I am making a tyranid hive fleet and am going for a swarm instead of big nids but i am having trouble thinking of a name for my tyranids. I dont want to use the name of a hive fleet that is already in existence but when ever i try to come up with a name it just doesnt sound right. so i was looking for some suggestions or some ideas about where to find inspiration for one.

As they are usually named after mythical monsters I just looked up lists of them until I found one I liked the sound of and had a cool story.

Hive fleet Hydra would be cool. Or Chimera. Maybe Manticore.

Shadowrun is the best game ever. It's the only thing I have ever played in which I have jumped out of a shot out van with a chainsaw to cut a flying drone in half before leveling a building with ANFO assisted by a troll, a dwarf, an elf, and a wizard.

I eventually settled on Apshai. The Egyptian god of evil insects and eater of the dead.

When I was looking for names I ran into some world eating serpents. I think one from Hindu faith has 1000 heads. Look for that kind of stuff. World enders. Dead eaters. Many headed beasts.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

There's no golden rule for Hive Fleet names. Mythological monsters seem to be the running trend, but gods, demons and fictional creatures are also accepted. The only requisite seems to be sounding cool and menacing enough.

My picks: Chernobog (Slavic "bad god"), Gargantua (fictional giant), Brobdingnag (Johnathan Swift's land of the giants), Tartarus (Greek god of the abyss), Lamashtu (Mesopotamian she-devil), Rahab (Hebrew sea monster)...

It's just a matter of digging deep into some mythology database until you find something cool

What about Hive Fleet Tithonus? Greek God of cicadas haha if you live on the east coast of the US you know how annoying and numerous they are when they surface.

I've always liked the Lovecraft Mythos, for example

Hive Fleet Cyäegha

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

I'm disappointed in GW for not using 'hekatonkheir' for anything. The hekatonkheires had a hundred hands and fifty heads and were mightier than the titans.

If you're going for swarms over big monsters maybe Hive Fleet Locust?

Maybe hive fleet Shub-niggurath would work with her/it having 1000 young. The name does not sound PC, unfortunately.

Go for a Hive Fleet named after a Wyvern of Monster Hunter. That gives you a lot of choice and cool names for fearsome monsters. (and good idea for painting scheme if you don't have one)

My hive fleet name is Psythe (as in Psychic sythe) I think combining a few words into new intresting sounding ones might work for you.

I just was brainstorming words to combine but I just thought of a great word that incorperates Terror with a swarm.

Hive Fleet Eclipse (as in so numerous they eclipse the sun)

Think of some descriptive words for your playstyle or backstory of your fleet and then plug them into Google Translate and play around with the language. You'll be surprised at what cool words come out!

That is pretty much what I did for Hive Fleet Verloren

Get your models on the table and looking good!

I decided to name my hive fleet "Hive Fleet Beholder". Being an old D&D player I've always liked the monster and the lore behind it.

Well.... that seems to be the trend....
But: a rose by any other name..... would still lose just as hard.

Are the existing Hive Fleets named after the star system where they were first encountered?

Flip through a D&D gods source book. If you want them to start near an Eldar World, use names like Corellon or Larethian.

For Orks, Gruumsh or Shargaas sound nice.

For Tau, try Gnomish Deities like Flandal or Nebelun.

Have fun!
