A while ago I decided to convert and collect a Genestealer Cult (as a "counts as" army, using the Astra Militarum codex with Tyranid allies). My goal is to have fun converting and painting some bizarre creatures and vehicles, and to build an army that is fun to play with. AM and Tyranids are only "Come the Apocalypse"-allies, so it's not an optimal situation -but I like to have the odds against me when I play (both in tabletop games and video games).

ARMY LIST CONSIDERATIONS

Loves <3

I love converting infantry, so there will be a lot of grunts. I also like the gruesome aspect of hordes of little guys being herded towards the enemy guns.

The Leman Russ is a lovely tank with a lot of personality -and who doesn't like dumping S8 AP3 Large Blasts explosions on Chaos Marines?

Superheavy Tanks and Imperial Knights makes me all warm and fuzzy inside, I've bought a Knight (the standard GW one) and a Baneblade (I'll magnetize it so that it can be fielded as a Hellhammer too)

Flyers add a little "game within the game" due to their huge minimum moves when zooming and the difficulty groundforces have with hitting them. I bought a Valkyrie and a convertion kit to turn it into Vendetta -a fine anti-tank aircraft with 3 TL Lascannons. In the first part of the game the Valkyries will probably spend their time plinking enemy flyers out of the sky -most flyers have little chance against three S9 shots, each with a 75% chance of hitting. But I need to shoot FIRST.

Dislikes :(

I'm not a fan of sending huge hordes into assaults, I had enough of those playing Orks. I don't find them aesthetically pleasing, and a bit overwhelming. The assaults I'll get into voluntarily will consist of Lictors leaping at weak units, or Monstrous Creatures crushing well-armored foes.

WORKS IN PROGRESS

AM:
Infantry Squad #1
Leman Russ (various weapon options)
Leman Russ Battle tank
Aegis Defence Line

Tyranids:
Carnifex (magnetized)
Tyrannocyte (magnetized)

FINISHED:

Chimera (magnetized)
Primaris Psyker
2 Guardsmen

AND NOW: THE PICS

I finished painting this baby a few days ago. The rust was complicated to make, but fun.

I'm not sure what to think. Looks almost cgi because of background. Cool concept for sure.

I didn't Photoshop the mini, I just added the snowy background. Thank you for the compliments, here are some closeups:

And finally the ugly guy himself:

The rust was painted in the following way:
1: First the metal was given a wash of Agrax Earthshade (Citadel)
2: Spots and stripes were made with several layers of Carroburg Crimson (Citadel)
3: A couple of layers of Bloodletter (Citadel), slightly bigger than the carroburg crimson spots
4: I then used an old brush to apply nasty, crusty spots of Rust Effect (Modelmates)
5: Finally I drybrushed the crust of the Rust Effect spots with Ryza Rust (Citadel), and added streaks of watered down ryza rust to the rust stripes.

The trick is to remember that rust will form where water will flow and pool, especially around rivets.

Really, really nice. You don't see a lot of Genestealer Cult stuff, and I always appreciate it when people give them some love. I love the conversion on the gunner and the weathering is fantastic.

Wow, beautiful mini. I love the color choices and the subtle effects you applied to the different surfaces. Not to mention the brilliant conversion work to both the Chimera and pilot. This is the type of model I'd love to see in person, because I think the camera lens isn't true to the subject. Awesome work!

Epic model. Not a fan of the tentacles coming out the back. Not because they look bad, just that they are going to give me nightmares.

On another note, how did you make that flag?

Very Grimdark! I really like it, though oddly I like the tentacles the least since I'm not sure what would be connected to them. : ) The closeups are really nice and I like the commander quite a bit.

Jim> Thank you The banner is from a Skaven Doomwheel, I bought from an online bitz seller. The bronze figure on top of it is a Forgeworld Tyranid Ripper, undercoated with Mournfang Brown, then painted Gehenna's Gold and given a wash of Agrax Earthshade (and a little Nihilakh Oxide in the cracks and joints). I painted the banner Moot Green and gradually built up layers of Waywatcher Green to make the lower areas darker.

Gorgeous. I really love the Cult stuff.

We were once so close to heaven, St. Peter came out and gave us medals; declaring us "The nicest of the damned".

“Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'”
