Nice work on the engine bay, the v6 looks great, are you sure you didn't use any reference pics!?

Have you come up with any solutions for wheels yet? Will those be scratch built too, or did you manage to loot some from the flgs bits box?

Orks are coming along nicely. I like the color scheme.

If I could suggest one thing: the yellow and red paint on their weapons looks a little thick. Maybe consider thinning your paints and applying 2-3 coats? Just a thought. Other than that, keep going. Thanks for sharing!

Hey everybody, thank you for all of your wonderful compliments!

First thing's first: I've heard several comments on maybe needing to thin paints (more on this later), particularly the red and yellow, so I grabbed a cheap cutting board to serve as a palette/thing on which I can cut minis from sprues without fething up the table:

I made a little progress on my main Ork Boyz and Nobz by priming them black, but I really didn't think about taking a picture of that or anything.

What I did photograph was some real progress made on my Grotz and Runtherd, the latter of which I ended up finishing. I notice that I start focusing most of my attention on a single model, even when I'm trying to do multiple guys in batches.
WIP:

Da Runtherd (and I swear the squig looks better IRL):

Sorry for the blurriness in the last photo. I dub thee "Fluffy" in honor of the squig that got murdered by foul Kroot in the Avatars in a Room thread.
I'm fairly pleased with the way the metal and rust, the fur, and Runtherd's skin turned out; conversely, the "black ink" that did wonders for the fur just didn't help define the squig whatsoever. At least I figured out how to make my own jury-rigged inks when I tried to water down some of my paints, as per people's suggestions, but I discovered that my paints are already very, very watery. I just need the patience to apply multiple coats of the brighter colors. Meanwhile, I'm still honestly a learner when it comes to washes and drybrushing, so I hope to continue to improve in those areas.

Thanks again for all of the feedback that has really made this P&M blog worth updating regularly. As always, I look forward to your feedback and to making more progress on these Orks. Stay tuned!

So, as the Avatars in a Room people may have noticed, I have returned from an awfully long hiatus from the hobby. I might go into some detail if anybody even cares to know . Point is, my schedule is fairly regular now, so I am slowly easing myself back into things.

Let's start with a nice, simple update. A Boy and the first Nob.

I think I'm doing a little better with the bright red and yellow by applying several coats to counteract the black primer, and I feel I'm getting a better sense of to what extent to apply rust. I have several more Orks and Grots halfway done as well. As for the Trukk (which I'm sure is why so many of you liked this thread), don't worry. I've gathered some more materials, and will be providing more WIP pics likely sometime this weekend. There are only about 3 or 4 Orks, a pair of grots, and the Deffkoptas that are devoid of paint. I will likely hold off on the Koptas till I acquire black spray paint, as hand priming those might be a nightmare. I better start looking for more rescues soon, there really isn't much left!

That's it for the moment, but more is absolutely on the way. Stay tuned!

Back again, and this time, we've got a Trukk update! (Trukkdate?)

After spending a bit of time pondering, I drew a bit of inspiration from real pickup trucks that look like this:

Yep, a wooden Trukk bed. Fortunately, there were some popsicle sticks from my sister's mini Trojan Horse for her Iliad project (well executed, yes, but perhaps not the most relevant choice if you've read it). I digress; I grabbed some popsicle sticks, cut off the rounded ends, then began shaping them into appropriate plank-sized pieces.

I figured out that this is going to make for a rather skinny Trukk, so I went online to find the approximate dimensions for the Trukk's official model (about 5 1/2 X 3 X 3", fyi) and compared these specs to my build. My width was still less than 2 inches. So I added on a couple more sticks to widen the trukk bed.

About 2 1/2" inches wide, much better than 1 3/4" or so. Not only does this make enough room to comfortably fit 5 Boyz or so to represent passengers...

...But I also will get a bit of additional width from the fence-like siding, as well as my freshly scavenged...

...Wheels!

Satisified with the passenger compartment at this point, I glued the siding to the floor of the trukk bed, and as that sat, I tried to imagine what the trukk cab and undercarriage would look like.

...It's not quite finished yet.

That's about it for the Trukk today, but I'm sure I'll be busting the plasticard back out for more work on the remainder of my first Orky vehicle. Meanwhile, I also painted up a few more Boyz.

In hindsight, I think I may have fethed up the eyes just a wee bit.

First Big Shoota, and he looks ready ta plug someone full of lead!
...Once his eyes dilate, that is. He must've had a hit from the Emperor's own crackpipe.

I think that's a pretty good status update for today. Once I've found inspiration for the other regions of the Trukk, I'll be getting on that straight away. The number of unpainted minis I have is dwindling as well (about 12 Ork models, probably 30 if you include some Guardsmen). I hope you're enjoying the work I've put into these Orks; I know I am. Stay tuned!

Hey guys, time for a very brief update, as my time's quite limited.

I started work on one of the minis I thought I was going to put off till the end, but I guess I proved myself wrong: it's a Deffkopta! These pictures are still WIP, but aside from the rotor, finishing touches on the base, and one or two more details on the main chassis, I'm quite near completion. Take a look.

That's all I've got time for today. I really hope you guys look the dirty, oily look that I tried to apply to my mini. I just realized I also need to put little silver paint chips on all the red and yellow areas, too. Not quite done, as it were. All feedback is welcomed and appreciated. More is coming soon, guys, so stay tuned!

Edit: Trust me, I tried to address the mold lines and the halves of the chassis not lining up perfectly. It's not going to really get any better, unfortunately.

Hello everyone!

I'm posting another quick update on how things are at this moment. Like the title suggests, I am very nearly finished with my Deffkopta now. Here's what I've now completed since last time:
- Painted up a couple "blank" spots on the kopta's chassis
- Painted most of the rotor
- Heavy weathering, including chipping/fading paint, rusting, and further oily/greasy appearance

What I have to do to finish this mini is as follows:
- Paint the final rotor blade (appearing to have been looted from a SM vehicle)
- Add extra bits/details and static grass on the base
- Fashion a jury-rigged flying stand from clear sprue

Here is how the Deffkopta appear now. I've probably put in at least 8 hours on this single mini

And finally, I have a group shot of my Ork force as it currently stands.

Compared to how they started, I think it's a nice little improvement.

That's all I've got for today. My next post should unveil a newly completed Deffkopta, and I hope to document some more progress on the Trukk as well. I hope all the work I've poured into this single albeit large model is paying off in the eyes of others. As always, constructive C&C is welcomed and appreciated. More is on the way folks, so stay tuned!

Thank you everybody for the feedback! More updates are to come, but the going has been slow. You can't force yourself to sit and paint if you aren't feeling particularly inspired; sometimes these mini slumps just happen.

Here's my method for bases: I start with fairly coarse sand from any craft store, I think I Used Hobby Lobby. I prime black, then apply a generous layer of Scorched Brown to the sand and paint the rim. Next is a drybrush of Khemri Brown, followed by a very light drybrush of Elf Flesh. I top with Citadel static grass (one tub goes a looooong way), usually two patches toward the front and rear of the base.

Old Citadel colors, by the way

I have come back. I'm finally back.

There has been quite some time where I was not particularly involved in the hobby, for various reasons. Among other things, continuing (and sometimes struggling with) my university academics, periods of poor physical and/or mental health, and relationship BS I should never have put myself through have really kept me from having the time or drive to invest time into working with my models. However, some of these circumstances have changed or improved, so while I certainly still need to prioritize academics, I am in a much better place to let the creative juices flow.

So, where am I now, in terms of miniature games?

Around the time of the new year, I put aside some time to drop by my FLGS, and I was able to get a game or two of 40k in, the first games I had played in at least a year, save a single game in October. I also heard from the store owners that they were just about to start up a Kill Team league. 200 point games are a lot less hassle than 1500-2000 point games, and as an IG player, I was aware my codex's strength, so I went ahead and signed up. My list is built around heavily kitted out veterans in a Chimera, and so far I have 3 wins and 1 loss . I'll be happy to recount those KT games a little later, but more importantly, I made a purchase... More secondhand Orks!!! For a heck of a bargain, I acquired more Black Reach Orks, including over a dozen Boyz, another Nob or two, a new Deffkopta, and finally a (complete) Warboss! Most are in better shape than the first batch in my first post, but one or two do have less than satisfactory paint jobs that I'll redo. Despite having a short queue of models at home that still aren't quite done, this purchase was a big step forward because it helped me get excited about painting again, and with more free time than I previously had, I can actually get a little momentum going.

Things are moving in a good direction; let's find out where they'll take us.

Spoiler:

P.S. Sorry for no pics. I'll try to upload some tomorrow morning.

P.P.S. Is there any interest in occasional quick KT battle reports? Painting minis and playing games are equally important parts of the hobby IMO, and my IG are begging for attention

P.P.P.S. Yeah, I'll get back to my Trukk scratchbuild too, but I'll need to make some repairs after it apparently suffered a bit of damage during transportation at some point.

P.P.P.P.S. Nuln Oil is literally the best thing for painting. I got some and washed a couple of my IG tanks, and it makes me feel so much better about how they look.

Alright, let's get some pictures posted!

Here's the stuff that I scrounged up at my FLGS yesterday...
5 Boyz and a Nob, where one clearly needs a repaint, though he's definitely better off than the original batch...

A whopping 12 more full Boyz on partial sprues. These were the real bargain!

A deffkopta including the rotor?!? That's a first

And A WARBOSS! This is actually a big deal! The first 1/2 of a Warboss I got appeared irreparable and went missing anyways

Yes, this purchase was what drove me to finally start painting up my minis again. Speaking of which, the new Warboss made my lightning klaw Nob feel very insecure about the size of his CCW, so I had to give him a little bit of an upgrade, fashioned from plasticard.

I also discussed at the FLGS how the first two Koptas I had did not come with clear flying bases, and that I was trying to make something work with 60mm textured bases. So to sweeten the deal, they gave me some (3) flight sticks for free!

I then drilled a hole in the base for the first Deffkopta using a bit just the right size to fit inside one of those cylindrical bits on the underside...

And then glued the stick in after removing the loose debris. The first Deffkopta is now officially ready for action!

And since I haven't shown it off yet, that last rotor that was previously unpainted was finished as well. Unfortunately the glare seems to drown out the hue, but it should still be evident that some lootin' was involved

I started working on my model backlog, painting the skin for a couple Boyz and Nobz that had been primed and awaiting paint...
Wait, what the ?

A post-Christmas impulse buy saw me in possession of a 5 Termagant box to test color schemes. The red/yellow was done just for fun, but in the day or two before I bought the bugs, the green/grey color scheme was stuck in my head and begging to happen, so I caved. I was even considering buying more Nids, until yesterday's Ork purchase had me confidently deciding on what my second army will be.

That looks like that'll be all for a short little bit, as it appears my fine detail brush was "borrowed" by my younger sister, who returned it with significantly fewer bristles..... You'd think a high school senior would be more careful, and less of a kleptomaniac. I may be on standby for a day or two, but that certainly will not slow down the momentum I built up this weekend! Stay tuned to see how much further this project will go!

Hey guys, I got some replacement brushes, and as a matter of fact I've found these brushes to be of notable quality, so I've been painting away with them today and yesterday... very slowly. Who knows how long it'll take to field a fully painted Ork horde...

Let's start it off with a couple newly painted Grots!

Unlike the Fearsum Five (regrettably), these guys are complete with eyes!

Another big shoota Boy ready to go

So many looted gubbinz! An autocannon ammo drum from the Hydra/Wyvern kit + pouches off of a Bullgryn sprue make the backpack, and, of course, the beakies may have... misplaced another pauldron.

And finally, some WIP Nobz

Group shot

So, as the title of this post suggests, I was mulling over Warboss names when I finally came up with one I particularly liked. I did a little pre-painting on my Warboss to solidify the idea.

Oi! Ya got some 'oney musterd on yer chin, bos-- *KRUMP*

No, stupid git, this is Boss Goldtoof! And his WAAAAGH! loves lootin' as much as they love a good scrap! I really feel that developing the fluff of my clan as I go along really helps add character that paint alone can't quite do alone. I think a loot-happy clan that values every scrap of metal it can scrounge is very befitting of Orks whose models came from such meager beginnings, with lots of parts "borrowed" from my old sprues and my FLGS's bit box. Seeing life brought to these models is a reward all its own.

Once I finish my WIP Nobz, I am prioritizing my efforts on my klaw Nob, Deffkopta for this month's painting challenge, then hope to start working on da Boss himself. I'll also make sure to get some photos of my IG Kill Team in action this weekend, as they vie for the best 200 point list on the block! A whole lot is in the works and coming up, so stay tuned and witness the rise of WAAAAGH! Goldtoof!
