed about the manga series is that it (slightly) becomes less grim later on, though there is still a feeling that things might go wrong any moment

Spoiler:
Does anyone else think that Griffith is going to sacrifice the population of his new city to acquire even more power? I mean, he is a Godhand now, and those guys are donkey-caves. I really hope not, because I happen to like Luca :(
I keep having this feeling that at the end of one of the chapters it will show a bird eye's view of Falconia, and it reveals that the city plan looks like a Brand of Sacrifice
