Subject: SM Players. How do you feel getting a new codex in a 2 year cycle?

This is IF the rumours are true. I read on BoLS that SM might get a new codex this year. So I am thinking that is what, 1 year, maybe 2 years for the life of the codex. How do you feel about it? What about the people who paid for the collectors edition codex. How do you feel that it can/may/will be invalidated?
I don't like the 2 year cycle for the BRB let alone codices. This will make me very leary in buying and starting new armies now if knowing that they can be invalidated in 2 years or less.
So what are your thoughts Dakka?

Well its definitely going to fragment the 40k gaming community even more, with some people not bothering to switch to the new edition and others who will.

If they are gonna do that then I think they need to bring down the price of the codex. I still remember the cheap little codex's from 3rd and honestly I wouldn't mind having one of those every two years.
Giant $50 codex every two years? That's a little steep.

Well, that's BOLS for you!
The original rumour came from (IIRC) Lords Of Wargaming and was more along the lines of "there'll be a new Space Marine codex before the Horus Heresy boxed game."
This in no way said it would be this year, nor was it precise over whether it was THE Space Marine book or simply A Space Marine book.
I wouldn't worry just yet.

Considering Tyranids got a new codex every single edition, and now supplements as well, not a new thing for me. Granted I haven't been back in the game to actually notice since my tenure was in the 3rd-4th change when the entire Nid line was changed, but still, I came back expecting this cost now that I play Soace Marines and other armies now too. I don't mind one bit.

IF these rumours do pan out, then my response is simple: I won't buy it. If I really feel the need or there's a new unit I want to run then I'll amend/add to my current codex, but I certainly have no intention of replacing it until the game itself gets so radically restructured that the codex is simply not compatible.
I never bought a 7th BRB, or any of the newer books, as I frankly don't see the point in replacing a perfectly functional book.

They can be justified in the sense of needing a tone down though.
Complaints about that book have been long enough and loud enough that even fingers-in-their-ears GW must have heard them.
A more moderate Eldar book would move the overall state of the game forward immeasurably IMO.

Honestly, despite the monetary issue (and for warhammer players, $50 every 2 or 2.5 years isn't that bad), I would be in favor of the more frequent updates. As for the people spending $100+ buying the limited edition books, money probably isn't an issue anyway.
I don't think a new book every two years is frequent enough to screw with tournaments or invalidate armies. Going from 6th edition to 7th edition (about 2 years) changed quite a bit about the game and people seem to be coping just fine.
Plus, this would give GW a good chance to constantly fix their errors (typos, rules clarifications, game balance) in a more reasonable time frame. I personally enjoy getting updates for an army that I play.

Did Fulgrim Just Behead Ferrus?
|
A 2-year update cycle in and of itself really isn't that big of a problem (hell, there are new Madden and Assassin's Creed games every year). The real issue would be the quality of the product. And I don't trust GW to deliver on that anymore, as their idea of updating a Codex involves adding some shiny new models nobody asked for (Centurions and the Hunter/Stalker).

I’m a little torqued with the speed that 6th BRB was replaced by 7th. I don’t mind paying for minis, they can be used regardless of edition change. But rulebooks are a lost cost. I’ll begrudgingly pay to keep up to date, but if it gets too fast, I might end up skipping an edition.

While the SM codex is certainly not internally balanced, but it's far from being that bad. The variety of SM lists doing well in tournaments is testemant to that.

Well, Space Marines 5th Edition was a wonderful book full of variety, fun and flavour... a far cry from the Graham McNeill Ultramarine fan-fic Codex of 4th and the dry cheese-book of 6th.
Few books could ever hope to stand up to it.

Part of me wishes they'd go back to something like that kind of have codices smaller and easier to transport. The hardback books look pretty and the padded out pages of fluff are fun to read once but you use them for rules information and army building. They already have whole novels of fluff so do we really need the padding? They could be half the pages they are now or less without fluff pages and random pictures of models. Smaller books with more rule updates would be fine for me since when a book causes problems we can hope soon a new book will come out and fix things instead of having to wait years for rule tweaks.

I hope not. Despite the accelerated codex update cycle we have seen so far in the past 2 years, I think - expect - the first hardcover generation of codexes to have a longer lifespan than any softcover generation so far, and softcovers usually have had a 5 year lifespan.
So any new Space Marine codex before 2018 is a cash grab.

After the 23 months of 6th ed Im not surprised by any GW underhanded trick to scam money. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw marines, tau and eldar this year.
What I am surprised about is that we got harlequins and a rumoured ad mech dex coming while the traitor legions (and their legions of fans) are doing nothing, are harlequins really more popular than chaos?

Rick Priestley said it best:
Bryan always said that if the studio ever had to mix with the manufacturing and sales part of the business it would destroy the studio. And I have to say – he wasn’t wrong there! The modern studio isn’t a studio in the same way; it isn’t a collection of artists and creatives sharing ideas and driving each other on. It’s become the promotions department of a toy company – things move on!

If it improves the bolter and makes terminators viable again, gives us Cron style formations, locks bikes into fast attack and gives us reasons to run SM tanks... I'd be fine with it.

So, things the current SM book has that, given the 7th edition precedent, the theoretical new one wouldn't have:
Lots of art
Chapter Tactics (supplements and formations instead)
an improvement in fluff over the 5th edition book (actually recognizing something other than UM, best case scenario the new book will be copy-paste)
Semblance of balance (I have never seen a centurion nor an Iron Hands biker CM, and the 7th books have been continuously monobuild or formation dependant, internal balance has only gotten worse since 7th)
What the theoretical new one will have:
A cost >$50
Questionably balanced formations, internally and externally
Lots of Ultramarine 'Eavy Metal model pictures
I think not. The only thing that could get me interested is a full on 4th edition chapter builder, which is about as likely as an across the board price reduction.

Therefore, I conclude, Valve should announce Half Life 2: Episode 3.
