First I have to apologize about all the questions, I have been away from miniatures for so long that this is basically all new to me again, with that being said, if were interested in painting an Ork for this challenge and Veteran wins, what models would qualify for an entry?
An
ork that's a veteran of some battle.

Well, it wasn't what I was hoping to do - I'll do my flames at another time - but I have got more than a little excited about these veterans.

I've just this minute bought a few parts off eBay to make three members of a squad that I was going to make at some point anyway.

Ironically, I think they are going to be way better than I would have done before thanks to me having to rack my brains to work out how to make someone look like a veteran - thanks Paradigm!!!!

See my post a few up from here. The poll ended earlier today, with Veteran winning.

@Matthew: Yep, so long as it fits the theme, any mini from any game/range/company is cool. The more variety, the better!

There will be a thread started when the challenge goes live, in which you should post your Proof and final pics, and show off any WIPs if you want. There's no need to wait until the end of the month for final pics if you finish early, either, just post them whenever you're done.

I'll keep everything neat in the OP, and the thread becomes a place for discussion/questions/encouragement/feedback. See the current thread for an idea of how the whole thing works.

My soldiers are the kind that keep themselves presentable no matter the cost.

I have to try think outside the box for the veteran look.

So far I have:

Beard
Monocle
Medallion on helmet
Some trophies

And well thats all I can think of. Im not a huge fan of unkempt soldiers.

I'm going the Harlequin route myself and painting up a shadowseer. If I get it done at a decent clip, I may add the deathjester as well.

Forgive me now! Tomorrow I may no longer feel guilty...

I'm debating whether I will do my deathwing knights for this one. It won't be the whole unit since I already did the knight master (although he didn't turn out that great and I should redo him really). They are definitely veterans in the Dark Angels chapter and so should fit the theme.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

Going to go with Vrosh Tattersoul. Veteran Space Marine turned Veteran Looney Tune (seriously, who gives these guys axes?).

About my only decent option as I don't know if I will get anything better out here in Cyprus on short notice, and postage from the UK can be hit and miss.

All I need now is a colour scheme....

Here are my candidates, from left to right: Odin Goldsmith from Anima Tactics and his Sweard/spord (half sword and half spear or half spear and half sword), Ugluk with his lucky ork head or a Samurai with a Dai Katana from Kensei by Zenit Miniatures.

Or I could try to write some terrible crossover fanfic and fit all three in the same place.

Having painted one, I can tell you Ugluk is a nice mini to paint, plenty of textures to work with. I'd almost be tempted to go with the larger mini so you can really show off!

Indeed it is. I am tempted to move away from the Red/Gold colour scheme though. Make him look a little darker, though that doesn't fit with all of his fluff.

Damn my respect for the lore!

He’s been fighting the imperials longer them most chapters have been around, I think that counts.

From most of these “does it fit” questions, apply the rule of cool. Can you spin it in a way that makes some vague connection and sounds awesome? Then you are OK. The whole point of these contests is to encourage creativity, and get people painting. And we want to be as inclusive as possible. Worst case scenario, when it comes time to vote, someone might go “I don’t get it” and picks someone else. It’s not like there are entry fees and cash prizes on the line. Just internet bragging points. And a sense of participation and community, an excuse to push your boundaries, and see what everyone else can do.

Couldn't have said it better myself! I approach this like I approach 40k: If the rules get in the way of having fun, stuff 'em! As Nev says, Rule of Cool always wins, so if you want to enter an IG conscript and can convince me that in IG terms, getting through basic training makes you a Veteran then go for it!

Basically, unless it's totally unrelated to the theme (say someone wanted to enter a Dragon in the Space Marine challenge without a VERY good reason ), I'm not going to say no!

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass.
