God of course. I mean, this is where the thread is inevitably going, right?
There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.
It's quite common to hear auditory hallucinations under pressure, throw in the gakky environment they were working in and it's not surprising. Even if only guy heard it, he starts calling back and saying to his mates "Hey did you hear that? Someone's calling for help, double time!" and then they're all gonna be "hearing it". Our brains really are amazing, all sorts of fun little psychological tricks.

Given that there was no one else there... yeah, it's the right answer, especially given that if anyone did swear they heard someone, kala has the right of it above.

1.) It pleases God to toss a vehicle into this river, killing the mother and putting the baby in mortal danger.
2.) God decides, you know what, I changed My mind. I'll alert these rescuers.
3.) That being done, God smiled in His benevolence, and then immediately resumed the deaths of 18 children under five every minute, all day long, 25,000 a day. A pint-sized 9/11, every 8 minutes, mostly dying of diarrhea and other easily-avoidable causes.
Seems legit to me.

The problem of suffering is certainly something that many Christians (and non-Christians) struggle with. I'd recommend checking out some of Greg Boyd's stuff. At the very least, he's put his time in to doing research, and he knows what he's talking about.

Well, obviously this kid is pretty awesome or whatever.
The Gnostic Christians actually have a solution to the whole "If there is a god he either gives 0 feths about humans or is a supremely malevolent entity". According to them, the creator is actually not the supreme being and the creator is in fact malevolent - or at least indifferent to suffering.
Related to what Ouze is getting in to.

If a poster with your background posts something like this and leaves it with a 'totally open-to-interpretation' "one of those mysteries that can really get a person wondering", then you have to understand why people would draw that conclusion from your post. And not express feigned shock at the occurrence.
I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

Whatever. In PA., I lived in a house out in the country for a few years where similar unexplained things happened all the time. People, both family members and visitors, would hear voices or see people that would be there one second, and the next, gone.
Is it possible to have someone cast true seeing on you? Because if it's ghosts, they might have a quest and earn you some much-needed XP.
All joking aside, I am utterly confident in KKM's explanation before. I firmly believe there was no divine intervention, but I also just as honestly believe that the rescuers really believed they heard a voice. The mind is a monkey.
Did you read that article that I posted a few months ago, about an experiment into determining why innocent people will sign false confessions for (hypothetical) crimes they didn't commit? All you need to do is suggest something enough and your mind fills in the blanks with all sorts of details and makes it real. It's just the way we work, no supernatural explanation required.

I think it's wrong to religiously profile posters on Dakka .

was there drugs? I found acid could create any number of hilarious happenings*, one of my friends found god by hugging trees, she still like trees.
*just keep any one on acid away from a balcony edge,, there seems to be an uncanny obsession with looking over the edge. People on acid don't think they can fly, they just think the view is so awesome they want to be there ( the number of times i've dragged people away from a balcony whilst they were on acid is immense - i've been there myself )

Sometimes when I am in the shower, I could swear I hear Yoda talking to me, telling me to eat another donut or something. I know now that the white noise of the water simply gave my brain a canvas for any auditory patterns it wanted to paint. Not gonna fool me again, Yoda.

One of the noises I constantly hear at work are the alarms on our IV pumps. It's a very distinct beeping noise (by design, so that you can identify what is alarming and what kind of alarm it is from down the hall). I swear that I hear that alarm going on at home a couple times a day.

No drugs. The people involved who saw or heard things at that house were all types from 2 year olds up to elderly, from friends and family, or people coming in to work on wiring and other things.

Call lights. IV pumps have nothing on those torture devices.
