And I also see that GW has started to sell a SM captain in Terminator armour. Is he any good?
And are Termie Assault Squads any good?

Aye, they are very good. A squad of TH/SS Terminators will paste any vehicle in the game in a round of combat, and with a Storm Shield and high-S attacks are the best CC answer Space Marines have to Monstrous Creatures, or anything that can ignore armour in CC.

Better than tactical Terminator squads, certainly. They're a good tool for concentrating force and downing big targets, they're also expensive enough you will seldom have more than one and heavily reliant on whatever delivery tricks you have to get them in. They work best if you're fighting a short-ranged enemy, you're on a very dense table, and/or you have teleport homers/transports to ensure they can close, an Assault Terminator squad on foot is easily-avoided.

You could run a squad of 5 with three thunder hammer storm shields and two with lightning claws so you don't have to worry about being tar pitted to much. Run the thunder hammers up front for the 2+/3++ and then when you run into large squads you don't have to worry about not hitting back due to low initative.

They seem pretty decent to me, their only main drawback though is that they're relatively slow so you need a Land Raider to get them where you want them. That's a problem with non-winged/beast/cavalry assault units in general though.

They're good on paper, but in practice they're mediocre at best against a good opponent. They're very expensive as you basically require a Land Raider to deliver them, and they are still reasonably easy to deal with for a skilled opponent.

This. Remember, taking them in a Land Raider is usually your best bet, as deep striking them will get them killed 9 times out of 10.

Assault Terminators come in two flavors.
The first is the Lightning Claw terminator. Other units do this job better, cheaper, and usually faster. They're not *awful*, but the change of powerweapons to having individual AP values and the continued inflation of high toughness units has reduced their value.
The second is the Thunderhammer/Stormshield terminator. These guys are rock solid. They're not quite as auto-pilot-to-win as they used to be, some other units have come along that do that job better (TWC's...) and the TH/SS termi's are a bit more points than they used to be, but these guys work great and I rarely see them fail to make back their value because they're just so damn resistant to anything you throw at them, their only downfall being limited numbers so every one lost hurts. These absolutely can and do work on most tables today. They do however need a delivery system, usually a Land Raider, which has its ups and downs.

I dunno, after awhile, I feel like Assault Centurions end up being better.
1. You end up having a character to tank large shots anyway, so not having an Invul Save isn't that much a downfall.
2. There's shooting if you can't reach melee ever. At minimum size, you got 9 TL Boltgun shots. It isn't a lot, but at least it's something. Plus 5 points gives you a Melta Gun on top, and you'd be able to fire both.
3. They end up handling hordes better thanks to this. You fire those Hurricane Bolters and charge, and they can even tarpit themselves if they have to.
Granted they cannot teleport, but when you're using the same transports anyway (simply because teleportation isn't incredibly reliable), you might as well pay a little cheaper. A minimum of each squad + your chosen HQ is gonna kill most things on the charge anyway.

Haven't used them since the release of the new dex but BA termis look awesome with LCs. The advantages they have over vanilla termis are, -easy access to fnp, -+1s on the charge, +1I on the charge if using the codex formation. They can also apparently charge from scatterless deepstrike if using a particular exterminatus formation (still haven't got exterminatus myself yet so somebody please correct me if im wrong).
Of course, you'd still want some th/ss termis in there to tank ap2 hits in combat and be able to deal with 2+ saves.

The hammers are powerful weapons. If they hit somthing it will notice it. There are not many units that can shrug off a thunder hammer hit.
The sheilds provide extra durability, and if you form them up right can protect units behind them as the tip of a wedge shaped formation.

Good is definitely a stretch. Hammernators are pretty much the only terminators that aren't terrible. If you look at them after looking at the other terminators, they look awesome.
If you look at them after looking at the rest of the game, you'll still be underwhelmed.

@unit
They're not bad, just meh. If the rest of the game was meh units without crazy outliers like canoptek wraiths, riptides, flyrants, and serpents, then they'd be promoted to good by default.
As it is, the fact that all that gear is on a t4 1 wound body is what kills them (literally) at the end of the day. 30 lasgun wounds and the unit is gone.

The problem is do to the large amount of AP 2, the fact that they can't assault after Deep Striking and so just eat a full turn of fire, and they're only T4, often with no FNP. They die to Pathfinders like nobody's business.
