Subject: First flight - starting out in Xwing - now with repaint

So I've been suckered into this marvellous game
I've picked up a starter, a Y, another X and a tie advanced (my kid wants vader).
First attempt at a rebel fleet :
Ok, first flight:
Y-WING: "Dutch" Vander (23)
Proton Torps (4)
Ion Cannon Turret (5)
R2 (1)
X-WING: Biggs Darklighter (25)
Proton Torps (4)
R2-D2 (4)
X-WING: Luke Skywalker (28)
Marksmanship (3)
R5- D8 (3)
Does that work? Tag Dutch/Biggs, solo Luke?
Wondering what to pick up.next. I love Lando, so am tempted by falcon and Zs. I wonder what would best compliment starting stuff. A scum starter would let me run Zs and Ys; I also need to pick something to balance out imps but I'll probably just wait for the raider.
Any advice troops?
Cheers
Graven

You probably want to keep all of your ships near Biggs. His job is to make your other ships immune to attacks until he's dead. R2D2 is a good choice for Biggs. I'd lose the Proton Torpedoes (expensive, tricky to use, and not reliably damaging), but I realize you don't have a lot of choices of upgrades just yet.
I recommend picking up Rebel Aces, Imperial Aces and a second core set. By the time you've played a few games with that collection, you probably won't need any more advice about what to buy.
Really, I think any Rebel or Imperial expansion will give you interesting options, so pick up whatever looks like fun and it probably will be.
Scum & Villainy includes some neat stuff, but you'll probably want to pick up a Firespray and/or HWK before getting into that. Otherwise, you'll just have three factions where each has limited options.

Thanks for all your advice!
I loved Kayl in the books so Hwk/aces definitely on my list! I think the mini for the Hwk is great too but seems like a bit of a finesse ship to learn with.
I did reckon the Protons were guff, I'm coming from Trek wing where economy is key (I play Dominion and we have almost no action economy but love Torpedoes!) Z95 if only for ion Torpedoes seemed worthwhile!
As for imperial I'll let the boy choose

Experimental Interface (The YT-2400 box) and R2-F2 (starter set) tend to be a better combination for Biggs.
Have a buddy with an elite pilot talent with the 'Wingman' ability nearby, and you're pretty darn solid. - No more having your entire squad crawl along at speed 1 or 2 because Biggs needs to get rid of stress / raise a shield.

Get 2 more X-Wings (or just proxy the ships you have for training). Spend the next month or so running them as Red Squadron either naked or with an R2 mech.
Practice keeping in formation while flying around randomly placed asteroids. Work on getting them all lined up to focus fire on a single target. See how close you can get to an edge before any maneuver will cause you to fly off the board.
In short, learn to fly the basic ship first, then once you have the mechanics of the game system, start working on the named pilots special abilities; passing off tokens and actions, synergies between ships.
Then reintroduce your Y-Wing. Examine how its dial is jut different enough and how you will have to dial back on your X-Wings to keep the y-Wing in formation.
Stay away from YTs and other big turrets for at least 6 months (plan on buying one as an Episode 7 opening day gift). Turret ships are a crutch. Too many newcomers buy them first, never learn the art of the dog-fight, and wonder why their big tanky hard 1 turn, shoot 3 dice, then call on C3PO to evade tends to always get blown up in the end.

I disagree about waiting to fly the big ships.
How they fly is important to know because even if you don't plan on playing with one, there is a good chance you'll be playing against one sooner or later. In my opinion, the best way to learn what a ship's strengths and weaknesses are is to play games with it.

Thanks for the excellent advice chaps! I've been trying naked ties and X's to learn the rudiments. Coming from Trek wing, it's interesting to see how similar yet different the games are. As a Dominion player, I'm used to running big flanked by small, so it's nice to try the core pack/dog fight setup. I'm fortunate enough to have friends who have corrupted me horribly, I mean, have plenty of Xwing themselves, so I can always get a run at some of the other ships without any outlay. I can see the varied utility of another starter set. Looking idly elsewhere I like the white flip on the defender, strikes me as an interesting option, and still very tempted by z swarm. I'll let you know how I progress!

This is great advice if your goal is to hate X-Wing and put your stuff on ebay, but terrible advice if you want to enjoy the game. Don't spend months obsessively "practicing" with bland ships, especially if your goals do not include "win the world championships this year". Buy the ships you like, and use them. You can pick up things like how to maneuver well without limiting yourself to the blandest possible ships, and you'll have a lot more fun doing it.

^ Well each to their own I understand the logic of familiarising yourself utterly with the core mechanics. The sooner I can switch out those wretched proton torpedoes the better, however The ion token mechanic really appeals to me, as a kind of denial strategy, although I don't know how viable it is. I've played some more with the basics so I'm going to start nosing around another ship for each faction this weekend, I think; that gives me and the boy enough to have slightly more substantive battles.

Okay, well, after two really mental weeks at work I decided I totally deserve at least one new toy so I went for... A HWK. I could give lots of rational reasons but basically, I like the model I shall start fiddling about with it and my XXY and see where I get to!

Two X geared for damage, Roark with an Ion Cannon and a Warthog Y (Ion Cannon, R3-A2, BTLA4 title) is probably going to be a pretty popular Rebel control list now.
being able to spread your arcs and boost one ship to PS12 and shoot before the dreaded Phantom and get in some damage and/or ion/stress and then heap the rest of the pain on whoever else is in arc might make players change up their strategies to compensate.

I was thinking something along those lines. BTLA4's from the S&V starter, right? Is R3-A2 from the corvette? Automatically Appended Next Post: Transport, I mean?

Awesome!
With what I have:
HWK-290: · Roark Garnet (19)
Ion Cannon Turret (5)
Y-WING: · Horton Salm (25)
Ion Cannon Turret (5)
X-WING: Red Squadron Pilot (23)
X-WING: Red Squadron Pilot (23)
That work? Ideally I'd swap out the Hwk turret for something else, and not sure slam's any better than my available alternatives. Could gold Y to give the Xs more fight.

So, the repaint begins. Fiddly details, much fun. Wanted to make the stock y-wing into gold leader, for starters, painting in pipework etc and getting it generally grubby. I refer you to the before shot above (when I do the x-wings I'll side-by-side them). Anyway, Gold Leader:
