Subject: blood angles with 32mm bases?
|
 |
Bounding Ultramarine Assault Trooper
|
I recently bought a blood angle tactical ls squad to add to my marine army ( i don't collect ba but i thought i could use some of the cool bits for my ultramarines) and i realised they were equipped with 32 mm bases rather than the 25mm bases the regular tactical squad which i also bought that day were equipped with. what i was wondering was is games workshop going to eventually replace all 25 mm round bases with 32mm one or is it only for the blood angles? i myself quite like the 32mm bases as i like to sculpt things on them but the thought of having to re base my ultramarine army is just well...urgh because if i did go for the 32mm bases i would want the rest of my army to have them as well. it would make sense to give them to jump infantry to add stability but i cannot see the reasoning for average infantry apart from allowing people like myself to add more scenery to the bases of the models
does anyone know whether or not it is going to be a take over of larger basses or is it confined to the blood angles tactical squad, if it is a take over (which i think so because forge world has started doing them as well now) what does that mean for other base sizes such as termie bases which are 40mm, will they become larger as well. furthermore what about the other miniatures which use 25mm bases like the imperial guard or tyranids, will, they also get larger bases or is it just for the superhuman space marines, will the bike bases get bigger as well to fit in or will they remain there minimalistic size.

The intitial rumour was that all 25mm bases were going to eventually transition to 32mm
but
So far all the new marine releases seem to have come with them as have necrons
but harlequins stuck with the 25mm (and I think something else has as well) so it looks like at least some lines will remain on the 25mm at least for now (I can't see guard stepping up either)
no word or speculation on changes to bike bases that I've seen as yet

Does seem to be the case that from now on a lot of models will be on the larger bases.
At the recent HH Weekender Forgeworld were asked about it and seemed to indicate that they too will be using the larger bases but they won't be rebasing the models they have and it doesn't really seem to matter too much.

oh, yeah angels not angles
the thing i wish games workshop would do is definitively say whether or not they are going to use the larger bases or not, slowly phasing them in i dont think will help as i want to know whether to buy them or not

32mm bases were a decision made by the sculptor to keep the pieces looking balanced. As per usual all of the hand-wringing over base sizes in 40k amounted to nothing as the absolute rule is and has been for quite some time to use whatever came with the model when possible... and be reasonable if you can't do that. But this doesn't sit well with the min-maxing pedants that GW has never cared about. The rest of us just got on with our lives.

The expectation is that Human-sized models, like Guardsmen, Eldar, Tau FW, Ork Boyz [but not Nobz] little Nids, will remain on 25 mm bases, while the bulkier Space Marines will move up towards 32 mm bases. Right now, SM feet tend to overhang the edges of the 25 mm bases, so I expect the move to 32 mm was aesthetic, to make the models look more balanced.
So as new kits are released for SM sized models, they'll probably be issued 32 mm bases. The Deathstom Boxes came with 32 mm bases for the Death Company, and the BA Tacticals have 32 mm bases, to the best of my knowledge. I expect all MEQ will get them, moving forward.

ah,
the annoying thing is a actually like the 32mm bases but i don't think i would like half my army with 25mm bases and the other half with 32mm bases. i am torn between updating all my current models to 32 mm or carry on using my 25mm bases until such a time (if it comes) that all sm power armour kits come with 32mm ones supplied. I dont think i will ever re base my entire army (7500 points worth, about 4500 of them being on 25mm bases) but i may just use it for veterans, artificer armoured marines, captains and other more unique figures which usually come with 25mm bases.
at the moment i am making my own 'armour through the ages' set from mk1 to mk8 and i have decided to use the 32mm bases as i was going to use the 40mm bases but they just looked disproportionate but the 32 mm ones still allow a 'mini diorama' feel and actually look good for the figures. i wonder if it will be anything like when they moved termie bases up from 25 to 40mm bases where some people moved all of their termie's up to the new scale (like myself), some just kept their old ones on 25mm bases and put the new ones on the provided bases and some others (i only know one person who did this) kept on using the 25mm bases even though they had access too the new ones.

I've decided that I *really* like 32mm bases on space marines. I've begun converting all my jetpack guys, and I'm certain that any new models I do that are bulky will be 32mm. They just look infinitely more substantial than 25mm, not to mention, they don't tip over at the slightest bump.
In addition to the tacticals, Death Company now come with 32mm too.
I would be curious as to whether any "newly boxed" standard marines come with 32mm -- I'm not in the market for more vanilla tacticals or sternguard at the moment, but if anyone has one newly shipped from GW, I'd be interested to know (the problem with store stock is, a lot of it is old).

you could base the 25mm base and leave the ring black as a 'border' which i have seen on bases with rounded edges, i myself think i will just buy a stack of 32mm bases and start converting the new minis i buy

I would glue the adapter on first.
Then glue flock to match.
Then use a primer brush paint.
You could also attach flock first and spray, but it would not be seamless.

Ive put my crons (new and old) on new 32s, it just looks great now that their feet dont hang off the edge anymore.
I plan on starting imperial fists soon and will probably be using 32's as well but my gf is using 25's for her deldar and harlies so I suppose its just preference now.

I have nearly finished collecting the ultramarine second company and i think that for them i will stick to 25mm but for my veterans, captains and other 'non second company figures' i will start using the 32mm ones because they look so cool. i may one day buy tons of those adaptors and turn all of my second company to 32mm but that is just and idea. the reason i don;t base my few remaining squads of the second company on 32mm is that it will look inconsistent with two different sized bases when standing next to each other. does anyone know if there are 32mm bases on ebay or amazon for a good price? thanks

I bought a pack of 50 base adapter rings for ~23 USD on eBay, as I have half a Battle company to rebase myself. They are good quality and slide right and slightly snug onto the base (from underneath too).

Has anyone recieved the 32mm bases with Sanguinary Guard box? Cause I just bought a box of SG and also some CSM Raptors, and I'm looking at two bags of bases containing different sizes. Like an idiot I just dumped the two packages together so I don't know which came from where.
I seriously doubt the Raptors got the new toys over SGs...
