I painted my cultist the same way for a reallynice unhealthy pale flesh look. Instead of the crimson....I guess you could try mixing nuln and some red layer until you got the approp. shade and then thin it down like crazy with retarder and water. Worth a shot

Try watering down Khorne red as much as you can. Nice and dark, I think Mephiston would be just too bright for your needs here.

I tried thinned Khorne before. Really didnt do the do. Could be as its a base or just the pigment. evil sunz with nuln to darken it seems to work better and then thinned down further to a wash consistency

sup dakka,
I have finally been able to put some time on the bench and got quite a bit of progress done. I managed to paint and base ten cultists and I couldnt be happier with the result. This post i would like to walk you guys through my progress with the cultists and hopefully get some feedback on how i can improve my painting and maybe help out a new warhammer player at the same time.
Since my last post I have been really pushing to get some work done with my models. Its been hard for me as I just had a little baby girl and my work is extremely busy right now. Putting all that a side I purchased a couple new paints (blood for the blood gods!) and now I think I am at the stage where I need to buy a couple nice brushes. The army pater ones Im using work but I feel like they might not only be hindering my ability to improve but also the flow of the paint from the brush just doesnt feel right. I keep reading that the Kolinski 7 series brushes are top notch but im wondering what you guys think?
I tried to step up the look of my basing on the cultists and I wanted to give them more of a abandoned/ apocalyptic city look. from my understanding cultists are regular humans trying to win the favour of the chaos gods. that being said I felt that a city base would fit the fluff and give them a nice little pop. I did a tonn of research looking for ideas and came across a youtuber named eons of battle. These guys are great for giving basic basing ideas and tutorials for new warhammer painters. I used this tutorial and added a couple of extra stuff such as curbes and sewer grates to give one base from another a unique look.
link for tutorial - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UuOgDWyWcaw
This is a pic of the bases before primer and paint.( you will see the final product in later pictures)
Once the bases were completed I started working on the cultists. I was not really sure what direction I was going so I did a test on two of the cultists with different looks and tests to see what i did and did not like. To simplify things I tried to paint one piece of the model white to keep my "bone Legion" theme and painted highlights of green and red for some contrast. For the flesh I went with rakarth flesh, washed with raikland flesh shade, highlight with rakarth flesh again and then an extreme highlight of paled witch flesh. For the bandages I used screaming skull, washed with nuln oil, highlighted with white then washed with aggrax earth shade to make the cloth seem a bit more worn and dirty. for the rest of the paint I used brown for leather, khorne red/warpstone green for contrast pieces and black/grey for cloaks/clothes. By far the hardest part of this unit was highlighting the cloth and heads (specifically bald heads). I also had hard time highlighting the muscle and bigger flesh areas. I think one of the main reasons i had a hard time with the flesh was due to over washing with raikland flesh shade. I think next time I will give it a lighter coat and see how it looks.
Here are some pics of the finished product.
So I have a few questions:
1) What is the best way to highlight cloaks/cloth, Drybrush or highlight?
2) Can anyone give me some pointers on highlighting flesh, more specifially heads/faces and muscle?
3) What type of brush should I go with for a upgrade?
4) Anything you guys think I need to improve if so how?
I love seeing my army coming together Its such a sense of achievement. I cant wait to finish a couple more units so I can finally field my first 500 point army.
Once again thanks for the read Dakka and have a great long weekend.
Cheers!

Thanks for the feedback. I tried what you told me and I just could not get the look I was looking for. I'm just going to wait till i get some proper wash and add it later.

Sup dakka,
So I'm having some trouble trying to choose what model to start working on next. Just got back from a week up at the cottage and I'm ready to crack out some more chaos. Should I paint another 10 cultists, a hell brute or a rhino? Let me know what you guys would like to see next.
Cheers!

Would love to see your take on a vehicle, personally. My vote goes to the Rhino, with runner up being a Hellbrute.
Looking forward to seeing the progress. Take it easy for now.

Sup Dakka,
So looking at the feedback I have decided to go with the rhino. I honestly was thinking either the Rhino or the Hell brute as well but you guys have convinced me. Any ways I started dry fitting the rhino together without glue and using blue tac to hold it into place to give myself a rough idea of what my take on a Chaos Rhino would look like. I am not the greatest converter/custom builder as I have never tried it before nor do I have the necessary tools to do it (green stuff, bits, modelling tools). Using the selection of bits that came in the rhino kit I decided to try and give my Rhino a different look than the "standard" looking rhino. I really tried to push out the chaos look to the next level.
So here is my rough idea of what I am aiming for. I have two different versions to show you because I’m not sure If maybe it might be a little too much. If anyone has any ideas or input on changing it up to make my idea POP that much more please don’t be shy.
version 1
Version 2 (the more sublet look)
as you can see I tried to give the front of a rhino a body shredder type mouth that will somewhat eat anything that gets in its path. Its a very basic idea at the moment and I would like to try and add body parts, skulls and gore to really give that nasty chaos look to it.
here is my questions for you guys:
1) so what do you guys think, version 1 or 2?
2) Is it to much and if so what do you guys think I need to change?
3) Any advice on how I can make from scratch "GORE" such as intestines or guts?
Once again Dakka thanks for the read, it’s always appreciated.
Cheers!

Hey red thirst,
thanks for reading and I’m glad you are looking forward to seeing my next "master piece" ahahaha. Hopefully I can get some time to work on this Rhino. Its one thing to start a project but for me its a whole different ballgame when it comes to finishing. Time is not on my side these days hopefully within the next month it will be.
Cheers!

Thanks for the reply, and I totally understand. Of the two versions, I like # 2 the most. The more subtle look, also maintains the basic footprint of the rhino & hull for gaming purposes as an added aside. Version #1 does have rule of cool going for it, but I like Ver. #2 for general visual appeal. Regarding the blood/gore effects, green stuff rolled into 'strands' and then painted greyish (dead flesh) with a pink hue, then splattered with some of the GW technical blood for the blood god paint might suit your needs? Tha'd be what I'd try to do anyway.
As for taking the time to paint, I'm right there with you man. I work 2 jobs at present, and it took me nearly a month just to find time to paint one miniature; my recently completed deathwatch librarian. Started work painting this guy on May 3rd. Finished painting him on May 27th. Here's the result:
May 3rd:
May 27th:
The trick is to stay steady at it, and make some progress as often as you can, even if only for 20 to 30 minutes to an hour a day. That's how I finally got this guy done, just taking baby steps with the painting till it was finally all assembled and painted.
Looking forward to seeing the progress forward in the mean time as you make it, just keep up the great work! Your minis are looking awesome, and I look forward to seeing the force you're building continue to grow!
Take it easy.

Hey red thirst,
That month of working on that single mini really paid off, he looks top notch. Great Job edge highlighting the black armour I always struggle with that. Also how did you get that amazing glow effect on the eyes? I need to pick up some green stuff to make some gore. Don't have any at the moment but hopefully my semi local store carries. Have any other tricks up your sleeve besides green stuff for guts? As for the rhino I'm still debating on what version to go with but Im also leaning towards version 2 as well. I think sometimes less is more but a couple more opinions with some reasoning might change my mind, I guess only time will tell.
Right now my motivation for painting is to get my 500 point army list Ready for the battlefield, I'm absolutely dieing to field my first army and show off my countless hours of hard work. I haven't even read the whole 40k rulebook I'm about half way there but hey, at the rate I'm painting it looks like I got lots of time to finish.
Any ways great job on that mini and thanks for taking the time to give me feedback.
Cheers!

Much obliged as well, and thank you for that. The glow effect was laying down progressively smaller areas of shades of green under and around the eyes, such that they look like they're casting light/glowing outward from the eye socket. I started with Caliban Green as the largest area of green, then warpstone glow in a smaller area underneath that (main color used was this), then warboss green closest to the eyes and around the interior of the eye socket itself, and then finally I painted the eyes themselves bright white. The effect is pretty nice as you can see. Obviously you'll want to try the effect out on an old mini and ensure your colors blend well and look ok, depending on what color glow you're looking for. Also, be sure you've finished painting the head completely before you add any lighting effects as well.
Any kind of 2 part epoxy putty or modeling putty (What green stuff is, essentially) should work just fine for you, in lieu of green stuff, and it's sold at most major hobby/craft stores here in the U.S. (Michaels, Hobby Lobby, etc.) So you could call any that are local to you and see if they carry or stock it. May save you some time. Use the back of a hobby knife (or proper sculpting tool if you have one, an old dental cleaning pick works VERY well for this in my experience) keep a touch of water near by to help keep the GS from sticking to your blade (Light coats of water on the back of the knife back / tip or the tip of the sculpting tool I find help keep the Greenstuff from sticking to it quite so much. Just very small amounts of water, spread them over the blade with a fingertip generally works well.) and after you roll out the 'tube' that will become the intestine, add some texture to it, then place them where you want, draped over the spikes or around the floor of the rhino interior, etc. Then let them cure.
As for the rhino, as I said, I'm a big proponent of keeping a vehicle's 'footprint' on a tabletop in tact as much as I can. I don't like adding things to my vehicles to make them larger/longer/wider if I can help it. Not to say rule of cool shouldn't be brought in to play, but that's how I look at it.
Stay motivated. Painting 'just' 500 points at a time helps keep the number of models manageable and is also awesome to be able to 'double up' your army once you finish off the next 500 points and add it to your force.
Keep painting, even if it's only a few minutes a day! Slow and steady wins the race, and when you do get your first game in, be sure to snap some pictures! You've got one of the most interesting chaos forces I've seen in a while and I look forward to seeing it grow as time goes on.
Take it easy for now.

Hey,
it's funny you mention this because Im actually not very impressed with it and currently looking into buying something else ( gel maybe). It's hard to control the amount used and yes it takes forever to dry. So here is my next question what is a better alternative that don't cost me a Arm and a leg?
P.s. What version of the rhino do you like more?
Thanks for the read.

Sup dakka,
As much as I would like to finish building and painting my recent rhino project, I have been somewhat put at a dead end as my local store does not have green stuff in stock and my online order will not be here for at least 15 days. As much as this sucks, something else has now caught my attention and will be in the works until I receive the green stuff.
My HQ KHARN has finally arrived and he's the last piece to complete my first 500 point army.
I don't know what took so long but apparently games workshop was on back order for like the last past month on this specific model. Any ways it ended up being perfect timing because I now have a new project to work on and keep my mind occupied until the green stuff arrives. I'm totally pumped to start working on this guy and He is by far my most favourite hq regardless how good or bad he plays on the table.
I have also been trying to figure out what I am going to do with my chaos marines that came with the DV set I got and I came across a great idea online. I'm going to be converting them into plague marines in the next few months and use the chosen champion to convert into a sorcerer lord. so look forward to seeing them in the near future because I know I will be.
I also have 2 aspiring champions and they are just way to nice of models to be used a simple csm champion. I didn't pay 24 bones for them but for that price I feel like they have so much potential as a a independent character. Problem is I don't really know what to do with them, any ideas dakka?
So as of right now I got 3 awesome projects in the works so keep posted for some new updates.
Thanks for the read dakka as always and I hope you guys can come up with some good ideas for the aspiring champions.
Cheers!

As for the aspiring champs, what are they armed with? I'd say putting them on the field as Possessed might be cool? Not sure about that since I've heard possessed aren't that great rules wise.
Are you going to have your nurgle guys painted up in Bone Legion colors? Having a warband with a few Chaos factions represented sounds cool. Looking forward to seeing your take on Nurgle!

About magnetizing tiny joints such as weapon option for infantry models: use snug long pins instead, add a tiny piece of tack glue if it's loose.
About highlighting flesh tones: black guys= prime black, dark flesh/terracotta, black wash; white dudes= prime whatever, tallarn flesh, bronze flesh, highlight elf flesh, ogryns wash; mix in tanned flesh or dwarf flesh for variation, that way it will look right in a group rather than clones.

Hey red thirst,
Still not sure exactly how I'm going to be painting my plague marines. Obviously I would like to keep my bone legion theme but at the same time I would like them to still look like plague marines. Im defenetly going to keep the heads of the plagues white but but dirty old weathered white. Not sure what I'm doing with the body yet, I guess only time will tell.

I really am liking your work thus far, Redflex. I'm not sure I would paint the trim on him helmet gold as that would be quite a bit of gold (unless you just did it on the front), but i do think you need another color there for contrast. What about painting the inner part of his (ears?) black? Or maybe even green? Or black with the interior edges green to match his axe?

Hey thanks for your kind words and I think your right about adding a contrasting colour to to the helmet it just seems so plain. I need to add that pop factor. mind you the photo doesn't really justify the helmets look as the recesses are much darker in person.

Personally I do like the helm, although I would maybe make it more boney, like you've done with the skulls on him. However I can understand that in the photos the white might be showing brighter than it truly is.
I wouldn't add gold either, think it would detract, as the gold wouldn't stand out against the white very well.

Khorne needs true blood! and that is an absolutely fantastic effect, just make sure you get UHU glue.

Sup Dakka,
Finished kharns backpack laat night and now I just need to get him based, I'm still not to sure what I want to do for the base yet. I was thinking of buying skull bases casted in resin or maybe buying a bulk amount of Skulls and create my own base. Wondering if any one knows of any Canadian based online stores where I can find something like this that will suit my needs.
I also pInted the eyes and I think it really completed the head.
while working on the backpack I did something a little different that worked, funny thing was I kind of did it by accident. I left all the paints I had initially used to paint kharn in my wet pallet for a couple days and when I came back to paint the backpack I decided I would try and use them. The paints were really watered down I guess from the humidity or osmosis caused the paints left in the wet pallet to absorb much more water then I had initially added. To my surprise it made the the blending and the edge highlight more specifically look much much better. So I learned something new last night that I think will make me much better at blending and hilighting. Any ways I think I really nailed the edge highlighting on the backpack this time and I now understand that trying to edge highlight with paint to thick just doesn't give me the look I was trying to achieve.
So I still have not received the green stuff and I'm now moving on to the hellbrute until I get either the green stuff or the base for kharn. Tomorrow is a holiday for us Canadians and hopefully it's a nice day with sunshine so I can prime my hellbrute and get painting.
Happy holidays Dakka and thanks for the read.
Cheers!

Hey solar,
Yea man that effect is pretty freaking cool, I really like it . I'm Going to see if I can get my hands on those products as I have never heard of that Hutu glue. Looks like a little bit of work but definitely worth it, Thanks.
Cheers!
