a hero of mine and one i was lucky enough a) to meet a few times; and b) to find that sometimes you can meet your heroes and not be disappointed. a genuinely good person, a fine talent, a writer whose work i lived for when i was a young man, and one from whom i learnt a lot. i havent been upset by the death of a famous person in many years but i'm upset now. he may not have known me but there were times in my life that his work was the only pleasure i had. RIP terry pratchett, and thank you.

Damn it, I knew he didn't have long left on the clock, but this is still terrible. I still think he had more stories to tell.

I'm glad that he went with his dignity and his mind intact, which is what was important to him - but I did shed a few tears, He'll certainly be missed.

Great guy. RIP Sir Terry.

Possibly my favourite quote from his books-

"Well, feth me,” he said. “A fething wizard. I hate fething wizards!” “You shouldn’t feth them, then,” muttered one of his henchmen, effortlessly pronouncing a row of dashes.

SADLY, SIR TERRY, IT IS TIME TO PUT THE PEN DOWN.

I'm probably not the only one who heard those last tweets read in Christopher Lee's voice....

It's a sad day. and, indeed, let us raise a glass to Sir Terry Pratchett. It's sad to be one of those left on this side without him, but as someone who's been dead three times, it's not all that bad for him.

It's certainly surprising; with over 70 books to his name and several TV adaptations I would have thought you would have at least come across the name.

Still, it's never too late to start. If you are at all a fan of Fantasy novels, satire, wonderful writing or just plain old wit, then I strongly recommend checkout out his catalogue of novels. The Diskworld ones can seem daunting at first as there's so many, but you can really jump in anywhere.

The dark behind the eyes.

Pratchett was my favourite author. His death really saddens me.

In memory, here are some of my favourite Discworld quotes:

'And there's the sign, Ridcully,' said the Dean. You have read it, I assume. You know? The sign which says "Do not, under any circumstances, open this door"?'
'Of course I've read it,' said Ridcully. 'Why d'yer think I want it opened?'
'Er...why?' said the Lecturer in Recent Runes.
'To see why they wanted it shut, of course.'†
† This exchange contains almost all you need to know about human civilisation. At least, those bits of it that are now under the sea, fenced off or still smoking.
~Hogfather

Give a man a fire and he's warm for a day, but set fire to him and he's warm for the rest of his life.
~Jingo

'Can you think of any reason why someone would kill him?'
The troll scratched his head. 'Well, 'cos dey wanted him dead, I reckon. Dat's a good reason.'
~The Fifth Elephant

Susan stopped. Of course someone would be that stupid. Some humans would do anything to see if it was possible to do it. If you put a large switch in some cave somewhere, with a sign on it saying "End-of-the-World Switch. PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH", the paint wouldn't even have time to dry.
~Thief of Time

Vimes had never got on with any game much more complex than darts. Chess in particular had always annoyed him. It was the dumb way the pawns went off and slaughtered their fellow pawns while the kings lounged about doing nothing that always got to him; if only the pawns united, maybe talked the rooks round, the whole board could've been a republic in a dozen moves.
~Thud!

She heard Nanny say: 'Beats me why they're always putting invisible runes on their doors. I mean, you pays some wizard to put invisible runes on your door, and how do you know you've got value for money?'
She heard Granny say: 'No problem there. If you can't see 'em, you know you've got proper invisible runes.'
~Witches Abroad

'I never said nothing,' said Nanny Ogg mildly.
'I know you never! I could hear you not saying anything! You've got the loudest silences I ever did hear from anyone who wasn't dead!'
~Lords and Ladies

Sometimes it's better to light a flamethrower than curse the darkness.
~Men at Arms

Lancre operated on the feudal system, which was to say, everyone feuded all the time and handed on the fight to their descendants. The chips on some shoulders had been passed down for generations.
~Carpe Jugulum

Once you were in the hands of a Grand Vizier, you were dead. Grand Viziers were always scheming megalomaniacs. It was probably in the job description: 'Are you a devious, plotting, unreliable madman? Ah, good, then you can be my most trusted adviser.'
~Interesting Times

"Has anyone got an opener for a bottle of beer? ... Has anyone got something to drink a bottle of beer out of? ... Good. Now, has anyone got a bottle of beer?"

Do you not know that a man is not dead while his name is still spoken?

I've always liked his little quips about human nature, but his humor was always great because it could switch between extremly intelligent and just being funny very quickly.

I'm going to admit to never reading his books, there were just always simply too many and I liked collecting things (this might change now that kindles exist though!).

The TV adaptions were good fun, though.

RIP PTerry.

“Life in this world,” he said, “is, as it were, a sojourn in a cave. What can we know of reality? For all we see of the true nature of existence is, shall we say, no more than bewildering and amusing shadows cast upon the inner wall of the cave by the unseen blinding light of absolute truth, from which we may or may not deduce some glimmer of veracity, and we as troglodyte seekers of wisdom can only lift our voices to the unseen and say, humbly, ‘Go on, do Deformed Rabbit . . . it’s my favorite.’ ”

I did not expect to hear this news today. Terry Pratchett's writing was unique and the world is a smaller place without him in it.

I had a book signed by him as a birthday present, which was stolen by a relative, and I always meant to see about getting him to sign another copy of the same novel (The Fifth Elephant) as a replacement, never imagined he would pass before I got the chance. May he rest in peace, he earned it.

I highly recommend you try his books, they are some of the few that actually make me laugh out loud when reading, but also really make you think sometimes. I would suggest not starting right at the beginning of the series; Colour of Magic etc. are fun, but a bit more of a sketch show spoof of fantasy tropes than a full coherent novel, so can be a bit difficult to get into. Mort is the first true novel, so would be a good starting place. And isn't that ironic given the situation...
